Web traffic tanked, not Penguin nor Panda...I am stumped...
-
I have had my current website for several years now, and traffic has been slowly building.
2010 = 49 hits a day, 2011 = 71 hits a day, 2012 = 157 hits a day.
I target local traffic and local keywords around by business.
I have kept up with SEO changes, using Facebook, social media, updated tags, and kept content fresh, added more galleries images, Auth tags & markup. I have 301 older sites that I have run in the past.
Then early this spring everything dropped, slowly but surely, now I'm at 90 hits a day
SERPS for my main phrase "boudoir photography" us at less than 50 according to MOZ.
I have been watching the new Algo updates, and never had any issues because I don't spam article marketing, I don't buy links, I try to keep content fresh, I don't use directories...I designed the site for PEOPLE not SEO.
I get major press about once to twice a year, newspapers still don't get links though.. grrrrr
I get natural links through gallery shows, events, local blogs, art shows...
So I thought it might be over the year I have slowly added too many less than 100 word pages?
Media, Bio, Art I combined all into one page. One page with 300+ words VS 3 pages of 100 words.
I did a 301 several pages and trimmed my menu down from 11 to 8 to help everything look cleaner and more eye pleasing...I started asking my friends/clients/collaborators for more links with no link text so they are natural...& not just "boudoir photography"
Traffic is still dropping...
What have I missed?

This is am amazing detailed answer.
I went through and removed links to the inisignicfia blog entirely.
I found some forums I had a signature and removed the sig those on three forums.
I took down my entire tumblr.
I did a disavow on several domains & subdomanins that "collect" links.
Total of over 500 individual links have been removed via webmaster, signature removal, & disavowal tool.
I changed/removed anchor text/links on a few other older blogs/forums.
Get listed has me as two business, I'll update those so they all match.
Citation finder looks amazing I'll dig deeper after lunch.
I just added/fixed:
Nokia, teleatlas, navteq information
I will work on more reviews, (reviews for my clients are a bit tricky due to the nature of my business, but I can get some from my more public clients.)
Here is the rel canonical, Is it set up wrong?
http://www.bayareaboudoir.com/capture.jpg
I fixed the home page anchor text, I'll work on a "logo"
I'm not extra concerned about Oakland specific traffic, as my clients come to me from 25 - 200 miles away. I do like the SF page idea...
I'll revamp my meta descriptions.
- your site loads at non-www (bayareaboudoir.com) - this should redirect to www version.
- not a huge issue, but /index.html should redirect to the main homepage.
I'm a little stumped on exactly how to code these?
Thanks again

I completely agree with Dan's advice - he just gave you like a grand of free research and advice. Age doesn't matter - you need to clean up bad links from the past.

Hi There
I'll just go through some of the biggest things I see in a few areas of the site;
Off Site / Backlinks
- anchor text - you've got too much commercial anchor and not enough branded or non-commercial. see the open site explorer report here. Any anchors that you have control over I would change them to your brand name or domain name. I'm referring to the anchors that say "oakland boudoir photography" etc
- disavowing - as others have recommended, if you do have old back links that are of low quality, it won't hurt to disavow them. what you really should do though is use webmaster tools list of back links. I find the Open Site Explorer backlinks to be great for a lot of things, but when it comes to finding and disavowing all of your damaging old links, you really have to go with Google's list. There's going to be a lot more in there.
Local SEO
- check ExpressUpdateUSA - ExpressUpdateUSA is a data provider to dozens of listing services. If your info is not correct with them, that's why you may wrong addresses pop back up again. Make sure all your info is correct with them.
- use GetListed.org and Whitespark Local Citation Finder or Citation Builder. These services are going to help you find, claim and optimize more local listings than you could ever dream of. Is this the highest quality thing to be doing? Not always, especially as you get past the big ones (Google+, Yelp etc) but can't hurt.
- claim GPS listings. add your business to Nokia Maps , NAVTEQ, tele atlas
- I agree, reviews are huge. This search has a bunch of great articles for ideas in how to get them.
On Site SEO
- link to your homepage with your brand name as anchor text. right now, your name is the anchor text for all links back to homepage. put the homepage link on your brand name and possibly logo for good UX
- if you're especially trying to rank for local queries, you need your city in the title tag(s). Don't stuff all kinds of cities in there. Just put "Oakland, CA". Unfortunately since you're not located in SF, it's not going to help much to put SF in the title tag to rank for SF
- If you want to rank for SF, I would suggest having a specific page with content about San Francisco. Testimonials of clients there, case studies of work there etc etc. I would also suggest getting people from San Fran to write reviews for you on Yelp, Google etc etc
- your site loads at non-www (bayareaboudoir.com) - this should redirect to www version.
- not a huge issue, but /index.html should redirect to the main homepage.
- In general, meta descriptions could be a little longer (not over 156). Make them like natural sentences, rather than lists of keywords.

That is a friends old blog.
5-10 years ago everyone had a blog and everyone was linking to each other in blogrolls & lists. Time goes on and many of the older blogs have gone defunct, or just sit and are no longer updated. Now everyone is on Tumblr. I miss the old Livejournal days. I know that Google has made changes to the weight of blogs, since so many people have started blogs JUST to rank. You can now even BUY blogs and links for pay and the whole article spamming issue.
I was wondering if the older blogs & older defunct websites is part of what is dropping rankings since the "link juice" is now stale and no longer current. It just seems to be a bit too rapid for this to be the main cause, also most of the recent algo updates would have tanked me sooner?
So you're suggesting I ask to have some of the older links removed from defunct blogs/websites if I have contact with the webmaster or do disavow if I am no longer in contact? How old is too old?
3 years, 5 years, 10 years?
I am currently working on NEW FRESH relevant natural local links through other local businesses, current blogs, news outlets and the like. I have gotten some great press recently.
(boudoir site)
(to my portrait site)

I was easily able to find spam links (http://www.insignifica.org/linksblog/2010_04.shtml), so I suggest you review all your backlinks and disavow and try to remove them.
-
I have tried to fix the wrong google maps/places address for 3 years now, they validate by sending a postcard to a defunct address...
When I get the Google Phone call I go over with them and they say they have the correct Oakland address...
My Auth and schema markup has the Oakland address on my websites as well.
I can not get rid of the old listing?
This listing is over 3 years old why would it tank my ranking this spring 2013?
-
It's definitely possible, I would consolidate your efforts in one Google Places account and encourage people you know to promote you there.
-
I have some Yelp reviews:
http://www.yelp.com/biz/carle-photography-oakland-2
I have a google + page:
https://plus.google.com/u/0/103255579254885041970/about
I JUST found an OLD google plus page:
https://plus.google.com/113751542266047416565/photos?hl=en
& if you search for my name all sorts of other of my photography comes up with a 3 YEAR old address (I have been trying to fix for years)
Could having TWO sites be causing the issues?
-
I don't see a presence for your site on Google+, which might explain the drop in traffic.
David Mihm did a great Whiteboard Friday about "How Business Listings Are Made": http://moz.com/blog/how-business-listings-made-whiteboard-friday. I would run a search for your target keyword in your location and see if your business is listed. If not, consider creating a Google Places account for your business, and encourage friends, family, and customers to promote you and give you positive reviews there.
-
Have you looked into local reviews? David Mihm presented in Boise last week about local search. Local reviews on Yelp, Yellow Pages... (I can't remember the others) but directory reviews are starting to carry weight with local search. It does seem like a bit of a pain, but you can ask customers to write a review for you on "x" place...(Sorry, we don't do a lot of local search... so remembering exactly what directory/ review places have slipped my mind.) Also, have you connected your geolocation with Google Maps?... this is also testing to carry weight.
I'd recommend to look into what Mihm has said about local search. This would definitely be applicable to your issue.

Lots of Listing Pages with Thin Content on Real Estate Web Site-Best to Set them to No-Index?
Greetings Moz Community: As a commercial real estate broker in Manhattan I run a web site with over 600 pages. Basically the pages are organized in the following categories: 1. Neighborhoods (Example:http://www.nyc-officespace-leader.com/neighborhoods/midtown-manhattan) 25 PAGES Low bounce rate 2. Types of Space (Example:http://www.nyc-officespace-leader.com/commercial-space/loft-space)
Web Design | | Kingalan1
15 PAGES Low bounce rate. 3. Blog (Example:http://www.nyc-officespace-leader.com/blog/how-long-does-leasing-process-take
30 PAGES Medium/high bounce rate 4. Services (Example:http://www.nyc-officespace-leader.com/brokerage-services/relocate-to-new-office-space) High bounce rate
3 PAGES 5. About Us (Example:http://www.nyc-officespace-leader.com/about-us/what-we-do
4 PAGES High bounce rate 6. Listings (Example:http://www.nyc-officespace-leader.com/listings/305-fifth-avenue-office-suite-1340sf)
300 PAGES High bounce rate (65%), thin content 7. Buildings (Example:http://www.nyc-officespace-leader.com/928-broadway
300 PAGES Very high bounce rate (exceeding 75%) Most of the listing pages do not have more than 100 words. My SEO firm is advising me to set them "No-Index, Follow". They believe the thin content could be hurting me. Is this an acceptable strategy? I am concerned that when Google detects 300 pages set to "No-Follow" they could interpret this as the site seeking to hide something and penalize us. Also, the building pages have a low click thru rate. Would it make sense to set them to "No-Follow" as well? Basically, would it increase authority in Google's eyes if we set pages that have thin content and/or low click thru rates to "No-Follow"? Any harm in doing this for about half the pages on the site? I might add that while I don't suffer from any manual penalty volume has gone down substantially in the last month. We upgraded the site in early June and somehow 175 pages were submitted to Google that should not have been indexed. A removal request has been made for those pages. Prior to that we were hit by Panda in April 2012 with search volume dropping from about 7,000 per month to 3,000 per month. Volume had increased back to 4,500 by April this year only to start tanking again. It was down to 3,600 in June. About 30 toxic links were removed in late April and a disavow file was submitted with Google in late April for removal of links from 80 toxic domains. Thanks in advance for your responses!! Alan0 -
Writing A Data Extraction To Web Page Program
In my area, there are few different law enforcement agencies that post real time data on car accidents. One is http://www.flhsmv.gov/fhp/traffic/crs_h501.htm. They post the accidents by county, and then in the location heading, they add the intersection and the city. For most of these counties and cities, our website, http://www.kempruge.com/personal-injury/auto-and-car-accidents/ has city and county specific pages. I need to figure out a way to pull the information from the FHP site and other real time crash sites so that it will automatically post on our pages. For example, if there's an accident in Hillsborough County on I-275 in Tampa, I'd like to have that immediately post on our "Hillsborough county car accident attorney" page and our "Tampa car accident attorney" page. I want our pages to have something comparable to a stock ticker widget, but for car accidents specific to each pages location AND combines all the info from the various law enforcement agencies. Any thoughts on how to go about creating this? As always, thank you all for taking time out of your work to assist me with whatever information or ideas you have. I really appreciate it.

Increasing content, adding rich snippets... and losing tremendous amounts of organic traffic. Help!
I know dramatic losses in organic traffic is a common occurrence, but having looked through the archives I'm not sure that there's a recent case that replicates my situation. I've been working to increase the content on my company's website and to advise it on online marketing practices. To that end, in the past four months, I've created about 20% more pages — most of which are very high quality blog posts; adopted some rich snippets (though not all that I would like to see at this point); improved and increased internal links within the site; removed some "suspicious" pages as id'd by Moz that had a lot of links on it (although the content was actually genuine navigation); and I've also begun to guest blog. All of the blog content I've written has been connected to my G+ account, including most of the guest blogging. And... our organic traffic is preciptiously declining. Across the board. I'm befuddled. I can see no warnings (redirects &c) that would explain this. We haven't changed the site structure much — I think the most invasive thing we did was optimize our title tags! So no URL changes, nothing. Obviously, we're all questioning all the work I've done. It just seems like we've sunk SO much energy into "doing the right thing" to no effect (this site was slammed before for its shady backlink buying — though not from any direct penalty, just as a result of the Penguin update). We noticed traffic taking a particular plunge at the beginning of June. Can anyone offer insights? Very much appreciated.

Site is losing traffic after relaunch
Hello, We've just relaunched this site in the last several days, and we're seeing some small (but stead) traffic decreases, as well as engagement decreases. We're aware that page speed (about 4 seconds from a non-cached browser) and some 404s are an issue, our team is currently working on both. But we're really looking for some constructive criticism here as to what we need to improve. Other issues to be aware of: lots of our social counts went back to 0s, as lots of URLs changed, and it wasn't possible to migrate comments from the old system, so those have gone back to 0 as well. We wonder if this might be affecting both users and search engines perception of the site. Your input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Can you recommend a responsive web design company of template to accommodate mobile searches
I need to change my old Dreamweaver website www.endeavourcottage.co.uk into a responsive website that can be viewed and used easily on mobile phones. Four years ago when the site was originally built it was one cottage on one basic website but it's grown into a small letting agency with several properties, so I think it's time to invest in a fully functional website. Looking at Google analytics around the fifth of the searches and now done on a mobile phone each month on this particular site, and obviously that's going to become a larger percentage in the future. Does anybody know of a particular company that can produce good quality responsive websites? Or alternatively used a particular responsive website template which was good. One of the guys that work for me is quite a good web designer if we got the right template. The old website is grown into quite a large beast with a blog so I think the idea would be to change the main pages with the properties on, just linking back to the old websites quite extensive blog / historical interest pages which I've built over the last few years. I need to keep the old blog webpages indexed because they have hundreds of back links coming with longtail keywords producing traffic. Have you gone through the process of changing your main business website for a resonsive redesign recently and how did you approach it?

Panda and Penquin Fall - Could HTML Design an Issue?
Hi, We were hit hard by Panda 3.4 on March 23rd 2012. Then Penguin came along and slapped us down a little farther on April 24th. White hat SEO for 13 years on the site. I have been trying to discover the reason we got hit so hard, to date 90% down. We ae wiped. I have a couple of keywords still #2 and #3 and we see up and down changes in Google webmaster tools, i.e. a keyword is supposedly up 50 points then another down 50. All other 150 keywords that we used to rank on the first page for are not even showing up. I have a person that is about to do a full link analysis but since we never went after links I just never had the feeling that is where our problem is at, but definitely going to explore it. The reason for my post is that last night I spoke with an SEO person that has some pretty good credentials (9 years experience and works currently at large online marketing company with seo with clients like Honda) and he was nice enough to just take a quick look at the site. He said he saw nothing really wrong and did not think that we were hit for any of the normal issues people are listing, i.e. duplicate content, backlinks. His first impression was that we were knocked down because the site is "hard to index". He said the site still uses tables and a lot of our Doc Statements were for HTML 4.01 from 1999. As we all know, there are 'many' experts in this industry. So I wanted a little feedback from the community. Our main site was built in Dreamweaver using tables. We do have a Wordpress blog that is very small and just now posting to add fresh content. (posts seem to rank pretty good, this is why I thought, you know he may be right) Would an older site be penalized like this for using tables? What would you do at this stage if you had a site that is not recovering? I have now reached panic mode and have to do something, just not sure of the next step. I will be happy to post the URL if anyone wants to help with advice. Thanks,
