How to answer this request from a client?
-
Hello Mozzers,
I just launched a website for one of my clients and one of the update requests they had was to add the first link in the navigation again when the navigation drops down.
Here is an example of the navigation now: http://screencast.com/t/K6ooX0I9pe
For example, they would want "About" showing up again, they want this for every navigation item.
I know this wouldn't be right. How would you respond to them?

Hello Alex,
I was about to give you a different answer but as i was typing i changed my mind!
So at first i was thinking that you can't do this as it would create duplicate content but then i realized that was wrong cause it is only a link. DUH!
That being said, I suppose you could add the "about us" to the drop down but there is no point and it would look silly. I suppose you could do it and show them and hope they change their mind. If they are a tough client then maybe you can change the first "about us" to something else and not link it so it won't do anything and then add the second "about us" to the drop down. Otherwise I would just tell them that it is redundant and can make things confusing for the users.
Again, if they are a stubborn client then just simply give them what they want. Other than being confusing for the user it shouldn't hurt anything. Well I suppose it might make for a confusing sitemap, not that people actually use those.
Good luck!

Hey Alex,
I'd photoshop that picture and add the extra item, then e-mail it to the client and explain that it looks confusing to me, let alone to a site visitor. There's already a (clickable?) main navigation item with that name directly above it (maybe mention that it doesn't have any added SEO value whatsoever). If they are still persistent, I'd ask them to explain to me why they are so keen to add the duplicate item and go from there.
I've been on the receiving end of those requests all too often and sometimes, the logic of a client is hard to explain from a developer's point of view. I think it's best to let the client rule out his own logic in that case

These are good alternatives

I am assuming the hover on top of about brings the drop down menu and a click goes to that page.
If so explain to them the about link is only needed when people click on the about and it opens the drop down menu of options not when you use a hover.
Or you can rename the about to "Who we are" in the drop down and give them what they want

NO Meta description pulling through in SERP with react website - Requesting Indexing & Submitting to Google with no luck
Hi there, A year ago I launched a website using react, which has caused Google to not read my meta descriptions. I've submitted the sitemap and there was no change in the SERP. Then, I tried "Fetch and Render" and request indexing for the homepage, which did work, however I have over 300 pages and I can't do that for every one. I have requested a fetch, render and index for "this url and linked pages," and while Google's cache has updated, the SERP listing has not. I looked in the Index Coverage report for the new GSC and it says the urls and valid and indexable, and yet there's still no meta description. I realize that Google doesn't have to index all pages, and that Google may not also take your meta description, but I want to make sure I do my due diligence in making the website crawlable. My main questions are: If Google didn't reindex ANYTHING when I submitted the sitemap, what might be wrong with my sitemap? Is submitting each url manually bad, and if so, why? Am I simply jumping the gun since it's only been a week since I requested indexing for the main url and all the linked urls? Any other suggestions?

Also would this affect our website in terms of SEO and in general. Would be very grateful to hear from you. Many thanks. Old site to new WordPress site - Client concerned about Yahoo Ranking
Hello, Back Story I have a client (law firm) who has a large .html website. He has been doing his own SEO for years and it shows. I think the only reason he reached out to a professional is because he got a huge penalty from Google last fall and fell very far down in rankings. Although, he still retains a #1 spot in Yahoo for his site for the keyword phrase he wants. I have been creating a new WordPress theme for the client and creating all new pages and updating the formatting/SEO. From the beginning I have told the client that when we delete the old site and install a new WordPress site (same domain name, but different page hierarchy) he will take a bump in the search engines until all the 301 redirects get sorted out. I told him I can't guarantee any time frame of how long the dip in SEO will last. Some sites bounce right back while others take longer. Last week, during a discussion, he tells me that if he loses his #1 ranking on Yahoo for any length of time he thinks he will go out of business. Needless to say I was a little taken back. When it comes to SEO I use best practice techniques, do my research, stay on top of trends but I never guarantee rankings when moving to a new site. I'm thinking of ways I can help elevate any type of huge SEO drop off and help the client. Here is what I was thinking of suggesting to the client and I would love some feedback. Main Question He has another domain he isn't doing anything with. It's pretty much his domain name with pc added. I was thinking about using that domain to create a simple 1-2 page WordPress website with brand new content (no duplicate content) aimed at attracting his keyword phrase. I would do as much SEO as I could with a 1-2 page site and give it a month or so to see if this smaller site can get into the top #10 in Yahoo, or higher. Then, when we move the site he will still have a website on the first page of Yahoo for his keyword phrase. I hope I explained it clearly 🙂 I would be open to any suggestions anyone may have. Thanks

Q&A DB Script For Client Questions
Our clients usually have a lot of questions about our industry. We implemented Facebook comments (see bottom of: http://www.jwsuretybonds.com/info/faq.htm) on many pages throughout the site to allow our clients to ask whatever they'd like and build additional content using copy on how our clients speak, not industry expert vocab... I have some problems with FB comments: Our answers only show to people logged into FB. For others it looks as if we don't reply. The data pulls from FB, so we don't own it and it is slower than our server. You need a Facebook, Yahoo, or Hotmail account...I want anyone to be able to ask a question. Can anyone recommend a script that accomplishes our Q&A functionality using our own database? Also, I'd like to allow anyone to post without a requirement of an account. If I had a WordPress site, I suppose this would be easier, as I'm sure there are various comment solutions, but I have a HTML\PHP based custom built site.

Going Mobile - Advice Requested
Hi, I run a website called tvfoodmaps.com. We currently have a desktop website and a mobile app (native apps). However the largest community of our users tend to use our desktop site on their mobile phones. Our bounce rate is about 12% higher for mobile devices than desktop users and our pages per visit drops by almost 50% from desktop to mobile. My hypothesis is that mobile users when presented with a "designed for desktop" site are more likely to leave since the navigation isn't as natural. I'm considering investing in either a responsive design for the site or a dedicated mobile site and wanted the communities input on what metrics I should be looking at to determine "is it worth it"? Or should I just stick with service the desktop version to the mobile users?

Need to rebuild client's flash website
I am working with their web designer and need to figure out a way to rebuild their site which is currently all in flash. I was wondering if there was a way to do this without spending a ton of time in completely re-doing the site from scratch.

Hi Everybody. I have a large site that is made up of the main site then a large support site. The support site has a lot of overlapping content and similar titles. Would it be beneficial to separate the two? Thank you. All answers appreciated.
