Removing Poison Links w/o Disavow
-
Okay so I've been working at resolving former black-hat SEO tactics for this domain for many many months. Finally our main keyword is falling down the rankings like crazy no matter how many relevant, quality links I bring to the domain. So I'm ready to take action today.
There is one inner-page which is titled exactly as the keyword we are trying to match. Let's call it "inner-page.html"
This page has nothing but poison links with exact match anchor phrases pointing at it. The good links I've built are all pointed at the domain itself.
So what I want to do is change the url of this page and let all of the current poison links 404. I don't trust the disavow tool and feel like this will be a better option. So I'm going to change the page's url to "inner_page.html" or in otherwords, simply changed to an underscore instead of a hyphen.
How effective do you think this will be as far as 404ing the bad links and does anybody out there have experience using this method? And of course, as always, I'll keep you all posted on what happens with this. Should be an interesting experiment at least.
One thing I'm worried about is the traffic sources. We seem to have a ton of direct traffic coming to that page. I don't really understand where or why this is taking place... Anybody have any insight into direct traffic sources to inner-pages? There's no reason for current clients to visit and potentials shouldn't be returning so often... I don't know what the deal is there but "direct" is like our number 2 or 3 traffic source. Am I shooting myself in the foot here?
Here we go!

Those are great suggestions Lynn, thank you.
I read the article about direct traffic and it made me feel a little better... My theory at this point is even if there are people out there bookmarking this URL (still not sure why they would and the % of new visitors is quite high on the direct source) they will find their way to the new one.
I do have a custom 404 page that is super helpful and should easily get people to their destination should they happen upon our old URL. It is a broad, site-wide 404 of course and not a specialized one for this page.. I didn't realize this was an option and it's an interesting thought. I will consider it. It does make me nervous. I want to get rid of every trace of this page as quickly as possible.
We are supplementing with a slight bump in PPC in the meantime. Luckily I have it in my budget to do so. And the thing is.. we are currently outranked by all of our competitors so it can't get much worse.
The real kicker here is all of our competitors are using blackhat tactics. It's extremely frustrating. Their links are coming from Bangladesh Travel Forums talking about hair products and linking to completely irrelevant pages with exact-match anchor phrasing. And there are thousands of them... It's been this way for many months and I keep thinking they'll get penalized but so far it's us falling in the rankings. Hopefully this makes a difference. We'll see --
One thing I do notice about the other blackhat sites is that they don't have any links pointing at internal pages, only the subdomain. Our former blackhat pointed at the internal page in question (and the subdomain as well) and while I've removed as many as possible it's still affecting us. The thing is, the other keywords I target that are just as competitive I am kicking butt in. Top 3 spots for several of them and they don't have any links pointing to the specific page targeting said keyword. So I hope that theory carries over to this primary keyword as well.
I'm babbling now. That's what I get for thinking about work on the weekend!
Thanks again and I'll keep the moz-community posted.

Hi Jesse,
If you change the url even a bit and let the old one 404 then you will accomplish what you want in terms of cutting the bad incoming links, so if all of them are poison as you say, then this is probably a logical option. You could also consider a 410 response which might remove the page from the index faster and is considered more permanent (gone forever).
In terms of the incoming traffic I would keep two things in mind.
1. Firstly it would be nice to identify where that direct traffic is coming from as much as possible. Check out this article for a couple of ideas on what traffic might be hiding behind those numbers and apply to your situation as relevant. If you have a couple of days/weeks to be patient you can manually tag some of the likely sources to see what data that gives you.
2. If possible consider making a custom 404/410 page for this instance giving real users a link to the new page. Not 100% sure on the technicalities of how google will assess a link to the new page from the now old page which is returning a 4xx status. You could meta tag the 404 noindex, follow or even noindex, nofollow I suppose to further enforce the disconnect between the old and the new while still keeping the link available for human visitors.
Hope that helps.

Should a business requestion nofollow links from businesses it has commercial relationships with?
I am working for a motor homes company that works with a network of dealers. Having just analysed the site I notice that dealers are sending links to the site - lots of them. They are all follow links and are freely given. ADDED: There are upwards of a million new affiliate backlinks and then a load of pretty normal freely given backlinks with dealers who have commission arrangements, etc., with the company on motorhome sales. Now this doesn't feel right to me because even if it isn't purposefully manipulative, it may appear so because of clear commercial relationships between my client company and the dealer businesses. So I will recommend nofollow althought the site will lose a huge number of backlinks as a result. What are your thoughts on this?

Should I Disavow More Links
My SEO website got hit with a very severe penalty about a year ago and it was totally banished from the rankings for all of the money terms like SEO, SEO company and search engine optimisation (before the penalty I ranked in the top 10-15 for all of those phrases, top 3 for SEO company). I was probably hit for being listed in shed loads of paid directories, low quality free directories, footer links in client sites, keyword forum signature links and articles with keyword rich text links. A month or so after I got hit I started trying to clean up my link profile, I got rid of all of the client website links, I changed the link text on the majority of forum signature links and article links, I managed to get rid of about 50 directory links and the ones that I could not get taken down I disavowed - about 150. During that time I sent 2-3 separate reconsideration requests and I got this message each time: "Links to your site violate Google's quality guidelines" After doing all of that work and being rejected I pretty much gave up - things just seemed to get worst, not only was I no longer ranking for the money terms, but all of my blog posts tanked as well. I got my site redesigned and switched to Wordpress - I used 301 redirects and everything but they totally didn't work. My organic traffic went down to less than 50 hits a day - before the penalty I was getting over 300 a day. Then on Saturday just gone, almost exactly a year after I got hit with the penalty I noticed my site ranking in position 23 on Google.co.uk in the UK for the competitive phrase SEO company from being absolutely nowhere and I do mean nowhere. This sign has given me hope and the motivation to get rid of the penalty altogether, update all of my articles, get rid of bad advice in old blog posts and get rid of the rest of the bad links. Thing is that I am nervous to go getting rid of more links and disavowing, what if I do more harm then good? Do you think the penalty has been removed and I should just leave the rest of the bad links or should I continue trying to clean things up? By the way, my website is http://www.seoco.co.uk

Disavow links leading to 404
Looking at the link profile anchor text of a site i'm working on new links keep popping up in the reports with let's say very distasteful anchor text. These links are obviously spam and link to old forum pages for the site that doesn't exist any more, so the majority seem to trigger the 404 page. I understand that the 404 page (404 header response) does not flow any link power, or damage, but given the nature and volume of the sites linking to the "domain" would it be a good idea to completely disassociate and disavow these domains?

Have just submitted Disavow file to Google: Shall I wait until after they have removed bad links to start new content lead SEO campaign?
Hi guys, I am currently conducting some SEO work for a client. Their previous SEO company had built a lot of low quality/spam links to their site and as a result their rankings and traffic have dropped dramatically. I have analysed their current link profile, and have submitted the spammiest domains to Google via the Disavow tool. The question I had was.. Do I wait until Google removes the spam links that I have submitted, and then start the new content based SEO campaign. Or would it be okay to start the content based SEO campaign now, even though the current spam links havent been removed yet.. Look forward to your replies on this...

Is it still considered reciprocal linking if one of the links has a nofollow tag?
I have a popular website in which I include nofollow links to many local businesses, like restaurants and retailers. Many of the businesses are local startups that are more focused on word of mouth and often have no idea what SEO is. Seeing as I am already mentioning them on my website and my readers are finding them via the links, I want to reach out to these businesses to see me if they might give me a link since I have been linking to them for years. My question is: If these business owners decide to link to my wesbite and they give me a 'followed' link, will this look like reciprocal linking in the eyes of search engines? In other words, does the nofollow tag I put on my links to other businesses negate the reciprocal link penalty since both parties are not benefiting from a link juice exchange?

Link Building Plan Need some tips
Okay so I want to start focusing on SEO for my Web design company and I have been reading and reading and am now working on my off-page optimization and have some questions. My words are competitive words and a few of them are finally increasing to top 500 and a few in top 100. My current MozRank for my domain is 2.28, but my mozbar shows my homepage to be MozRank to be 3.35 Link Building Plan -Around 50 Directory submissions to high PR directories and high MozRank domains Free listings Paid Listings -3-5 articles written for guest posts Around 25 Local Business directories such as brownbook.net, whitepages, etc -Around 20 dofollow forum profile creation and backlinks from signatures -Squidioo Lens Creation( I will be creating high quality content related my website which would be web design, internet marketing, seo services.) -Hubpages Creation My question is should the content used on squidioo be 100% original, like can I post the content to other directories as well? -Article Directories Okay so from what I've read this is method doesn't really give much benefit with the recent updates, is this true or should I still at least submit some articles to article directories. I am also confused wouldn't distributing your articles to article directories be considered duplicate content? 20-25 Blog Comments on related blogs that support dofollow blog commenting, also will build some nofollow blog comment links for link diversity

Why are these sites so high with poor relevant links...
Hello, Keyword: TV Stands. I have been researching competitors for a client and we seem to be unable to understand why certains pages are ranking on page 1 of Google UK for keyword TV Stands. eg: http://www.furnitureinfashion.net/plasma-TV-stand.html (Google UK 8 - TV Stands) http://direct.tesco.com/q/N.1999542/Nr.99.aspx (Google UK 9 - TV Stands) The furniture in fashion has links from sites like: http://www.ummah.com/forum/ and http://www.muslimco.com/ which is totaly irrelevant to the site. Any ideas on other things as the tesco.com site does not have direct links to it. Cheers
