What to do when Demoted Sitelinks appear on search results under my main link?
-
Hello all,
I had some links that i didn't want them to appear under search results (under my main domain) . Using websmaster 'sitelinks' i demoted those links and it has been almost a month and i can see those unwanted links on SERPS.
Those pages don't even have high traffic, I am not quite sure why even they appear on Google. Is there anything else i can do to remove them under main domain search results.
Thanks
Seda

Thanks Lynn,
The pages comes up under the main page link and I think if i am not wrong, they come up because those titles are on the top navigation menu. Seems like Google ignore the demote request and show the navigation menu list. In terms of link popularity, other pages have more links than those comes up on SERPS. I will be testing a few things, if works, i'll share the details here.
Thanks again,

Hi,
I believe the sitelinks shown are dependent on what main page is being shown in the serp results so maybe you have demoted the link for the homepage but not for some other page that is being brought up for specific searches? If so you can add the specific page that is bringing up the result in the GWT sitelinks admin page and then demote the link you do not want for this page also.
If this is not the case worth making sure you have not made a typo or anything. You should see a list of demoted links and the dates they are valid to. When I have demoted links it took a few days to filter through but certainly not a month. Might also be worth looking at where this page is being linked to in your site, if it is a non important page but has a 'prominent' sitewide link on all pages then this can lead google to conclude it is an important page and if it is being linked to from outside domains this can be reinforced even more. Linking to it from less of your internal pages can sometimes help reduce its importance, but really the GWT demotion tool usually works pretty well so I would check the homepage vs internal pages and any typo issues first.
Hope that helps!

Google image search
How does google decide which image show up in the image search section ? Is is based on the alt tag of the image or is google able to detect what is image is about using neural nets ? If it is using neural nets are the images you put on your website taken into account to rank a page ? Let's say I do walking tours in Italy and put a picture of the leaning tower of pisa as a top image while I be penalised because even though the picture is in italy, you don't see anyone walking ? Thank you,

What should my main sitemap URL be?
Hi Mozzers - regarding the URL of a website's main website: http://example.com/sitemap.xml is the normal way of doing it but would it matter if I varied this to: http://example.com/mainsitemapxml.xml or similar? I can't imagine it would matter but I have never moved away from the former before - and one of my clients doesn't want to format the URL in that way. What the client is doing is actually quite interesting - they have the main sitemap: http://example.com/sitemap.xml - that redirects to the sitemap file which is http://example.com/sitemap (with no xml extension) - might that redirect and missing xml extension the redirected to sitemap cause an issue? Never come across such a setup before. Thanks in advance for your feedback - Luke

Google Search Analytics How to Get Search Keywords for a Page?
How do I get the keywords coming into a page on the new Google Webmaster Tools Search Analytics? Used to be there in the old version. You would just view your most popular urls and when you expanded the urls you would see the terms driving the traffic. How do I see the most popular keyword queries for a given page in the new tool? Alternatively can I still use the old tool somehow?

Outranking a definition result
Hello, I was just asked to help rank a keyword that has fairly low competition but the #1 result is a definition.
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | CodeCadet
I do not want to post the keyword here but for an example type in "resting" and you will see that Google returns a definition of the word. Now, lets say the result directly below the webster definition is a company with the name "Resting". What type of tactics would you employ to outrank a definition?! My first guess would be that I should establish this brand with Google by creating a Google Places listing for it. What else could I possible do? Should I just build standard relevant back links and optimize the content as normal? Thanks in advance!0 -

Local Search Results Tanked My 1st Page Ranking
My site was routinely ranking in the top 2-3 in Google for my relevant search terms. Then I started working on my local SEO. Now I'm in the map list at 1-2, but my site no longer shows up with the rest of the search results. I've heard that this has been happening to other local businesses with a big Google presence. I'm thinking that I should create some micro sites for each location listing that gives a location specific intro and then links to my main site. Then I can sever my main site from Google places. Here are my two questions: 1) Is this going to kill my placement in the map results; and, How long will it take for my main site to get back to its 2-3 spot rankings in Google's regular results?
