Updated My Business Profiles & Still Not Ranking in Local SEO... What Next?
-
I have used Get Listed and a few other services to update my profiles for my company Health Care Associates (its a home health care agency). http:healthcareassociates.net. I have added pictures, categories, descriptions, key words, etc. and it doesn't seem to help. We are still not ranking in the search engines for "home care grand rapids", "home health care" etc.
What else can I do to optimize the local search?
Todd

Hi Todd,
I would not be concerned about Google's OCR regarding images in your header. That is not my understanding of the purpose of OCR. But, I would definitely search the Internet for that call tracking number. Because you had it published in real text on the site, it may exist elsewhere on the web. You need to find all instances of it (if any) and edit them to reflect your authoritative local business number. Good luck!
-
Again, super helpful Miriam! Just read the article on Call Tracking numbers. Ugh! I changed the phone numbers in the content but left the tracking number in the image at the top. Yet, now I am worried about Google's Optical Character Recognition. We're trying to track how many potential customers call us from the site, which can only be done with a tracking code. But I certainly don't want to jeopardize our Local SEO.

Hi Todd,
Thanks for your detailed reply. I'll answer, one by one:
- All main pages of your website need to be optimized with your geography in mind. Remember - you are not trying to rank for 'home health care' or 'visiting nurses' - you are trying to rank for your keywords+your city name. You don't care if people in Texas find you. You care if your neighbors can find you and the local optimization of your website is a big part of what will make this possible. I am going to link you to a guide I give to all of my new Local SEO clients. I think it will be a helpful read for you:
-
Good idea!

Call tracking numbers are taboo in Local Search, unfortunately, because they cloud the purity of the NAP (name-address-phone number) signal you need to be sending to bots and humans. For more on this issue, read this article by Chris Silver Smith (http://searchengineland.com/for-local-seo-lack-of-call-tracking-solution-spawns-cloaking-70198) and this more recent one by Mike Blumenthal (http://blumenthals.com/blog/2013/05/14/a-guide-to-call-tracking-and-local/) to get the history and current understanding of this issue. These articles will teach you what you should and shouldn't do with call tracking numbers.
-
If the majority of your business is being transacted at clients' locations then you are an SAB and should be hiding your address. It's estimated that Google has penalized thousands (likely more) of businesses for failure to comply with this rule since they announced it in May of 2012. How you comply depends on whether you have the old or new Places dashboard. The new one makes the procedure more automatic, but I'm not sure which dash you have, so this is something you should research further.

Many good Local SEO firms offer audits, but their rates will all be different. You should expect to invest at least a few hundred dollars in a good one. I recommend that you visit that Professional Assistance page on GetListed and contact a few of the providers there to inquire about their rates.
Hope this helps!

Also, I checked my excel doc for local search listings and I did create a listing for Yelp, Nokia and eLocal. Is there a lag time with GetListed?
Yelp: http://www.yelp.com/biz/health-care-associates-and-community-care-givers-grandville
Nokia: http://here.com/primeplaces/places/show/840dpeh0-7d7af180af71446ba3ab8b5a54ab7c03?tab=edit

Hi Miriam,
As a follow up, here is some more detail.
1. I have a well written blog post that is locally optimized (http://healthcareassociates.net/5-reasons-home-health-care-in-grand-rapids-michigan-is-the-epitome-of-care/). It is well liked and shared. Do I need to focus more on optimizing the home page?
2. Yikes. I had no idea. I will have them remove the reviews.
3. Yeah, we have a tracking number to measure people coming from the website. I am having my web guy change the footer number. Does the number at the top need to change too? Its an image. We really do need to track people and figure out how they care calling us.
4. We meet with our clients in their own home. They rarely come into the main office. So I should hide my business' address? How will local map work then?
5. How much does it cost for a professional audit?
Thanks again!
Todd

It's my pleasure, Todd. I'm here to help!
-
Thank you, Matt. That's very nice of you to say!
-
Fantastic response, Miriam.
-
Miriam, thank you so much for the detail. I will respond more tomorrow. I sincerely appreciate the depth of answer.
-
Thanks Gregory, I just made some changes based on your suggestions.
-
Thanks Matt. I will definitely be looking more at the guide.

Wow! Thank you so much guys for helping. And Miriam especially, I sincerely appreciate the help. I will start immediately implementing the above. Such a huge help!

Hi Todd,
There are number of issues going on here. In the scope of Q&A, I can't provide a full audit, but will jot down some issues I see.
-
The site is not locally optimized. This is a big piece of the picture. You've got to work your geographic keywords into important areas like title tags and main copy. Organic factors are a major component of high local rankings.
-
There is a serious issue going on on your Google+ Local page. 3 of your 4 reviews are from employees of your company. This is a violation of the guidelines. These guidelines (located at: https://support.google.com/places/answer/187622?hl=en) state:
Conflict of interest: Reviews are only valuable when they are honest and unbiased. For instance, as a business owner or employee you should not review your own business or current place of work.
You should get your employees to remove those reviews and not allow staff to review the business in future.
-
Uh-oh! This is a big problem, too. Your Google+ Local pages lists your phone number as 616-531-9973 but the number you are listing in your website footer NAP is 616-530-0093. These numbers should be identical. You should have a single local area code phone number associated with the business name and address, so, seeing this, I suspect that you have a citation consistency issue going on. If you've got different phone numbers published in different places, this is definitely a problem and needs to be resolved.
-
Do you meet face-to-face with clients at 3101 Prairie St. SW or do all transactions happen in the homes of your clients where caregivers are rendering services? If the latter, you should be complying with Google's hide address rule. I'm not totally clear from visiting your website whether your business is a Service Area Business (like a plumbing company) or qualifies as brick-and-mortar. If an SAB, failure to hide the address on your Google+ Local listing will typically result in penalties and ranking issues.
-
Great you are using GetListed. Looking at your to-do list there, it looks like you haven't yet created a listing at Yelp, Nokia or eLocal. Once you've got all of GetListed's suggested listings under control, you can continue to build out citations at many other places. If you check out the Learning Center at GetListed, you will see 2 articles regarding best citations by city and best citations by industry. Check those out, and do further research to see if there are other places to see where your business should be listed.
Again, my remarks cannot be seen in the light of a full audit, but what I have managed to turn up in a few minutes of looking should clue us both in that you've got some pretty serious issues going on. These deserve immediate attention. If you aren't currently working one-on-one with a Local SEO consultant, you may want to consider hiring one, and there is no better list of trusted providers than the list at GetListed at https://getlisted.org/static/resources/trustedproviders.html. If I was able to find this many problems at a glance, you may have others going on and a professional audit may be the very best thing you could do for your company. Hope this advice helps!

Couple of things...
-
You service is focused on Grand Rapids, but no where on your home page do the words "Grand Rapids" appear. You need to use the phrases and the locations you want to rank for. Get something like "Home Care in Grand Rapids" as an h1 way up near the top of the page. Then sprinkle appropriate words like "Grand Rapids, Michigan" at least 4 times through the rest of the home page.
-
If your site is brand new, it may not rank organically on Google for quite awhile. Last I heard, Google had a 1 year "sandbox" that most new sites were stuck in. The sandbox is there to make sure you are a serious site that is going to stick around. Supposedly it is VERY HARD to rank organically above page three while you are in the sandbox. During that period you can use PPC and social media to drive visitors to your site.

Tough to explain where you should start with this without a 10,000 word reply.
It sounds like you might benefit from reading this... http://moz.com/beginners-guide-to-seo
Once you have read that, there are a few other things you need to do before thinking about building some nice, relevant and natural looking links.
- Add the keyword to the page title in an natural looking way
- Add some relevant content to the page and make sure you include the keyword once or twice
- Add a H1 and H2 heading on the page with the keyword in
There are loads of other bits to do but these are certainly something which will help you on the way.

Google Update
My rank has dropped quite a lot this past week and I can see from the Moz tools that there is an unconfirmed Google update responsible. Is there any information from Moz on this?

How come a page can rank in top 10 for medium difficult keyword, with poor link profile.
Hi Moz Community, The keyword that http://customsigncenter.com/ is ranking for is "custom sign", the keyword difficulty is 38 (according to Moz Keyword Explorer). Here are the link metrics for the page and domain: Page authority: 27 Domain authority: 18 Facebook shares: 50 Linking RDs to the page: 7 Linking RDs to the Root Domain: 8 From the SERP, a lot of its competitors have better link profile than this guy. How come the page http://customsigncenter.com/ can rank 6th for the keyword "custom sign". Are there any important "hidden factors" behind the scene? Thank you for any help and support. Best, Raymond

Google Indexing & Caching Some Other Domain In Place of Mine-Lost Ranking -Sucuri.net Found nothing
Again I am facing same Problem with another wordpress blog. Google has suddenly started to Cache a different domain in place of mine & caching my domain in place of that domain. Here is an example page of my site which is wrongly cached on google, same thing happening with many other pages as well - http://goo.gl/57uluq That duplicate site ( protestage.xyz) is showing fully copied from my client's site but showing all pages as 404 now but on google cache its showing my sites. site:protestage.xyz showing all pages of my site only but when we try to open any page its showing 404 error My site has been scanned by sucuri.net Senior Support for any malware & there is none, they scanned all files, database etc & there is no malware found on my site. As per Sucuri.net Senior Support It's a known Google bug. Sometimes they incorrectly identify the original and the duplicate URLs, which results in messed ranking and query results. As you can see, the "protestage.xyz" site was hacked, not yours. And the hackers created "copies" of your pages on that hacked site. And this is why they do it - the "copy" (doorway) redirects websearchers to a third-party site [http://www.unmaskparasites.com/security-report/?page=protestage.xyz](http://www.unmaskparasites.com/security-report/?page=protestage.xyz) It was not the only site they hacked, so they placed many links to that "copy" from other sites. As a result Google desided that that copy might actually be the original, not the duplicate. So they basically hijacked some of your pages in search results for some queries that don't include your site domain. Nonetheless your site still does quite well and outperform the spammers. For example in this query: [https://www.google.com/search?q=](https://www.google.com/search?q=)%22We+offer+personalized+sweatshirts%22%2C+every+bride#q=%22GenF20+Plus+Review+Worth+Reading+If+You+are+Planning+to+Buy+It%22 But overall, I think both the Google bug and the spammy duplicates have the negative effect on your site. We see such hacks every now and then (both sides: the hacked sites and the copied sites) and here's what you can do in this situation: It's not a hack of your site, so you should focus on preventing copying the pages: 1\. Contact the protestage.xyz site and tell them that their site is hacked and that and show the hacked pages. [https://www.google.com/search?q=](https://www.google.com/search?q=)%22We+offer+personalized+sweatshirts%22%2C+every+bride#q=%22GenF20+Plus+Review+Worth+Reading+If+You+are+Planning+to+Buy+It%22 Hopefully they clean their site up and your site will have the unique content again. Here's their email flang.juliette@yandex.com 2\. You might want to send one more complain to their hosting provider (OVH.NET) abuse@ovh.net, and explain that the site they host stole content from your site (show the evidence) and that you suspect the the site is hacked. 3\. Try blocking IPs of the Aruba hosting (real visitors don't use server IPs) on your site. This well prevent that site from copying your site content (if they do it via a script on the same server). I currently see that sites using these two IP address: 149.202.120.102\. I think it would be safe to block anything that begins with 149.202 This .htaccess snippet should help (you might want to test it) #-------------- Order Deny,Allow Deny from 149.202.120.102 #-------------- 4\. Use rel=canonical to tell Google that your pages are the original ones. [https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/139066?hl=en](https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/139066?hl=en) It won't help much if the hackers still copy your pages because they usually replace your rel=canonical with their, so Google can' decide which one is real. But without the rel=canonical, hackers have more chances to hijack your search results especially if they use rel=canonical and you don't. I should admit that this process may be quite long. Google will not return your previous ranking overnight even if you manage to shut down the malicious copies of your pages on the hacked site. Their indexes would still have some mixed signals (side effects of the black hat SEO campaign) and it may take weeks before things normalize. The same thing is correct for the opposite situation. The traffic wasn't lost right after hackers created the duplicates on other sites. The effect build up with time as Google collects more and more signals. Plus sometimes they run scheduled spam/duplicate cleanups of their index. It's really hard to tell what was the last drop since we don't have access to Google internals. However, in practice, if you see some significant changes in Google search results, it's not because of something you just did. In most cases, it's because of something that Google observed for some period of time. Kindly help me if we can actually do anything to get the site indexed properly again, PS it happened with this site earlier as well & that time I had to change Domain to get rid of this problem after I could not find any solution after months & now it happened again. Looking forward for possible solution Ankit

Pagination & SEO
Hi In one of my other Q&A's someone mentioned I may need to look at pagination. For instance, are these pages counted as 'new' pages in Google's eyes when clicking on pagination? http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/plastic-storage-boxes http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/plastic-storage-boxes#productBeginIndex:30&orderBy:5&pageView:list& Does anyone have any advice on what I could do? It's not something I have had much experience with. Thank you Becky

SEO question
Hi there! I'm the SEO manager for 5 Star Loans. I have 2 city pages running. We are running our business in 2 locations: Berkeley, CA & San Jose, CA. For those offices we've created 2 google listings with separate gmail accounts. Berkeley (http://5starloans.com/berkeley/) ranks well in Berkeley in Gmaps and it shows on first page in organic results. However the second city page San Jose (http://5starloans.com/san-jose/) doesn't show in the Gmaps local pack results and also doesn't rank well in organic results. Both of them have authentic backlinks and reviews. It has been a year already and it's high time we knew the problem 🙂 any comment would be helpful. thanks a lot

What is best practice SEO approach to re structuring a website with multiple domains and associated search engine rankings for each domain?
Hello Mozzers, I'm trying to improve and establish rankings for my website which has never really been optimised. I've inherited what seems to be a mess and have a challenge for you! The website currently has 3 different www domains all pointing to the one website, two are .com domains and one is a .com.au - the business is located in Australia and the website is primarily targeting Australian traffic. In addition to this there are a number of other non www domains for the same addresses pointing to the website in the CMS which is Adobe Business Catalyst. When I check Google each of the www domains for the website has the following number of pages indexed: www.Domain1,com 5,190 pages
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | JimmyFlorida
www.Domain2.com 1,520 pages
www,Domain3.com.au 149 pages What is best practice approach from an SEO perspective to re organising this current domain structure? 1. Do I need to use the .com.au as the primary domain given that we are in this market and targeting traffic here? Thats what I have been advised and it seems to be backed up by what I have read here. 2. Do we re direct all domains to the primary .com.au domain? This is easily done in the Adobe Business Catalyst CMS however is this the same as a 301 redirect which is the best approach from an SEO perspective? 3. How do we consolidate all of the current separate domain rankings for the 3 different domains into the one domain rankings within Google to ensure improved rankings and a best practice approach? The website is currently receiving very little organic search traffic so if its simpler and faster to start again fresh rather than go through a complicated migration or re structure and you have a suggestion here please feel free to let me know your ideas! Thank you!0 -
What's next?
What's next with the tool? For SEOmoz users that have gotten their Crawl Diagnostics and On-Page issues under control, what's next? In other words, what do long-time SEOmoz users do with the tool? What ongoing weekly value do they get? Ranking reports? Link Analysis? It took me four weeks to resolve all my simple issues, which you can see in Crawl Diagnostics and On-Page reports. (It would have only take one week, if the tool crawled all my pages upon demand instead of only once a week.) But now that all my simple issues are resolved, I'm not sure what else to do with the tool. I don't want to hastily cancel the service, but I also don't know what else to do... I'd even pay more for an actual human to look in on me from time to time and tell me what to do next. But I'm self-motivating, so I'll try to figure it out.

Deep Page is Ranking for Main Keyword, But I Want the Home Page to Rank
A deep page is ranking for a competitive and essential keyword, I'd like the home page to rank. The main reasons are probably: This specific page is optimized for just that keyword. Contains keyword in URL I've optimized the home page for this keyword as much as possible without sacrificing the integrity of the home page and the other keywords I need to maintain. My main question is: If I use a 301 redirect on this deep page to the home page, am I risking my current ranking, or will my home page replace it on the SERPs? Thanks so much in advance!
