Does having shorter URLs help with rankings?
-
Hello here.I own an e-commerce website (virtualsheetmusic.com), and some of our most important category pages have pretty long URLs. Here is an example:
http://www.virtualsheetmusic.com/downloads/Indici/Violin.html
I am evaluating the possibility to shorten URLs like the above to something like:
http://www.virtualsheetmusic.com/violin/
But since it is going to pretty hard and time consuming (considering the custom system we have in place on that site), I am trying to find out if it really matters and worth doing it from a SEO stand point. I am aware that from a user prospective shorter URLs are preferable, and we plan to pursue a better URL architecture on our website in the near future just for that, but this question, at the moment, should be strictly related to SEO.
Any thoughts on this topic are very welcome!

That's a great idea Dana, thank you for the suggestion. I will try that with some of our less performing category pages, then I'll post the results here.
Thank you again!
Best,
Fabrizio

Hi again Fabrizio,
Have you thought about experimenting with a couple? Perhaps choose two categories that may have slipped from page 1 to page 2, or even the top of page one to the bottom of page 1. re-write the URLs and then track the results. If you get the desired result, then move on gradually to update the others. This way you mitigate risk, but still find out whether or not it's something you might benefit from.
Just a thought.

Wow, thank you so much guys for your replies and insights, and thank you Dana for your kind reply! I am so glad to know about your daughter
The fact is that actually we have pretty good rankings for our major category pages such as the violin page above (currently ranking 6th for "violin sheet music") but we have noticed tat we have been dropping down, gradually and steadily. We used to be at the first spot with "violin sheet music" with that page from 2003 to 2011.
So... I personally don't like to risk losing traffic from those very important category pages, that despite are not indexed at the top spots, are still giving us a lot of traffic since we are anyway on the 1st page. What do you think?
Thank you again!
Best,
Fabrizio

Hi Fabrizio,
Mike's answer is a good one and I would also definitely recommend Dr. Pete's post.
What I would like you to be aware of is the risk in what you are wanting to do. If you are already ranking well, for the love of all that is holy in this world, leave your URLs alone. Here is what Dr. Pete had to say about the "risk factor:"
"All Change Is Risky
I know it’s not what the motivational speakers want you to hear, but in the real world, change carries risk. Even a perfectly executed site-wide URL change – with pristine 301-redirects – is going to take time for Google to process. During that time, your rankings may bounce. You may get some errors. If your new URL scheme isn’t universally better than the old one, some pages may permanently lose ranking. There’s no good way to A/B test a site-wide SEO change.
More often, it’s just a case of diminishing returns. Going from pretty good to pretty gooder probably isn’t worth the time and effort, let alone the risk." - Dr. Pete Meyers
You need to manage expectations on this one if you decide to go forward and make stakeholders aware that they could be looking at a significant downside (decrease in traffic and links) immediately after implementation. That doesn't mean that there couldn't be a significant upside eventually, but there are no guarantees.
I love your site by the way. My daughter and I have been subscribers on and off for years. Cheers!

Hi Fabrizo,
Shorter URLs are preferred. In your example I personally feel it makes sense to remove download and indici from your URL struture, because that information does not mean anything to me, the user (maybe it does to someone who plays violins... so that statement might not be true, but to me that information is irrelevant).
Now are you going to go from page 2 to page 1 with a change like this... maybe? There aren't any hard facts that will say how big of an impact that will make; however, the closer a keyword is to your domain in terms of your URL, the more weight is assessed to it in terms of keyword association - if that makes sense. So...
domain.com/downloads/Indici/Violin.html appears less relevant than domain.com/violin/ if a user is searching for "violin".
Also, Dr. Pete wrote an article a few years ago on changing URLs for SEO purposes. I think that all of the information still stands true for today.
Hope this helps,
Mike

Fabrizo,
Google loves when all your keywords, Page titles, Meta Descriptions all are in the same order, length, spelling and so forth, even though meta keywords show little or no effect as of late. Same goes for the URL's.
A perfect page would have the exact same URL, as Page title, Keyword, and meta description. So if your starting from scratch that may be a target to aim for. As far as URL length there may be a limit but its going to be a high number like 2083 characters.
I guess probably the best yay to choose the URL is to take a look at the Page Title name guidelines which is 20 to 70 characters. Now you can match the URL to page title with 70 characters.

Divi Help!
I've added our phone number and email address in the header settings in Divi. For whatever reason, when I'm editing the header elements I can see it, but when I view the website it's not showing... I cannot figure out what the issue is. I've never run into it before. Also, the menu looks different, it does not match what it shows in the header elements edit area vs live site. We 410'ed URLs to decrease URLs submitted and increase crawl rate, but dynamically generated sub URLs from pagination are showing as 404s. Should we 410 these sub URLs?
Hi everyone! We recently 410'ed some URLs to decrease the URLs submitted and hopefully increase our crawl rate. We had some dynamically generated sub-URLs for pagination that are shown as 404s in google. These sub-URLs were canonical to the main URLs and not included in our sitemap. Ex: We assumed that if we 410'ed example.com/url, then the dynamically generated example.com/url/page1 would also 410, but instead it 404’ed. Does it make sense to go through and 410 these dynamically generated sub-URLs or is it not worth it? Thanks in advice for your help! Jeff

Ranking Suggestions
Hi There, I am currently working on this site: completesteamclean.ca to rank as high as possible for "carpet cleaning windsor" on Google.ca and I can't seem to make any head way against the other websites ranking. I've optimized the page, created social media accounts for activity, even invested in Google Adwords and Facebook ads to try to boost my presence. Does anyone have any suggestions on any tactics/revisions I can make that may help boost my site?

Help! The website ranks fine but one of my web pages simply won't rank on Google!!!
One of our web pages will not rank on Google. The website as a whole ranks fine except just one section...We have tested and it looks fine...Google can crawl the page no problem. There are no spurious redirects in place. The content is fine. There is no duplicate page content issue. The page has a dozen product images (photos) but the load time of the page is absolutely fine. We have the submitted the page via webmaster and its fine. It gets listed but then a few hours later disappears!!! The site has not been penalised as we get good rankings with other pages. Can anyone help? Know about this problem?

Switching Url
I started working with a Roofer/Contractor about a year ago. His website is http://www.lancasterparoofing.com/. The name of his business is Spicher Home Improvements. He used to have spicherhomeimprovements.com, well he still does. He was focusing on Roofing and Siding but now would like to branch to other areas like Interior remodeling. So adding interior work under LancasterPaRoofing.com is not applicable. I do not think starting another domain and having two is the best option. I think he should go back to using SpicherHomeImprovements.com and I assume he would take a small hit but in time he should be better off. Plus the url is more applicable to the real name of his business. Thanks for any feedback I receive. Chad

My site still out of rank
Hello, I am working on a site for past 3 months, here are the problems with this site, 1. It had a forum full of spam becuase initially captcha was not included, 10000 spam backlinks 2. Affiliate page was also hit by spam about 4000 spam backlinks which were either not existing or porn etc.... 3. Too many internal links which were indexed, these additional links were generated due to tags, ids, filters etc. Existing SEO team decided to remove the forum and after 30 days they blocked it in robots. But within 30 days the site moved from 3rd page to no where. Now after few days lator internal links are also cleaned by putting following in the robots, Dissallow: / *? Dissallow: / *id Dissallow: / *tag Links are now cleaning up, all the spam and bad links are now put into disavow file and sent to google via disavow tool. On daily bases good quality links are been produced such as through content, article submission, profile linking, Bookmarks etc. The site is still not any where on top 50 results. The impressions are decreasing, traffic also do not rise as much. How do you see all this situation. What do you suggest and how long do you think it will take to return to top 10 when good linking is being done and all preventive measures are being taken. I would appreciate any feedback on it. Thank you. Site URL: http://www.creativethemes.net keywords: magento themes, magento templates

Ranking a site in the USA
I'm UK based and looking at setting up a site to rank in the USA. As I understand it a .com TLD is best but these are used worldwide so do I simply need to set the geotargeting to USA in webmaster tools? Or is there a better domain to use? With hosting the site in US and on page content related to US cities (I plan to create a page for each US city I operate in the the city name in the H1 tag) will that be enough for google to understand that the page should rank in the US version of google. Also how can I view Google USA search results - when I go to google.com it automatically redirects to google.co.uk and I can only change the location on the left hand side to UK cities. Any help much appreciated!

What to do if the wrong page is ranking?
What to do if the wrong page of your website is ranking and you cannot 301 it? Apparently an outsourced company the previous manager hired build anchor text links to the homepage, when those links should have been pointing to a deeper page. As a result, the hompage is now ranking for that term. But I think we can convert a lot more of the visitors if the deeper page is there instead. Obviously, I can't 301 the homepage. What would you do?
