Ranking gcctld?
-
I am working on a new site that uses a .io TLD. I have just started working to get the domain to rank for its own name.
What are some others experience with ranking and SEO for gcctlds?
-
As an update I am seeing a very slow start to getting the domain to rank in the top 200 results for its own name (riley). By this time with a .com I would usually have seen my site somewhere in the top 100 without much effort. Although, I haven't started a new domain from scratch for a competitive key work like "riley" in a while. I will continue to build links and eventually do more marketing when the site if further along.
Let me know if anyone else has had some of the same experiences with gccTLD rankings.
Thanks!

Awesome! The dev community has been using .io for a while, so it is natural that it gets considered a gccTLD. Really good to here him mention it.

Matt Cutts must have been reading this thread - check it
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJqZIH_0Ars
He mentions using .io as a "non geographic" specific domain.

Wish I could help you out more here, but I don't have much experience in this realm. All of my work has only ever been on .coms. Sorry!
-
Both of you have great advise and appreciate your help. Have you ever worked on getting a gccTLD to rank or competed for keyword targets with a gccTLD?
-
.io gets used a lot around the world as a general TLD, so Google no longer assumes that it's a site targeted to the British Indian Ocean Territory (here is their help center file on this). Your site will be treated similarly as any other gTLD. This is probably true for Bing as well, but I couldn't find any documentation about it.
If you're not US-specific, I'd leave the country targeting blank in Google/Bing webmaster tools. Either way I wouldn't expect it to make a huge difference. Just know that Google doesn't think you're trying to target the British Indian Ocean Territory based on your TLD choice. As CleverPhD pointed out, they use a bunch of other factors to help determine this as well.

Here is the Google info on what the Geotargeting does
https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/62399?hl=en
They would look at the extension, but also where you are hosted, location information on the site (eg your address) etc.
As far as who you target with the settings
"The tool handles geographic data, not language data. If you're targeting users in different locations—for example, if you have a site in French that you want users in France, Canada, and Mali to read—we don't recommend that you use this tool to set France as a geographic target. A good example of where it would be useful is for a restaurant website: if the restaurant is in Canada, it's probably not of interest to folks in France. But if your content is in French and is of interest to people in multiple countries/regions, it's probably better not to restrict it."
So, it depends on what users you want to target. If you truly want to be international, do not set it. I bet if your site is in english and your are hosted in the US and your physical address is in the US, Google will show you as a US site.
-
Great tip! I had setup webmaster tools, but not checked this setting. My location was set to the "-" by default. I changed it to US, does this mean that if I want to target international traffic I won't be able to?
Is this the same in bing? Going to look now.
-
One quick suggestion. Make sure in Google webmaster tools under site settings that when you verify the domain that you properly specify your location. I am betting that you are not based in the middle of the Indian Ocean!
Also there is a great answer here

Huge difference between GSC ranking and browser ranking for certain keywords: How to proceed?
Hi, There is a huge ranking difference between the GSC and browser for our primary keyword. As per GSC, our ranking is around 15 and when checking on the multiple different incognito browsers it's around 50. How to handle this? Which is the accurate one? Product expert from Google forums claim that what I see on browsers are the personalized results; but I tried on different browsers with different connections. Thanks

go.musafir.com/Singapore-visa
No information is available for this page.
Learn why The go.musafir.com/Singapore-visa redirects to https://in.musafir.com/Visa/singapore-visa.aspx with some UTM parameters. The URL go.musafir.com/Singapore-visa is a shortened URL which was used for SMS marketing and all of a sudden Google has picked it in SERP instead of Singapore VIsa Landing Page. The Singapore visa Main page is not blocked by Robots.txt file. Please help me to resolve this.1 -

Do header tags impact the rankings much?
Hi all, I have gone through some posts and comments where it's been mentioned that header tags will be considered as any other content on page. Is that really true? Writing up more relevant header tags as per the page topics doesn't have any impact? I would like to know the updated importance of header tags in today's SEO. Thanks

Has anyone seen any research regarding URL structure correlating/impacting rank brain results?
We are currently writing some "rank brain-friendly" content and were wondering if anyone had seen or conducted research on best URL structure practices. Any insights would be appreciated! Thanks, Zach

Significant Drop in Rankings without Explanation
My company has experienced a significant drop in rankings in the last month or so. How significant? Across our top 11 keywords, we've dropped an average of 6 positions. Some have dropped less (1 or 2) and some have dropped way more (38). We work really hard to provide great content on our site and have been building out our link profile with guest blogging on relevant sites (dailyshotofcoffee.com, for example). No major changes have been made to the URL structure or content on the pages that are ranking for our key terms, so I am not sure where the drop is coming from. For example: One of our key terms is "espresso machine" and we went from #9 to #22 in the last few weeks. We have not made any changes to the main content on the page that is ranking since September. Our on-site page report for this page has us nailing all of the critical factors, most of the high importance factors (not exact keyword in page titles - we use "espresso machines" as that is one of our other terms - or "avoid keyword stuffing" - unfortunately, our products are also named with "espresso machine" and i can't very well not follow those links or remove the term from their names), all of the moderate importance factors, and most of the low importance factors. It has been reporting this way since September. Most of our key terms are this way (haven't had content changed in the last several weeks to months and have great on-page grades). We don't engage in spammy link building (though I did some work this fall on cleaning up bad links a previous SEO company had built out). I'm just really taken aback by the sudden drop in rankings across the board. Any insight or advice anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated!

No longer ranking for non local local terms
Anyone seen this lately; I have a client who is in the food catering business and for the seo we target a lot of local keywords (event catering Hampshire, for example). In the past couple of weeks search engine traffic to the website seems to have dropped by about 60%. However, rankings do not seem to have dropped. What I have noticed is that up until a couple of months back, the client would be ranking first page in the Google local and also have a listing in the 'normal' serps. It appears that the non local pages have vanished. Checking a couple of their competitors and it seems the same there. This has led me to start to believe that Google are now only giving a local position or a normal position on the first page and not both, as previously. The non local pages are sitll listed but seem to have dropped way back to the 4th or 5th page when previously they would have been first page. It would of course help if the client were to give me access to the webmaster tools!!! Hate it when client's only give you half the information you need and then expect you to tell them what's up!! Anyone seem this? Thanks, Carl
