Been away for a while is SEO really dead ? I don't think so...
-
I have been struggling with the google updates but recently we started a new project and by using guest blog posts we were able to achieve a top 3 ranking. It delivered traffic and sales so SEO still works.
This is my understanding of the current situation -
1. Generic Keywords (forget it)
2. Go niche and long tail (but thats been the case for a while right)
3. Using related searches
4. Incoming links using brands and a wider range of phrases and urls.
5. Content thats sharable
6. Google plus buttons etc
This is my current understanding I would love to hear your thoughts.

Hi Garry,
You are certainly right - SEO is far from being dead and it has only started getting more interesting. Despite all the buzz about social media marketing and content marketing, search engines still bring in the bulk of the traffic for most sites and is responsible for many of the conversions.
If I may add on to the list, the recent introduction of Google Authorship has certainly changed the SEO landscape. It shows that Google is focused on recognising authors for their content. By linking up your articles with your Google+ profile, you would be able to have a snippet of your profile picture and a link to your profile underneath search results that correspond to your articles.
Studies have shown that these rich snippets improves the click-through rate, which is why content marketers need to work on setting up their Google Authorship now.

Google doesn't show proper meta for my subpage, how to fix it?
We have a subdomain blog.companyname.com. I am working on its English version blog.companyname.com/en but for some reason Google shows meta description from blog.companyname.com in search results which is not in Englsih language. How do I force google to show blog.companyname.com/en 's own meta?

How does putting a trial sign up code mid-blog post effect SEO? Do you think it will make my content seem less pleasing, therefor decrease the page rank??
I'm working on driving trials for our product - we have a number of blog posts that rank on page #1 of Google, and we get 2-3 trial sign ups per day from them. I'd like to put trial signup boxes about midway down each post to see if I can increase the number of trial signups that come directly from our blog. Do you think I can be "penalized" for this, since it's mid- blog-post content? Do you think Google will view this negatively?

SEO Adjustments Where Content Isn't Front And Centre...
So I am wondering what people think for a SEO strategy for sites where (1) the interaction is a one-off event and (2) content is not often shared or something that people want. Specificially regarding two sites this applies to: Site 1 is basically a mortgage site. So customers interact with the site once and then most likely never again once their mortgage is sorted. Mortgages aren't great content pieces and customers don't really read a lot of the content - it's part of the reason loan officers/mortgage professionals exist... Site 2 is also for a one off purchase but it's an embarrassing problem that nobody would share content for because they don't want people to know that they sought help for this. This also makes getting backlinks hard. Also it is a one off purchase, never to be made again... Am interested in how people would adapt their SEO strategies to these circumstances - where content development and promotion is limited...

SSL for SEO?
To obtain an SEO benefit from an SSL is there any particular type or brand which is recommended or has a track history? It seems you can pay anything between $20 and $???? (For that matter whatever you want to pay!). Any experience gratefully accepted! Thanks

18,000 'Title Element is too Long' Errors
How detrimental is this in the overall SEO scheme of things? Having checked 3 of our main competitors, they too seem to have similar issues... I am trying to look at a solution but it is proving very difficult! Thanks Andy

SEO Provider
At the risk of opening the flood gates, I'm posting this in hopes of finding a SEO provider on this site. I'm currently a member, and have learned a lot through this site, but I'm still having issues ranking higher. Because of this, I have come to the conclusion that I need a dedicated SEO company/professional who can help our company reach the next level. I'm open to suggestions of companies that you have used, or please feel free to throw your hat into the ring. Thanks in advance! AW

What do you think about this strategy?
I am new to SEO but have been hired to handle the SEO for a martial arts school. They had previously attained top three rankings primarily using nofollow on every link on the homepage except footer links which had anchor text of their keywords pointing to their second tier pages. Each of those second tier page also had all nofollow except a single footer link that had a keyword anchor text link going back to the home page. Seemed to work for them. I was going to keep it as as well as focus on creating about 10 separate wordpress blogs. They want to give each blog to a student who will post daily and from each post link to their site via anchor text. Anything wrong with this? Thanks Wiliam
