What is the best practice for removing a product page from an Ecommerce site?
If a 301 is not available and the page is already crawled by the search engine
A. block it out in the robot.txt
B. let it 404

Bryan,
If I were removing 100 product pages from an eCommerce site because they barely convert I would approach it this way:
#1. Run the URls through a tool to see which ones have external backlinks.
Often times none of the pages will have any external backlinks, and those that do are usually not very good. If this is the case - or if you "really" aren't able to do any 301 redirects (and if so that's something that needs to be fixed) - skip to step #3. Otherwise...#2. 301 redirect those with external backlinks to the most relevant page, be that a similar product or the category page directly above the product to be removed. Try to avoid redirecting them all to the homepage or some other "catch all" page, as these may be treated like a 404 by Google.
#3. Simply remove the pages and show the custom 404 page that suggests other products, or whatever messaging you want to show there (e.g. "This product has been removed from our catalog. Please see these other products...") and be sure to check the http header response code (lots of free tools for that) to ensure these URLs actually serve a 404 response (note: This should show up on the removed URL, as opposed to redirecting the visitor to another page like .../404.html).
#4. Since the now-removed URLs are not linked to from anywhere, either internally or externally, it could take awhile for Google to recrawl them and see the 404 error. If you need this to happen more quickly, such as when dealing with duplicate manufacturer descriptions and removal of page to recover from Panda, it may be wise to provide some type of html sitemap file listing out the URLs long enough for Google to recrawl them.
I would not block them in the robots.txt file, as that could result in Google not seeing the 404 and not removing it from the index (though they will cease to show the meta description).

Okay the question is regarding indexing, I should of been more specific.
If we are removing 100 product pages from an ecommerce site because they barely convert (regardless of a nice 404 page) and we cannot transfer the user to a relevant page. Is it a best to leave the pages live? or remove them (404) and block them in the robots.txt file?

Hi Bryan,
There are various reasons to remove a product page from an eCommerce store. Before deciding to remove a product page, you should consider if removing it will in fact help your SEO. If not, you need to look into alternatives such as 301 redirects or informing visitors in the old product pages that the product is no longer available. I'm not sure why performing 301 redirects is not an option for you - you may want to consider trying to get access to do this.
We have written an article some time ago about the different scenarios an eCommerce store will face when deciding to remove old product pages, and how to deal with each scenario: http://blog.referralcandy.com/2011/12/14/how-to-remove-old-products/
Hope that helps!

Right the questions is regarding crawlability, link juice etc..

I would create a custom 404 page that gives users options of similar products or product categories.

Long product urls ecommerce store
Hi we have a site in the mens fashion space who have long product urls which look like this: https://www.domain.com/catalog/product/view/id/13700/s/the-mate-tee-grey-marle-upm618g/category/120/ The site is on Magento. Are there any serious SEO negatives of having such a long product url and including irrelevant information in the url like product/view/id/13700/s/ & /category/120/ in the URL. Or are the benefits of changing them to more URL friendly product urls like: https://www.domain.com/the-mate-tee-grey-marle-upm/ Minimal? Cheers.

Optimizing unique pages with almost identical products?
Hi all, I work in a space where we have many products (specifically components and transistors) that are almost identical minus one or two changes in voltage, die size, etc. I'm curious if others in the tech / manufacturing space have had to tackle this issue? There are only so many ways to describe 5-6 products that are identical save one feature. My gut tells me to offer up more head terms in the title tags to draw searchers and get specific in the meta descriptions, but I'm open to ideas.

A/B Testing - Should I add product descriptions on my category landing pages as well as on product pages and if so . how to do this to avoid duplicate content
Hi All, I recently relaunched a new design on my tool hire eCommerce website and now display my products in grid form on my category landing pages as opposed to just a list view which we previously had on the old design. My bounce rates are alot higher than they use to be and my gut instinct is telling me maybe this is wrong . I want to do some a/b testing using a list view. My question is , previously in our list views we just showed the images and pricing and had on page content on the bottom of the page. The user would click on the product image and they would then we taken to the product page which has the product description , t&c, etc etc.. If I was to do this in my a/b testing but change it so we also displayed the product descriptions as well on the category landing pages . Is there a special way to do this as in effect, we would have duplicate content as the product descriptions are also on the product page?. Does anyone have any thoughts on this as to whether its a No No from an SEO point of view ?... Heres a short url link to one of my category pages - http://goo.gl/QJv5gw Historically we use to rank well for the category landing pages and not for the product pages. Our Rankings are down , bounce rates are higher so I am trying to sort both. We have good content on pages etc. Any advice greatly appreciated as always thanks Pete

How long takes to a page show up in Google results after removing noindex from a page?
Hi folks, A client of mine created a new page and used meta robots noindex to not show the page while they are not ready to launch it. The problem is that somehow Google "crawled" the page and now, after removing the meta robots noindex, the page does not show up in the results. We've tried to crawl it using Fetch as Googlebot, and then submit it using the button that appears. We've included the page in sitemap.xml and also used the old Google submit new page URL https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/submit-url Does anyone know how long will it take for Google to show the page AFTER removing meta robots noindex from the page? Any reliable references of the statement? I did not find any Google video/post about this. I know that in some days it will appear but I'd like to have a good reference for the future. Thanks.

ECommerce Products substantially similar but with important differences?
Hi eCommerce gurus, We sell a number of products, electrical in nature where the unit is from a group (sub-model is probably a good description) but each has important different physical properties. An example description is: #1 Clipsal C-Bus Wireless Plug Adapter 1 Channel Leading Edge Dimmer, 3A C-Bus Wireless Plug Adaptors allow mains GPO operated equipment to be controlled as part of a C-Bus Wireless network. The buttons on a C-Bus Wireless Plug Adaptor are able to control a load connected directly to the unit and control loads connected to other C-Bus Wireless units. Also, buttons on C-Bus Wireless Wall Switches can control a load connected to a Plug Adaptor. Each button can be programmed to function as an on/off, dimmer or scene control, as well as a number of other options. The other 2 in this group are: #2 Clipsal C-Bus Wireless Plug Adapter 1 Channel Trailing Edge Dimmer, 2A #3 Clipsal C-Bus Wireless Plug Adapter 1 Channel Relay, 10A but the item description details are really the same as #1. This trips Roger's duplicate content error and so probably Google's as well. I can consolidate into one product with 'options' but then can't list the three products discretely on Google shopping etc, and currently the 'Category' is a much wider 'Wireless Automation Products' which I don't really want to sub-categorise into 'C-Bus Wireless Plug Adapters' with three items in it making it harder for people to find. I can 'Spin' the description but this seem stupid and even more so for other items I have that have 12 different derivations of the same basic product Any Suggestions?

Is there a way to redirect pages from an old site?
I have no access to an old wordpress site of a client's, but have parked the domain on their new site, gone into webmaster central and requested a change of address and wait... the old domain still shows in the search listings in place of the new site domain and the log files show 404 errors from links to the old site which go nowhere - can anyone suggest a way of managing this on the new site - is there a workaround to what should have been done - 301 redirects on the old site before it was taken down. many thanks
