Huge increase in US direct visits to a UK site, why?

Hi all,
My UK website usually gets around 10,000 direct (Direct in Analytics) visits per month however for August this has shot up to 24,000! However the majority of these direct visits seem to be coming from the US and as a result the bounce rate is through the roof, 84%!
Why would my UK based site suddenly be receiving huge amounts of US visits? Any ideas?

Try applying this Advanced Segment, which will segment out your metrics showing only the traffic which originated from America:

Once the advanced segment is applied, you can look around on various reports and try to see if you can find anything which seems out of whack.

Here are a couple of causes of that, which I've seen in my own analytics.

A website monitoring service was added, that was somehow triggering javascript. I found this by looking in the hosts section of GA, where you usually see what ISP people are using.

GA is for some reason counting one visitor going to a bunch of pages as lots of visitors going to one page. The visitors were all from the same city, all had the same resolution of their monitor, version of flash, etc. I verified this because we happened to be running a second stats program on the site, and I saw they were all from the same IP and just browsing the site.

What troubles me is that the pages per visit is just 1, the avg time on site from these visits just 3 seconds and then a huge bounce rate, making me believe that it could be an attack.
However there is no common landing page - i thought this maybe the homepage if i was under attack.
In a normal month we will receive 10,000 direct visits across 3,000 pages - this month it's 24,000 visits across 9,500 pages!
Even if these were genuine US citizens surely the odd hundred or so would click on additional pages before realising it was the wrong site?
I don't understand it.

Same here, the US often generates the largest traffic on english sites because there are many more users in the US... But the fact that those are all direct users is strange and might be a bug. Sometimes traffic is shown as direct, even though it's referred from other pages or even search engines.

Hi Mark,
A similar thing happened to a client of mine. When we looked into it a company of a similar name was doing an advertisement drive in America.
When people were typing in the name of the company into Google and only remembering part of it if our clients name came up as well as the other company and people were mistakenly clicking on our clients website.
It is worth checking to see if there are any similar named companies that operate out of America and check their website to see if they are running any promotions.
As Chris says it is also worth checking back over any changes you have recently made to your link profile as well.

Hi Mark,
Without looking in depth my first thought would be your link profile, take a look at your links and see if you have had a new link that is US based pointed towards you. Once/if you find it you can work on removing it if you are worried about the bounce rate.

My local traffic has increased but USA traffic decreased..I dont know why!!
Hi Guys, A sticky one for ye. I have recently updated my site selling Jewelry in April of this year. Overall, Local Irish organic traffic has been stronger than ever in the first half of 2015. Yet in the USA, since March it's been at it's weakest for years, declining month-on-month. In terms of Organic Traffic for May & June, there's been a 30% increase in visitors from Ireland when compared to last year. Yet for the USA - the biggest market for us- there has been a 39% decrease this year over the same dates. It's the same for language demographics. Big decrease for en-US, but increases for en-IE and en-GB. It's not just the US. The site has taken a hit in Canada, Australia etc.So domestically the website looks to be performing better than ever before since the HTTPS switch, but it has taken a big hit internationally in our key market.We are targeting USA in search console, not changed any of the content in the site however he have added an SSL cert to make the whole site HTTPS like google said :)Any pointers are welcome

Naming URL for Russian version of the site

Redirect the main site to keyword-rich subfolder / specific page for SEO

I have two questions. Question 1: is it worthwhile to redirect the main site to keyword-rich subfolder / specific page for SEO? For example, my company's webpage is www.example.com. Would it make sense to redirect the main site to address www.example.com/service-one-in-certain-city ? I am asking this as I have learned that it is important for SEO to have keywords in the URL, and I was thinking that we could do this and include the most important keywords to the subfolder / specific URL. What are the pros and cons and how important is it to include keywords to folders and page URLs. Should I create folders or pages just the sake of keywords? Question 2: Most companies have their main URL shown as www.example.com when you access their domain. However, some multi-language sites show e.g. www.example.com/en or www.example.com/en/main when you type the domain to your web browser to access the site. I undertstand that this is a common practice to use subdomains or folders to separate the language versions. My question is regarding the subfolder. Is it better to have only the subfolder shown (www.example.com/en) or should you also include the specific page's URL after the subfolder with keywords (www.example.com/en/main or www.example.com/en/service-one-in-certain-city)? I don't really understand why some companies show only the subfolder of a specific language page and some the page's URL after the subfolder. Thanks in advance, Sam0 -
How do I get a UK website to rank in Dubai?
We are trying to get a UK-based children's furniture website to rank in Dubai. We have had a couple of orders from wealthy expats in Dubai and it seems to be the correct target market. Does anyone have any specific knowledge of this area? We are promoting the same website as for the UK market. Also does anyone know any user behaviour stats on expatriates using search engines? Do they carry on using the version of Google they are used to, or do most change to the local version of Google? Thanks in advance

Using Javascript to alter ONE or TWO keywords in International Site
Hi, What is the best way to target a language that has slight variations in it without actually targetting specific countries? Scenario: Ecommerce site that sells mobile phones in Spanish, initially created to target Spanish from Spain. We call a mobile phone a "movil" Now we want to target LatinAmerican users, which also use Spanish with variations, the most notable being mobile phone called "celular". We don't want to create specific sites via new ccTLDs, nor subdomains, no directories for each new country, and we want to avoid having two sites - one for spain, one for latinamerica- given that the only major difference is we say MOVIL in spain and CELULAR in LatinAmerica. What is Googles take if we simply decide to modify THAT specific keyword in each page where it is mentioned? Either by: a) Server based. IP Detect. that is, render the page with either one or the other term b) Javascript based. i.e. Have BOTH terms on all pages but using Javascript show/hide according to user preferences. c) Display the keywords with different font sizes/emphasis, depending on the visitor. Any ideas?

How to replace my .co.uk site with my .com site in the US Google results
My customer and I are based in the UK. My customer's site, www.blindbolt.co.uk has been around for years. Last year we launched their American site, www.blindboltusa.com. Searching on google.com (tested both via proxy and using the gl=us querystring trick), a search for blind bolt on the US Google returns our www.blindbolt.co.uk site. We would like it to show our www.blindboltusa.com website in US searches. Webmaster tools has the Geographic Target set correctly for each site. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions please? How can I replicate India SERPs from US
I was recently checking out our analytics keywords stats and I am seeing traffic noted as google organic traffic coming from India. When I do a search on http://www.google.co.in/ for those terms using a "incognito" browser with no cookies, and not logged in I don't see our site in the first 100 results. The same thing happens on google.com if I try to set the account in india. I am trying to see if this might be an issue with an adwords campaign not getting auto-tagged (auto-tagging is turned on in adwords), or if there is something else going on. The keyword campaign gets many more clicks than analytics shows for this organic option so perhaps it is an odd rare occurrence. I am glad to have the traffic, but I want to be sure it is actually tracking correctly as organic, or if PPC is not tagging for some reason 😉 Any suggestions or thoughts?

How can I view Google.com SERPs from outside the US?
If I go to Google.com I get redirected back to Google.co.uk and search results have a UK bias. I'm trying to research the US market and have a hazy recolection of Rand demonstrating how you can add a few characters to the google.co.uk url to see US results - just can't remember what video I saw it in. Any ideas? Thanks a lot
