4 Weeks In - Need to Develop my SEO Strategy
-
Hello All,
1st post \ interaction on Moz!
I'm now half way through my 4th week in an 'Online Marketing' role for an established travel operator \ agent in the UK and I now want to really start working on my SEO (and linkbuilding) strategy.
I'm using Moz for most things and I have highlighted (via crawl diagnostics) lots of warnings & errors (15,000 pages crawled, 12,000 errors and 26,000 warnings!) which I will be addressing with the web design company next week...
We engage (but not as much as we should) in Social Media and I have an excellent content writer who can write unique, interesting and informative content about our niche - which is quite large!
I am obviously keen to focus my SEO efforts on the content and I have created accounts on Web 2.0 (Squidoo, Hubpages, Blogger etc), Social Bookmarking (Stumbleupon, Digg, Reddit etc) and I have started to engage with other webmasters within the industry in the hope I can submit one or two 'guest posts.
Adding to that we have an excellent blog that 'sits off' our site and already has some great content on!
I am also looking at other content ideas such as; lists, infographics, quizzes, surveys etc
So my question is; do I continue with the 'content strategy' and if so, should i continue with the platforms I am currently using (as above)?
I don't think that I'm a million miles away but any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Andy,
First thing fix all of those errors and as many warnings as you can. Those typically are affecting your ranking, as well as your user experience, so those should be worked on before anything social or content related - in my opinion.
Also, my suggestion would be to think big, but start small. It sounds like you have a lot of great ideas for going forward with the website, but I would recommend that you focus your efforts in one area and master it... I mean really knock it out of the park. For instance, if you have Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, instead of engaging half-a$$ed (which I'm not saying you are, I am just saying that managing 3 social media accounts can be WICKED challenging to do right in addition to everything else you are taking on), really focus on one - whichever is bringing you the most traffic or engagement and really dominate in that area.
If you are a one-man-team trying to accomplish all of this, you may be spreading yourself thin in trying to tackle all of these different areas, that's why I suggest going after one area and once it is really rocking and it only needs a bit of maintenance, move onto the next - I fell you'll see a bigger return going this route. But, if you have a whole team pushing the website, I think you are going in the right direction.
Good luck.

Hi Andy,
adding to Jarno you could bring in your blog if your blog is off site the offsite blog is getting any benefit you may be receive for it. Bring it onto your site and it can help if people link to you etc. Obviously it's good to use the likes of Squidoo to connect with a community etc. just don't put too much energy into it, remembering again any links to it go to the main site and only a small amount of the juice comes to you.
It defiantly sounds like your on a good path, if you can connect to your niche / community the rest becomes easy.
Best of luck to you.

Andy,
i really do feel you're in the right track. Social Media is important (Twitter, Facebook and Google+) and whith that content strategy that you are using you are definatly on the right track. Should be doing fine. As soon as you cleared up the errors and warnings you should see some progression in your rankings. Document everything you do, is my advice. Never let a costumer doubt you without having proof of action.
regards
Jarno

Which is best for SEO: Dedicated landing pages for contests or templated page URL?
A colleague and I were having a discussion about this and wanted to get insight from the community about this. Most often we run contests on social channels, but for some we place them on our e-commerce web site - particularly those which have a universal appeal to customers since these also tend to be included in our e-mails. So our question is with regard to any links built to those contest pages, is it better to: have them point to a unique page, Example: domain.com/customer-appreciation-contest OR A reusable page/URL that can continuously be repurposed and updated for new contests. Example: domain.com/contests We discussed pros/cons of each but am curious if anyone here has insight or source that definitively advises which method is best. Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

SEO difference between having a Google+ Brand and Google+ Business page?
Functionally the Google+ Brand and Business pages seem to be exactly the same, but does having one or the other have an effect on SEO? Is it better to have both?

SEO relevance of Google+. Should we bother getting Google+?
I've read mixed results about the SEO benefit of having Google+ for your company. I'm sure that a very small % of my sites user base has Google+ so if we did implement Google+ into our site I don't think we would really have anyone following us...or in our circle or whatever they call it. So are you guys using Google+ for your business and if so, do you think it's worth it for me to if I know barely any of my users have Google+? Google really seems to be trying to plush Google+ for business, with replacing Google places with Google+ Business and requiring people to log into Google+ to rate businesses. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

For better SEO I understand I should be using Google+, but under what identity?
It appears one way to rank more highly is by using Google+. But should I start to build a community myself or as my company? I have a good Twitter following under my own name, which links to my company page and a facebook page (for my business). I much prefer to be a face on social media than hide behing a logo, but am faced with a dilemma and not sure where to begin: Will Google recognise the relationship between me and my business if I set up an account under my own name? Primarily it's my business I want to promote, so from an seo perspective it seems should I use Google+ as my business, but I really dislike 'corporate' social media?

SEO with facebook and twitter
Hi all, It's become more apparent to us all going forward after the panda update that social signals are becoming more and more important in regards to SERPS. Our website is www.capitalalist.com and is gaining a decent amount of traffic from Twitter. www.capitalalist.com/twitter and we have managed to work out what works for us on twitter and what doesnt allowing us to interact with our followers more and more. The problem is facebook. Direct marketing doesn't work here. Our page is www.facebook.com/capitalalist but we are struggling to get any traffic or interaction with our friends. Any advice on how to market properly for facebook for seo purposes? Thanks in advance.

Need a good Oracle friendly CMS to host our blog
I'm trying to convince my tech dept to take our blog off of a subdomain and move it to a folder on our root domain. Understandably, they don't want to build it from scratch, so I need some good CMS tools to build the blog. Our first choice is Wordpress but it isn't compatible with Oracle. Does anybody know of any good solutions that are Oracle-friendly? Our platform is PHP.. Thanks!!

Widgets like Facebook Like and AddThis - Any Negative SEO?
I could go widget crazy with my website, there are so many cool buttons and linking this and likes and etc. There's one that is used a lot, called "Addthis" that adds a series of small icons to share a page via facebook, twitter, etc. The javascript looks innocent enough, but there's a link, and who knows what google makes of it. Then there are the dozen or so Facebook widgets - are they safe to use without negative SEO consequences? Does anyone know of any other pitfalls with using the numerous addons offered free to enhance your site? Thanks for any wisdom out there! Jean
