Are you affected by the Gov't shutdown or is it just your .gov links?
-
With the shutdown came the take down of sites such as http://www.usda.gov/ and even: http://nsa.gov/ (even though http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/nsa.gov says its up UPDATE: now down).
Those .gov links might not be worth as much (pun somewhat intended)
But here comes an actual question as I was thinking about this, I am really curious...
Did your SEO efforts suffer in anyway due to the government shutdown, or is it too early to tell yet?
PS Isn't it also interesting that Google's homepage is choosing to celebrate Yosemite's National Park 123rd anniversary when all National Parks are to be closed in our nation?

Wow, the work of SEO, some win and some lose, never ceases to amaze me!
-
Thanks! Very interesting.... too bad we are reading it.
The upside of this for me is that a couple .gov sites are big competitors of mine. So, I am getting their bounced visitors.

arghh... I just tried to get updates for my daily blog posts and three of the .gov sites that I use are all down.
Those weasels in Congress should be fired.
-
"though - hopefully that doesn't happen" - yea, exactly!
Yea if you happen to have some time, maybe you cand dig something up in there. Thanks Dr. Pete!

I suspect the impact will primarily be on companies who do business with the government, but it would be interesting to explore the shutdown from a link angle. I suspect it would take a couple of weeks to see much impact, though - hopefully that doesn't happen, but who knows.
I'm thinking about mining the MozCast data to see how .gov's fare over the next few days.

Confused About Potential Spammy Inbound Link
I unsure how my page got backlinked on this "passive DNS" website: http://pdns.daloo.de/search.php?alike=0&q=66.96.162.137 This looks to be my only inbound link, so I am worried this is negatively affecting my site ranking. Is this 56% spam score link negatively affecting my website? If so, any suggestions? Any feedback or insight would be greatly appreciated as I am very ignorant to what this person's webpage is about and why my page was linked.. Sincerely, Hayden My website: https://cashflo.org/

Do old links from my own unrelated subject websites improve or hinder my rankings?
Several years ago I placed links on two of my other websites I own and control one my old company about CCTV installation and the other one is the official website for actor Sir Roger Moore. The links are going to my holiday cottage letting website http://www.endeavourcottage.co.uk/ and at the time I wanted to improve my rankings with these links which are still there. The vast majority of my other inbound links are natural and are on other people's websites with some diversity regarding the anchor text. So my question is the old links on these unrelated subject websites which are also stored on the same web hosting company causing a problem and would it be beneficial to remove them to leave them in place? Also several years ago I set up two other websites at the same hosting company also promoting holiday cottages in the same place thinking I might have more bites of the cherry, but they've produced very little traffic and are not ranked at all well, but they do links to my main letting website, could these because in a problem? My domain authority seems to be equal to some of the companies which are higher placed for the short tail keywords on page 1 of Google and they have less inbound links, although they are usually bigger companies and I know many things which influence rankings. I am trying strategies to improve the rankings, which have dropped to a small degree over recent months.

SEO Guidelines for Partner Links
We decided to follow an aggressive strategy with cross linking. We have cross linked all all the 6 different brands just above the header of a News Portal. You could see what i mean here www.in.gr
Industry News | | DOLdatacenter
Do you think that i should enable the nofollow so as not to get penalized by Google. We tend to use the same cross network linking scheme (in the header) for all branded sites. Google’s guidance on link schemes doesn’t specifically address these types of partner links, which don’t really fit the mold for “excessive link exchanging.” Thoughts appreciated.0 -
Am I getting traction, spinning my wheels, or just spinning in circles?
My story: recently "promoted" to creating our marketing department and efforts despite lack of expertise; new to SEO as a daily/weekly task; focusing a lot of effort polishing current webpage (redesigned last year); Hit most of the low hanging fruit in "Beginners Guide"; asked enough questions to know that now I need to focus on content at this point. My conundrum: There is **so **much information out there about SEO, that keeping focus on the tasks at hand is incredibly difficult. KPIs, Trends, Research everything I read serves to derail me from what might be my most critical tasks (content creation?) SEO is like my business (solar), you need to be as site specific in your design and install as possible, but only generalized information is available to the novice. My questions for you experienced SEOs: how do you keep focus? How do know that the project you're focusing on is the right one? Do y'all know of a resource for consultation/advising to look at my initial efforts so someone can help me navigate and gain perspective? I'm not looking for someone to solve my problems (although that would be nice), but more of a "grade" (ie-less of this, more of that, nice work here, try again over there) Thanks folks, any and all help is appreciated.

Strange video site adding unwanted links.
Today I was checking our backlink profile and noticed a lot of strange back links coming from grosezinga.com apparently this site is some type of search engine for videos, and it somehow pulls videos from Youtube, and Daily Motion, and adds them to the grosezinga search engine. I have never placed a link on this site, I do not want a link there, and I never even knew it existed until today. We do have video tutorials on the web, and somehow this site has pulled them from our video page without our permission, and added them to this site. Anyone ever had this problem, should I ask for them to be removed? When I do a Google video search my url is showing up on about a hundred different videos that are not ours. I don't want to be accused of building unnatural links.

How does recent Google update affect e-commerce sites:
Most ecommerce sites use the original manufacturer product descriptions in their content. The product features and specifications are the content made by the manufacturer. Sometimes manufacturers insist that the ecommerce sites should use their original content and it is impossible to change what available in the original content and rewrite it.
