301's & Link Juice
-
So lets say we have a site that has 0 page rank (kind of new) has few incoming links, nothing significant compared to the other sites.
Now from what I understand link juice flows throughout the site. So, this site is a news site, and writes sports previews and predictions and what not. After a while, a game from 2 months gets 0 hits, 0 search queries, nobody cares. Wouldn't it make sense to take that type of expired content and have it 301 to a different page. That way the more relevant content gets the juice, thus giving it a better ranking...
Just wondering what everybody's thought its on this link juice thing, and what am i missing..

Lots of interesting ideas. Thanks you everyone.

a 301 simply redirects a request to a new request with a new url. If the page has no external links then a 301 will do nothing for you. If you don't want the page delete it, remove any internal links and your done
Each request leaks link juice.
If you have links pointing to page A, and you 301ed page A to page B, then any link juice will go to page B , but will lose a bit of link juice, in fact you lose it twice, once for the link, and once for the 301 redirect. If the only links are internal links why not just link to Page B in the first place.but I would not remove the page, all pages have PageRank to start with, the more pages on your site the more PR, but the more pages to share it with, but with smart linking you can sculpt the more PR to fall on pages you want it to and less you don't want it to.

When I first read your question, the first thing I thought of was just recycling the URL's each sports season...
For instance, each year the Bears play the Packers, so in 2013 you write up your prediction on the page: mypredictionsite.com/bears-vs-packers.html and the page hangs around until 2014 when you re-write and re-publish the page for that year's game. Be sure to use schema and other tags to assign a recent Date for updating the page, and put something big and bold at the top of the page so people know what season the prediction is for. (Maybe also a tally of how well you did predicting their previous matches.)
That way any links it picks up over the years are pertinent to the Bears playing the Packers, and that could help with ranking. Also you don't have to keep track of perpetually growing collection of 301's.
Just a thought...

For me, I would need to know that the links had variation. So, for each page say A, B, C, D, and E, you have a week or two in between them. So page A runs on the 1st and it gets a couple of links. Page B runs on the 15th and gets a couple, Page C runs on the 30th and gets a couple and so forth.
The links to be truly helpful (at least at some point of which I could not tell you) cannot be the same couple of links to each page. If they are varied, I can see it having validity, but at some point if you are getting links to the pages from the same site/page/person, I think it has to ring a spam bell at some point. PLEASE NOTE: I cannot show you that anywhere that I am aware of so you are free to test it out. I just am using gut here.
Thanks

Hi, thanks for your response. I agree with what your saying. The fact is though, my idea was to 301 all the articles that are no longer relevant to the "This weeks previews" so basically all the old articles would be getting 301's to 1 link. so it wont be 301 to one page, then that page 301 to another site...etc
You know what im getting at? Sorry if im making it confusing.

With a news/sports site in particular you are going to have continuous stories you are writing. When you start doing one 301 to another to another to another to another to another to another... sooner or later it is going to appear to be THE SPAM CITY GAZETTE. You do not want a site like that. With a news or sports story unless huge and it is our byline, etc. you are not going to have enough juice on any given page to really benefit you. You ultimately will be attempting to move juice from internal pages to other internal pages.
You are better served to do it the old fashion way, just keep writing great content, etc. Archive the older stuff and let the visitor do their bit. If you get a page with a lot of links coming to it, you might want to leave it alone as people seem to want to read that...not get sent somewhere else.Best,
Robert

Check the Page authority of that page.If you have created new content and its have some page authority I surely suggest you to redirect it to new one. Its surely pass link juice.

Ranking 1st for a keyword - but when 's' is added to the end we are ranking on the second page
Hi everyone - hope you are well. I can't get my head around why we are ranking 1st for a specific keyword, but then when 's' is added to the end of the keyword - we are ranking on the second page. What could be the cause of this? I thought that Google would class both of the keywords the same, in this case, let's say the keyword was 'button'. We would be ranking 1st for 'button', but 'buttons' we are ranking on the second page. Any ideas? - I appreciate every comment.

Google's 'related:' operator
I have a quick question about Google's 'related:' operator when viewing search results. Is there reason why a website doesn't produce related/similar sites? For example, if I use the related: operator for my site, no results appear.

https://www.google.com/#q=related:www.handiramp.com The site has been around since 1998. The site also has two good relevant DMOZ inbound links. Any suggestions on why this is and any way to fix it? Thank you.0 -
Impact of simplifying website and removing 80% of site's content
We're thinking of simplifying our website which has grown to a very large size by removing all the content which hardly ever gets visited. The plan is to remove this content / make changes over time in small chunks so that we can monitor the impact on SEO. My gut feeling is that this is okay if we make sure to redirect old pages and make sure that the pages we remove aren't getting any traffic. From my research online it seems that more content is not necessarily a good thing if that content is ineffective and that simplifying a site can improve conversions and usability. Could I get people's thoughts on this please? Are there are risks that we should look out for or any alternatives to this approach? At the moment I'm struggling to combine the needs of SEO with making the website more effective.

Is a 301 to a 301 ok?
I have a site that has a lot of url differences. Due to coding we sometimes have to 301 to a page that is 301'd to another. Is there any danger in doing this?

Is it possible to lose rank because my site's IP changed?
I manage a site on the 3dCart e-commerce platform. I recently updated the SSL certificate. Today, when I tried to log-in via FTP, I couldn't connect. The reason I couldn't connect was because my IP had changed. Last week the site experienced almost across the board rankings drops on lmost every important keyword. Not gigantic drops, a lot just lost 2-4 postiions, but that's a lot when you were #2 and you drop to #4 or # 6. Initially I thought it was because I was attempting to markup my product pages using structured data following guidelines from schema.org. I am not a coder so it was a real struggle, especially trying to navigate 3dCart's listing templates. I thought the rankings drops were Google slapping me for bad code, but now I wonder....could I really have dropped down because of that IP address change? Does anyone have a take on this? Thanks!

What's next?
What's next with the tool? For SEOmoz users that have gotten their Crawl Diagnostics and On-Page issues under control, what's next? In other words, what do long-time SEOmoz users do with the tool? What ongoing weekly value do they get? Ranking reports? Link Analysis? It took me four weeks to resolve all my simple issues, which you can see in Crawl Diagnostics and On-Page reports. (It would have only take one week, if the tool crawled all my pages upon demand instead of only once a week.) But now that all my simple issues are resolved, I'm not sure what else to do with the tool. I don't want to hastily cancel the service, but I also don't know what else to do... I'd even pay more for an actual human to look in on me from time to time and tell me what to do next. But I'm self-motivating, so I'll try to figure it out.

301 - do i change old links once 301 is in place?
Hey all, I'm about to setup a 301 on a website that has pretty good SEO rankings and I have the ability to change all the old inbound links that point to the old site, to the new site - should I leave them pointing to the old site that has the 301 on it or change all the old inbound links to the new domain name? Which has better SEO value? Thanks for helping, Anthony

301 Redirect All Url's - WWW -> HTTP
Hi guys, This is part 2 of a question I asked before which got partially answered; I clicked question answered before I realized it only fixed part of the problem so I think I have to post a new question now. I have an apache server I believe on Host Gator. What I want to do is redirect every URL to it's corresponding alternative (www redirects to http). So for example if someone typed in www.mysite.com/page1 it would take them to http://mysite.com/page1 Here is a code that has made all of my site's links go from WWW to HTTP which is great, but the problem is still if you try to access the WWW version by typing it, it still works and I need it to redirect. It's important because Google has been indexing SOME of the URL's as http and some as WWW and my site was just HTTP for a long time until I made the mistake of switching it now I'm having a problem with duplicate content and such. Updated it in Webmaster Tools but I need to do this regardless for other SE's. Thanks a ton! RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.yourdomain.com [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://yourdomain.com/$1 [L,R=301]
