How do you find the source of a 404

I've recently noticed quite a sharp rise in the number of 404 errors on our site. Unsurprising really as we have just had a major upgrade of our site navigation. When looking in GA at the landing page stats the vast majority of them are from Google organic search. How do I find the source of the 404?

Try Open site explorer and "link opportunities" for any pages that are 404 and have external links. Webmaster tools will also show you pages that are 404 that have external links (though it doesn't show you the links) and Ahrefs has a similar tool

But that are only the internal sources...? Not?

For the quickness/effectiveness it would be, these in order:
1. Xenu
2. Screaming Frog
3. 404 Redirected Plugin (if you are using Wordpress)
Also once done also check with Google Webmaster tools and Moz tools to see if you caught all of them, this also takes a bit longer to update, thats why I listed it here, but you can also start with theses as well. If these campaigns/profiles are setup.

The Moz crawl will also identify 404s for you, and when you download the CSV, you can see the source of the 404.

http://www.screamingfrog.co.uk- is a great bit of software or Xenu
They are free and can tell you 404 etc. on your page and you can 301 from there.

Make sure you have google webmaster tools installed. On your dashboard, it will tell you if there are any crawl errors, click here to see where they are. Click on each link and it will give you the location of the URL and which pages are linking to it.
A quick solution would be to create 301 redirects for each page in your htaccess. However, it may be better in the long term to find all the pages linking to the missing pages and re-write them.

When should you 410 pages instead of 404
Hi All, We have approx 6,000 - 404 pages. These are for categories etc we don't do anymore and there is not near replacement etc so basically no reason or benefit to have them at all. I can see in GWT , these are still being crawled/found and therefore taking up crawler bandwidth. Our SEO agency said we should 410 these pages?.. I am wondering what the difference is and how google treats them differently ?. Do anyone know When should you 410 pages instead of 404 ? thanks Pete

How to find a skilled SEO sparing partner
We are in need of a skilled SEO sparring partner to work with. We have already done a lot of SEO optimization but the results has not been as good as we hoped. Is it a problem to use a 301 redirect to a 404 error page, instead of serving directly a 404 page?

When we detect that an URL is matching some valid patterns, we serve a script which then may detect that the combination of parameters in the URL does not exist. If this happens we produce a 301 redirect to another URL which serves a 404 error page, So my doubt is the following: Do I have to worry about not serving directly an 404, but redirecting (301) to a 404 page? Will this lead to the erroneous original URL staying longer in the google index than if I would serve directly a 404? Some context. It is a site with about 200.000 web pages and we have currently 90.000 404 errors reported in webmaster tools (even though only 600 detected last month).0 -

404 Error on Blog Pages that Look Like Loading Fine
There was recently a huge increase in 404 errors on Yandex Webmasters corresponding with a drop in rankings. Most of the pages seem to be from my blog (which was updated around the same time). When I click on the links from Yandex the page looks like it is loading normal, expect that it has the following message from the Facebook plugin I am using for commenting Any ideas about what the problem is or how to fix it? 301 to 404
Hello Everybody, I've got a technical question about server responses. Imagine this scenario: www.domain.com/not-existing-page/ --> 404 & domain.com/not-existing-page/ --> www.domain.com/not-existing-page/ --> 404 I use Wordpress for my websites and I can't seem to be able to configure it (or the server where I have total control) to stop it doing this. Ideally, a non-existent url should return 404 instantly, not first redirect to the "corect" url and then return 404. Anyone experiencing this and can help? Status Code 404: But why?
Google Web Master Tool reported me that I have several 404 staus code., First they were 2, after 4..6 and 10, right now. Every time I add a new page. I've got a no CMS managed website. After old website was been deleted, I installed Wordpress, created new page and deleted and blocked (robots.txt) old page. Infact all page not found don't exist!!! (Pic: Page not found). The strange thing is that no pages link to those 404 pages (All Wordpress Created page are new!!!). Seomoz doesn't report me any 404 error (Pic 3) I controlled all my pages: No "strange" link in any pages No link reported by Seomoz tool Bu why GWMT reports me that one? How can I risolve that problem?
