HELP! Google Business listing removed - check out my SERP free fall!
-
Hey Moz Community,
I need your help. I have (had) a google local business listing. I made some changes last week to clean it up. Now it's gone and I've had a massive fall in my rankings (see images).
Changes I made:
- I changed the business name from a spammy name: BYOL Graphic Design & Web Design Courses. TO: **Bring Your Own Laptop PTY LTD. **
- I added Local business schema to my website. I added my telephone, address etc. Previously it was all an image.
- I tinkered with a few other things while I was there too but I can't remember them all.
Other notes:
- Initially I blamed the dramatic drop on Hummingbird but after doing some research I'm not so sure. I think it's because I was messing around with Google Local.
- My listing is/was here: https://plus.google.com/111689574762050943425 (though it doesn't work any more).
- My website is www.bringyourownlaptop.com.au
Questions:
- Do you think the loss of my Google local listing could be the cause of such a big drop?
- If it is my Google local listing - Is there a way to find out what I did wrong?
- Is there a place to ask for it to be re-checked?
- Is it better to just start again with a new listing?
- Do you think it's tied together with a Hummingbird change some how?
- What else can I check?
- What would you do?
Thanks for your time.
Dan

Thanks again for all the help.
I'm trailing things slowly. I don't want to change lots of things again and not know which actually helped. I'll post my ranking ranges again in a week or too and let you know what I found to be the solution.
Thanks again to Miriam & Peter.

Thanks, Peter! Nice of you to say.

Hi Daniel,
You can attempt to transfer reviews with this form (https://support.google.com/business/#topic=2794267&ts=3054546,3141976&contact=1) but given the fact that your old page is gone, I'm not sure what will happen. I've not seen any form for transferring posts, but suggest you research that to see if you can turn something up.
Are you able to get into the dashboard for the new page? Have you verified ownership of it?
-
Hi Dan
I have seen a suggestion before that you can use Google Takeout to transfer content from one Google account to another, but I have never done that, so it may be worth investigating (cautiously) the options with that.

Wow.
Thanks for such a quick and valuable response Miriam.
I started working through all of your suggestions and I stumbled across a new Google+ business page. It has all my new updates but none of the reviews or posts. Looks like it's been around for a while as I've added a post in April but I swear I had another page.
Any chance my reviews and posts can be moved to this new account or are they lost?
My rankings are still screwed though. Do you think a change like this would effect a page's rankings so much Miriam? Or do you think it might be someone else hurting the site?
My new page is: https://plus.google.com/108827536040942698968
Any suggestions for this new page? Thank you so much for your help so far Miriam - I really appreciate it.

That's a really good comprehensive answer Miriam - for everyone! Thank you.

Hi Daniel,
So sorry to hear of the trouble you are having! My guess is that your issue may be complex enough to require a professional audit, but I will take a stab here and pointing out a few things and asking a few questions. Let me number these points, as they are sort of all over the map.
1. Normally, when you change the business name in the Google Places for Business dashboard, you will be required to re-verify the listing. Were you prompted to do so? Did you receive a postcard and re-verify? Where are you at in this process?
2. If you had a spammy business name on your Google+ Local page, did you also build citations this way? A ranking drop could certainly result from the new, correct business name not matching other third party listings of your business with the old spammy name. This is important and worth checking! If you find your street address and phone number listed anywhere in conjunction with the spammy name, or with any variant of the business name other than what you've provided in your Google Places for Business dashboard, then you may be dealing with the fallout of citation inconsistency and would need to do a citation cleanup campaign.
3. Second issue - I have seen a number of reports of 404 error pages like the one you are seeing coming into the Google And Your Business Help Forum. Check this search out and see if you see your experience/issue reflected there:
http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!searchin/business/404|sort:date
4. Next - is this also your business?
http://www.bringyourownlaptop.co.nz/
Could you be having an issue with duplicate content between the two websites? Always important to check on that.
5. Is your physical location at Level 2, 80 Mount Street, Sydney, NSW, 2026 a real physical office wherein you make face-to-face contact with your clients? Is the office shared by any other business? How long have you occupied this address? That's 3 questions to consider, I know, but important ones.
6. Since I can't look at the +Local page, unfortunately, I cannot diagnose if there could have been problems with it. You've been admirably honest about saying it was spammy, so that leaves me wondering if there could have been multiple violations of the Google Places Quality Guidelines that could have led to your being de-listed. I'm not saying this is what happened, but it is something to consider. I'd read through them and make a list of points besides the spammy business name that you may have violated. You should also try hard to remember what you edited on the listing.
7. Because the Google+ Local page is 404d, you can't click the 'Report A Problem' link on it, so that's problematic, but you could try this troubleshooter: https://support.google.com/places/#contact=1 You can select the 'my listing no longer appears on Google Maps option' and see if you can get somewhere with that.
8. Likewise, you could report the problem in the Google And Your Business Forum http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!forum/business in hopes of getting feedback from a Top Contributor there. TCs have the ability to escalate an issue like yours to Google staff.
Lots of suggestions. I hope at least some of them give you some ideas of what to begin investigating. Good luck with this!

Canonical question for cross-listed product listings
We have products that are listed across multiple categories. This results in muliple urls for the PDP, for example: mystore.com/shirts/shirt-101.html mystore.com/shirts/pink-shirts/shirt-101.html They make use of the canonical tag and point back to only one product listing url, however Google has indexed both urls in some cases. Has anyone else run up against this and does anyone have advice on how this should be handled?

Google dropping pages from SERPs even though indexed and cached. (Shift over to https suspected.)
Anybody know why pages that have previously been indexed - and that are still present in Google's cache - are now not appearing in Google SERPs? All the usual suspects - noindex, robots, duplication filter, 301s - have been ruled out. We shifted our site over from http to https last week and it appears to have started then, although we have also been playing around with our navigation structure a bit too. Here are a few examples... Example 1: Live URL: https://www.normanrecords.com/records/149002-memory-drawings-there-is-no-perfect-place Cached copy: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:https://www.normanrecords.com/records/149002-memory-drawings-there-is-no-perfect-place SERP (1): https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=memory+drawings+there+is+no+perfect+place SERP (2): https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=memory+drawings+there+is+no+perfect+place+site%3Awww.normanrecords.com Example 2: SERP: https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=deaf+center+recount+site%3Awww.normanrecords.com Live URL: https://www.normanrecords.com/records/149001-deaf-center-recount- Cached copy: http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:https://www.normanrecords.com/records/149001-deaf-center-recount- These are pages that have been linked to from our homepage (Moz PA of 68) prominently for days, are present and correct in our sitemap (https://www.normanrecords.com/catalogue_sitemap.xml), have unique content, have decent on-page optimisation, etc. etc. We moved over to https on 11 Aug. There were some initial wobbles (e.g. 301s from normanrecords.com to www.normanrecords.com got caught up in a nasty loop due to the conflicting 301 from http to https) but these were quickly sorted (i.e. spotted and resolved within minutes). There have been some other changes made to the structure of the site (e.g. a reduction in the navigation options) but nothing I know of that would cause pages to drop like this. For the first example (Memory Drawings) we were ranking on the first page right up until this morning and have been receiving Google traffic for it ever since it was added to the site on 4 Aug. Any help very much appreciated! At the very end of my tether / understanding here... Cheers, Nathon

Google not using redirect
We have a GEO-IP redirect in place for our domain, so that users are pointed to the subfolder relevant for their region, e.g: Visit example.com from the UK and you will be redirected to example.com/uk This works fine when you manually type the domain into your browser, however if you search for the site and come to example.com, you end up at example.com I didn't think this was too much of an issue but our subfolders /uk and /au are not getting ranked at all in Google, even for branded keywords. I'm wondering if the fact that Google isn't picking up the redirect means that the pages aren't being indexed properly? Conversely our US region (example.com/us) is being ranked well. Has anyone encountered a similar issue?

Page disappeared from Google index. Google cache shows page is being redirected.
My URL is: http://shop.nordstrom.com/c/converse Hi. The week before last, my top Converse page went missing from the Google index. When I "fetch as Googlebot" I am able to get the page and "submit" it to the index. I have done this several times and still cannot get the page to show up. When I look at the Google cache of the page, it comes up with a different page. http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http://shop.nordstrom.com/c/converse shows: http://shop.nordstrom.com/c/pop-in-olivia-kim Back story: As far as I know we have never redirected the Converse page to the Pop-In page. However the reverse may be true. We ran a Converse based Pop-In campaign but that used the Converse page and not the regular Pop-In page. Though the page comes back with a 200 status, it looks like Google thinks the page is being redirected. We were ranking #4 for "converse" - monthly searches = 550,000. My SEO traffic for the page has tanked since it has gone missing. Any help would be much appreciated. Stephan

Business Address SERP problem in Google- What DO?
Hi Guys, I have a business at "30 Auto Center Dr, Irivne, CA" when I search for "30 Auto Center Dr" Google search results will show a map result for 30 auto center dr, Tustin CA. It will show this map result for all surrounding cities and will only show Irivne, if I set my location to irvine. I'm not sure why this is happening. Cities that are closer to Irvine are also showing a map to the address located in Tustin. Since Google is choosing to display this map result, I feel that this is causing me to lose customers. I have already done business listings and local seo to my current address, and was wondering if it would be worth it to change my address (My building has more than one address). Would this even be a good idea? What do you guys think are my options here? attached is the screenshot of the map result I am talking about. 1ywIMVt.png

Where Are My Listings??
Can someone please explain this to me? I'm not getting a ton of impressions organically on Google, but according to WMT many of my keywords are ranking number 1. This doesn't seem right and when I search they aren't there. This site is pretty new so I don't expect it to rank well yet for these competitive keywords. I am running AdWords, but according the help section, AdWords numbers are not included here. I attached a picture to this post. Does anyone know what's going on? wmt_zps6a3f39a1.png

Just relaunched a website - why did it fall in Google's SERPs?
I work for a marketing agency that just redesigned, rewrote and relaunched a client's website. They used to rank #4 on Google for the company's name (which is a fairly common one, for what it's worth). Now they're at #10 and want to know why. I'd like to explain to them what happened but don't know myself. Can someone explain it to me? And can I tell them if/when their ranking might go back up? In case this matters, I can tell you that it looks like Google hasn't yet crawled the new site. Anyway, thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Why would you remove a canonical link?
Currently, my client's blog makes a duplicate page every time someone comments on a post. The previous SEO consultant told the developer to not put a canonical link directing it to the main blog post. Did taking out the canonical link result in these duplicate pages? My question is why would she recommend this action? Is it best to now add in the canonical link in or should we implement a 301 redirect or insert a index: no follow? Would adding a canonical link keep duplicate pages from happening in the future?
