Google Keyword Tool Alternatives
-
Hey All,
So ever since Google shut down the Keyword Tool we have used the keyword planner and a few other tools only to find they aren't quite the same, I was wondering what everyone is using now to get there keyword research and average traffic estimates ?
We previous used keyword tool for phrase match and now not much offers phrase match or provides us with what seems as accurate results.
We have tried Word Tracker after a numerous amount of research to find a alternative to the keyword tool, and found that the results are very different from the Google Keyword Planner, 1 noticeable result would be of "Web Design Melbourne", in Word Tracker it showed the average search of 9,900 (per month or year I'm not sure) and we compared that to the Google Keyword Planner and it showed 3,000.
I have looked over a number of tools and found they weren't quite what we are looking for (Word Tracker, SEMRush, Google Keyword Planner) so I have turned to the MOZ Community.
So my first question for everyone would be:
A) what do you use for Keyword research and average search estimates now (any good tools with phrase match)?
B) If you have used Word Tracker have you found accurate results in your keyword research?
If you have found any tools that have proved beneficial and useful please let me know (paid or free)
Thank you

Hi Jake
You could try http://www.keywordeye.com. They offer a free account which provides 10 keyword searches per day and up to 100 keyword suggestions per report. Their Pro version is not very much per month and there is a 30 day free trial of that.
I have played around with this tool rather than used it seriously, but it is worth a look as an alternative to the Google Keyword Planner.
I hope that helps,

Hey all,
Thank you for your answers, and yes i see your points, running a small ad words campaign would let me see what people are searching based around my ad, click through rate, impressions and would be a lot cheaper then word tracker depending on how many campaigns we have starting.
But i was just wondering since we use a keyword report to present to a potential client we don't really want to wait a week or two and spend money on a report for a potential client seeing as they may still walk away depending on the results.
So do use know of any other tools like the Google keyword tool that i can place my keyword list in and get a avg search traffic estimate and phrase match results?
Again thank you for your answers
Cheers

I agree with Gregory and Michael that doing and Adwords campaign can be a good way to start. Also remember that the various keyword tools do not take seseanality into account but agregate the search into a 12 month average.
When doing keyword research through Adwords also remember that a large part of the clicks fall in the adwords section and not the organic section, so a pos 1 in organic will not give you the same amount of clicks as pos 1 in adwords for most search terms.

I'll second what Michael said. If you are just interested in searches in or around Melbourne you can limit it to just AU searches. Doing that will keep the cost quite low.
If you run it about two weeks, you will also be able to pull up the full report that tells the exact phrases people searched for and the quantity of those searches. Always some interesting surprises in that report...

Hey Jake,
One of the best things we do is run small adwords campaigns on certain keywords just to get a feel for the traffic. It may cost you $15-$100, and a week or two to get a great sampling of data, but in the end, it helps knowing that you are not wasting your time on a keyword the brings in zero impressions or traffic. Plus, the correlation of higher cost per click and the amount of links you will need to get that keyword (or phrase) to rank, go hand in hand (higher price - more links).
Pricing for Wordtracker begins at $69 monthly; you could easily gain all the data you need by a sample adwords campaign.
Are you opposed to using Adwords?
B) I have not used word tracker, so I won't answer that one.
Eli

How important is a keyword rich domain name for ranking?
I've read that Google has lowered the relevancy of a keyword rich domain name in recent years, but I have a scenario with a client that makes me think otherwise. My client has a particular phrase that they're trying to get rank for and are currently in position 3 of Google. Their primary competitor has position1. Using the Keyword Analysis in Moz Pro, my client has a competitor beat out in Page Authority (45 vs 36), # Root Domains Linking to Page (98 vs 9), Domain Authority (35 vs 24), and # Root Domains Linking to Domain (122 vs 15). The main difference is that the competitor has the exact phrase as part of their domain. Other than that, the phrase (on my client's site) is used in title tags, heading tags, and throughout page content. I can provide additional information if necessary, but does anybody have any general advice about this scenario?

Possible google sandbox issue? Organically ranking page 1 for our number 1 keyword, but page 5 sometimes 6 on google?
What are some things I can look into to figure out why google is ranking us on page 5 sometimes page 6, with some slight rank boosts to rank 36 from 48 but then falls right back. While Yahoo and Bing rank us page 1 consistently, without these big drops back. I use google search ( webmaster tools ) daily, fix 404s and make sure to fetch new content I create. Our site is within the Sandbox issue time frame, google 1st indexed the site about a year and a half ago, the site has been through various SEO service checks, and has had those issues fixed ( some bigcommerce won't allow, such as full sitewide ssl and a few other small factors ) but all the big stuff was handled or will be 100% handled after this redesign is complete. But just still seems we're stuck in the google hole again. We do use adwords, but no clear signs as to why we'd suffer such hardships with google ranking, only thing we don't have optimized in terms of on page optimization from moz is keyword in url, of which will be changing within the next month or two, as we're rolling our a new redesign with SEO 100% at the forefront, nice url paths, with keywords in their url, much more responsive site that uses less resources. But before we release this redesign, I'd like to find out what toe we stubbed of google's to give us such a ranking blackeye... We don't have that many backlinks, and I know these are a huge factor, however, building quality backlinks it's harder than walking on water at time and on the same level as spinning hay into gold. Any ideas community...

Keyword - Competition between competitors
So, I'm about 2-3 weeks into my subscription and see a renewal coming. I love the information I'm getting - but I really want to maximize my capabilities with these tools. Any article/blogs or forum post suggestions that I should read would be awesome, right now I'm still in that phase where i see lots of cool things - but have no idea to fully use them to really give me that even bigger boost. My First Question is - There are some keywords, that I climb and sometimes slip. But overall a competitor and i flip flop between 15-22 range for it. What would be a good way for me to really add that extra push to throw me down into the top ten and leave them in the dust?.. Also on the Keyword topic - There are a lot of keywords they probably rank for that I don't, what is the best way to go about identifying keywords they may targeting/have a good presence in that I'm not aware of. I do have a site that is on multiple newspapers, and .gov sites. Among other things... This has already proven to be very good for me. But I'm 99% sure I have a few/lot of leaks, that if they were plugged - We would see a lot of good things come from those results.
