Sub domain on root domain
-
Hello,
I have a question that I can't find a good answer on.
I have a site, actually a "portal"/ "directory" for service providers.
Now, for start, we opened every service provider own page on our site, but now we get a lot of applications from those providers that thy want sites from their own.
We want to make every service provider his own site, but on sub domain url. ( they don’t mind… its ok for them)
So, my site is www.exaple.com
There site will be: provider.exaple.com
Now I have two questions:
1. can it harm my site in SEO?
2. if one from those sub domain , punished by google because is owner do "black hat seo" , how it will affect the rood domin? It can make the root domain to get punished?
Thanks!! -
Federico brought up some good points when he suggested sub-directories above, but I'd go with sub-domains in this case. If a service provider can't figure out how to build their own website they are unlikely to get any decent links, let alone one from CNN. Policing them all would be expensive, possibly even unscaleable for the business model.
I think the use of subdomains as outlined in his original question would be one of the few proper reasons to have them.
Just make sure you verify each and every one of them in GWT so you know if/when any "manual actions" or important messages come through from Google.
Getting SEOs to agree on sub-domain Vs sub-directory Vs separate TLD can be like trying to herd cats sometimes. That's just the way it is.

Nope, that post is completely wrong my friend. Besides being from 2011 or even earlier, the writer probably misunderstood to how Google handles external/internal links in WMT.
What is confirmed is that www.domain.com and other.domain.com ARE different domains and a penalty to other.domain.com DOES NOT affect www.domain.com. Otherwise, all blogspot, wordpress.com and others should be penalized by now.

That is how it used to be now it is different

Google is treating the domain as one domian

The way you are thinking of going has its pros and cons.
As subdomains are treated like different domains, a penalized subdomain won't affect your root domain. But neither will be the GOOD thinks that a subdomain may get.
Suppose one of your service providers gets a "super-cool" backlink from an outside source, say CNN links to it. Then all that juice will only go to that provider, you, the root domain, don't get ANY benefit from it, (just like when that subdomain gets a penalty, you don't get it).
Now, the way I would go instead, is simpler, plus you can benefit for any pagerank flowing to your root domain: domain.com/provider then you simply monitor your "provider" and if you detect any black hat SEO, just penalize them yourself by having their site removed (make sure you write a good TERMS OF SERVICE to explain all the rules). So, if any provider gets a penalty, you just remove their site and a 404 code return will be enough, as links to 404s are not flowing pagerank to your site.
Hope that helps!

your questions or
1. can it harm my site in SEO? YES
2. if one from those sub domain , punished by google because is owner do "black hat seo" , how it will affect the rood domin? It can make the root domain to get punished?
Thanks!!Absolutely you're talking about giving people access to your website essentially. Or your domain to be more granular. Google and moreover Moz have domain trust rankings and if somebody is doing black hat SEO such as building links that are from link farms or penalized websites to your subdomain which is still on your company's domain. It will affect your overall domain trust and rank
What you have to think about it is your letting these people control a part of your website. If they do things that are not kosher with Google then you will pay the price.
Sorry for the short answer to the top question I think I answered both questions in the 2nd answer.
I would use a .org , .net or .co if you are going to allow people to build something on your network don't give them access to your domain.
If they did all positive things it would help you obviously. However I don't know what you think these people's intentions are going to be.
I hope I was of help,
Thomas

Google treats pages from main website and sub folder/sub directory differently?
Hi all, We have a sub directory like website.com/help/. This is a differently hosted and served content. So I wonder how Google treats pages from this sub directory. Will the same priority will be given for these pages compared to main website pages? Will there be any ranking difference when same page is from main website or sub directory. I mean like below page. Page from main website: www.website.com/page1/ Page from sub-directory: www.website.com/help/page1/ So which page will have more importance in search results?

Http & https domain names
We currently have a site which we found SEM Rush to show that their were duplicate pages for the site. Upon further inspection we realized this was because there existed both http:// and https:// Versions of the site. Is this a problem for Google that the site appears for both http:// and https:// and that there are therefore duplicate versions of the site?

Sub Domain Usage
I see that the gap uses gap.com, oldnavy.gap.com and bananarepublic.gap.com. Wouldn't a better approach for SEO to have oldnavy.com, bananarepublic.com and gap.com all separate? Is there any benefit to using the approach of store1.parentcompany.com, store2.parentcompany.com etc? What are the pros and cons to each?

Should sub domains to organise content and directories?
I'm working on a site that has directories for service providers and content about those services. My idea is to organise the services into groups, e.g. Web, Graphic, Software Development since they are different topics. Each sub domain (hub) has it's own sales pages, directory of services providers and blog content. E.g. the web hub has web.servicecrowd.com.au (hub home) web.servicecrowd.com.au/blog (hub blog) http://web.servicecrowd.com.au/dir/p (hub directory) Is this overkill or will it help in the long run when there are hundreds of services like dog grooming and DJing? Seems better to have separate sub domains and unique blogs for groups of services and content topics.

How do I list the subdomains of a domain?
Hi Mozers, I am trying to find what subdomains are currently active on a particular domain. Is there a way to get a list of this information? The only way I could think of doing it is to run a google search on; site:example.com -site:www.example.com The only issues with this approach is that a majority of the indexed pages exist on the non-www domain and I still have thousands of pages in the results (mainly from the non-www). Is there another way to do it in Google? OR is there a server admin online tool that will tell me this information? Cheers, Dan

Losing Rank As A Result Of Domain Change
I have a client who is wishing to switch from an established, but unattractive domain, to a domain he just purchased that is more attractive. For example purposes, his existing site is "His-Company-Website.com" and the site he just purchased and wants to transfer to is "HisCompanyWebsite.com." The only difference is the old site has hyphens in between the words and the new one does not. He is not making this choice from an SEO perspective, but more of a "I don't want to keep saying all those hyphens when telling people about my website." But he said he doesn't want to lose his search engine rankings as a result. So he knows this won't necessarily increase his ranks, but doesn't want them to drop as a result. When speaking with him, I thought we could simply toss in a 301 redirect at the root level and pipe them over to the other site, but he wanted some actual proof. I went back to look at what I thought would be a similar case that I did earlier in the year (transferring from a .net to a .com) and noticed that we did see some rather substantial drops in at least traffic, so I am not so sure about this plan any longer. So my questions for my far more insightful colleagues... What would be your suggestion on this problem? Transition to the more user friendly domain or stick with the unfriendly domain? If he does elect to transition to the new domain, what all can I do to preserve his search engine rankings? Should a rankings and/or traffic drop be predicting when completing this? Thank you all in advance. Any other tidbits anyone has to offer would be great. Looking forward to your replies.
