Thousands of 301 redirections - .htaccess alternatives?
-
Hi guys,
I just want to ask if there are other possible issues/problems (other than server load) once we implement 301 redirections for 10,000+ URLs using .htaccess. Are there other alternatives?
-
Thank you for your answer ! I will share it with our IT team.
-
Why don't you just have a VPS server with NGINX the stream handler/reverse proxy for your IIS web server?
- http://www.iborgelt.com/windows-home-server-behind-nginx-reverse-proxy/
You're just using the VPS as an interface to handle your redirects and for $5 a month. You can't beat it. Im sure if your IT department googles: nginx reverse proxy iis they will get the idea.

Hi guys, I have a similar problem, but on IIS7. Our IT department says our 301 redirections file is at it's max size in the webconfig. They could increase the limit, but says it will impact page load speed negatively. What's the impact on page speed of having 5000 to 10000 urls in the rewrite map ?
Also, they're also looking at a solution to look at the redirections only when the site gives a 404, so it would hit 404, then 301, then 200. I am a little scared of this SEO wize. Would it be a problem?
Thanks !

Putting aside server load / config issues, and from the pure SEO point of view.
No, you shouldn't have any major issues with that many 301s. However, what you might find is that depending on the size of your site and the frequency of Googlebots visits that some of these pages take a long time (months) to drop out of the index and be replaced by their newer alternatives. This normally isn't cause for alarm.
In some instances you might end up with pages that now have now links to them (as their parent categories were all redirected also) and so seem to get stuck and never get recrawled by Google to update. In a couple of instances I have had success using XML sitemap files that just include these 'blocked' pages (the old URLs still in the index) to prompt Google to recrawl them.
Also there is Google Webmaster Tools feature to 'crawl as Googlebot' which then prompts you to 'submit to index' which you can use to prompt recrawls on a per-page basis (but you have credits here, so should only be for the more important pages).
Best of luck!

The main benefit of this would be in reducing server load / response time, and potentially in maintainability of the server config.
The most important aspect of this side of thing would be based on how many separate rules you have in your .htaccess file for those 10,000 redirects.

Hi Kevin,
What's the difference of this method to the standard 301 redirection using .htaccess?
-
Do you guys have a step-by-step guide in implementing 301 redirection using this httpd main server config file?
-
Well, if you're on a VPS/Dedicated Machine. - I would take a look at http://httpd.apache.org/docs/current/rewrite/rewritemap.html
RewriteMap has 0 effect on the load time like if you were to have the same in .htaccess it will eat those redirect rules. Remember 301s cache in the browser so when you're testing have them all 302s until you're happy and then watch your rewrite log when you launch. If you need help let us know.
This does take some knowhow and learning but you should be able to get this done in a few days. ( testing, reading documentation )
-
Do you have access to the httpd main server config file? If so, please read Apache HTTP Server Tutorial: .htaccess files.
".htaccess files should be used in a case where the content providers need to make configuration changes to the server on a per-directory basis, but do not have root access on the server system. In the event that the server administrator is not willing to make frequent configuration changes, it might be desirable to permit individual users to make these changes in .htaccess files for themselves. This is particularly true, for example, in cases where ISPs are hosting multiple user sites on a single machine, and want their users to be able to alter their configuration.
However, in general, use of .htaccess files should be avoided when possible. Any configuration that you would consider putting in a .htaccess file, can just as effectively be made in a <directory>section in your main server configuration file."</directory>

Inbound Links - Redirect, Leave Alone, etc
Hi, I recently download the inbound links report for my client to look for some opportunities. When they switched to our platform a couple years ago, the format of some of their webpages change, so a number of these inbound links are going to an error page and should be redirected. However, some of these are spammy. In that case, someone recommended to me to disavow them but still redirect anyway. In other cases, some were "last seen" a year or two ago, so when I try to go to the URL the link is coming from, I also get an error page. Should I bother to redirect in these cases? Should I disavow in both cases? Or leave them alone? Thanks for any input!

How to 301 redirect from old domain and their pages to new domain and pages?
Hi i am a real newbie to this and i hope for a guide on how to do this. I seen a few moz post and is quiet confusing hopefully somebody able to explain it in layman terms to me. I would like to 301 redirect this way, both website contain the same niche. oldwebsite.com > newwebsite.com and also its pages..... oldwebsite.com/test >newwebsite.com/test So my question here is i would like to host my old domain and its pages in my new website hosting in order to redirect to my new domain and its pages how do i do that? would my previous page link overwrite my new page link? or it add on the juice link? Do i need to host the whole old domain website into my new hosting in order to redirect the old pages? really confusing here, thanks!

Site that's 301 redirected is ranking for brand
We own a number of foreign TLD domains for our brand. They are all 301-redirected to our main .com branded domain. One of them is appearing in our branded search results, outranking out main .com page. To be clear, this is despite there being a 301 redirect from it to the .com page. Any ideas on what is going on here?

Problems in 301 redirections
Hi guys, I just redirected the following URLs to one landing page (under a new domain): Old URLs http://www.olddomain.com/folder/page/1 http://www.olddomain.com/folder/page/2 http://www.olddomain.com/folder/page/3 http://www.olddomain.com/folder/page/4 http://www.olddomain.com/folder/page/5 http://www.olddomain.com/folder/page/6 New URL http://www.newdomain.com/new-folder/new-page Here's the code in .htaccess that I'm currently using: RedirectMatch 301 /folder/page/(.*) http://www.newdomain.com/new-folder/new-page The redirection rules are working well but the landing pages are showing special parameters like the following: http://www.olddomain.com/folder/page/1 TO http://www.newdomain/new-folder/new-page?cmd=divisionsMain&group=2&country=1&category=1&page=1 http://www.olddomain.com/folder/page/2 TO http://www.newdomain/new-folder/new-page?cmd=divisionsMain&group=2&country=1&category=1&page=2 http://www.olddomain.com/folder/page/3 TO http://www.newdomain/new-folder/new-page?cmd=divisionsMain&group=2&country=1&category=1&page=3 http://www.olddomain.com/folder/page/4 TO http://www.newdomain/new-folder/new-page?cmd=divisionsMain&group=2&country=1&category=1&page=4 http://www.olddomain.com/folder/page/5 TO http://www.newdomain/new-folder/new-page?cmd=divisionsMain&group=2&country=1&category=1&page=5 http://www.olddomain.com/folder/page/6 TO http://www.newdomain/new-folder/new-page?cmd=divisionsMain&group=2&country=1&category=1&page=6 Here's what my .htaccess file look like: Options +FollowSymLinks

Redirecting old domains for SEO ranking?
It's been a while since I read anything seriously out of the box on SEO but I thought I would see what others thought of the bold assertions made in this article. Most of it revolves around buying expired domains and using a 301 to point them, and their juice, to new sites. This guy makes a living doing this so he has to know a bit more than the average Joe but I'm wondering where the other shoe is and when it drops.

ok, i have a website (website A) which has been running since 2008, done very nicely in search results, until january of this year... it dropped siginificantly, losing about two thirds of visitors etc... then in may basically lost the rest... i was pulling my hair out for months trying to figure out why, i "think" it was something to do with links and anchor text, i got rid of old SEO company, got a new SEO company, they have done link analysis, trying to remove lots of links, have dissavowed about 500 domains... put in a reconsideration request... got a reply saying there is no manual penalty... so new seo company says all they can do is carry on removing links, and wait for penguin to update and hopefully that will fix it... this will take as along as it takes penguin to update again... obviously i can not wait indefinetely, so they have advised i start a new website (website B)... which is a complete duplicate of website A. Now as we do not know whats wrong with website A - (we think its links - and will get them removed) my seo company said we cant do a 301 redirect, as we will just cause what ever is wrong to pass over to website B... so we need to create a blank page for every single page at website A, saying we have moved and put a NO FOLLOW link to the new page on website B.... Personally i think the above will look terrible, and not be a very user friendly experience - but my seo company says it is the only way to do it... before i do it, i just wanted to check with some experts here, if this is right? please advise if 301 redirects are NOT correct way to do this. thanks

302 redirects - redirecting numerous domains into main primary domain
302 Redirects - We are a digital agency carrying out some SEO analysis for a potential client. The client has bought over 150 different domains and redirected (302) them into his main domain. The domains were bought up based on relevant industry keywords and protection. On first instance this seems like a Black hat technique that Google would most definitely punish - buying up domains and redirecting them to main website. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks...
