Help with a Sticky Site
-
Hey Everyone -
I work for a company that is just getting into SEO. We have had some successes, but one project lately has got us stumped. We have been working hard, but have been unable to make an impact in Google rankings with the following site:
http://stoneycreekinn.com/locations/index.cfm/DesMoines
We are trying to optimize for the keyword phrase, "des moines hotel"
This hotel is a branch location of a hotel chain in the Midwest.
*Note we've already moved up some other branch locations for this hotel chain successfully.
We've used several tools including the SEOmoz tool and seem to have higher marks than those sites that rank above us in Google surprisingly.
Any idea what we're missing?
Thanks!

It all really depends I guess. Is Johnston a city or suburban community? If I sent something to your address and put Des Moines on it, would it arrive?
How many people search for hotels in Johnston versus Des Moines?
Either one you choose, you'll have to get everything to match.

Thanks for the suggestions! Like I said we are just getting our feet wet with SEO so anything is helpful at this point. One point of frustration for us is the fact that this hotel's actual physical location is in a suburb of Des Moines. So I know there are links out there that list the address as Johnston, IA (the suburb and actual location) and those that list the address as Des Moines, IA. We have tried to convert everything to Des Moines address knowing that consistency is key in search engine ranking, but some directories are smart and can tell the actual location is not Des Moines. Any suggestions here? Should we just list the address as Johnston and optimize the content to include Des Moines as a keyword?

This is only a cursory look so it's only going to touch on some of the most obvious, important factors.
1. Just because we can get rankings for some pages does not automatically mean we'll get them for others. Each phrase set needs to be evaluated as a unique topical focus, in it's own competitive landscape.
2. While your site architecture might work for the locations you've got ranking for, it's upside down site architecture.
You have
http://stoneycreekinn.com/locations/index.cfm/DesMoines
http://stoneycreekinn.com/locations/rooms/index.cfm/DesMoines
http://stoneycreekinn.com/locations/amenities/index.cfm/DesMoines
http://stoneycreekinn.com/locations/gallery/index.cfm/DesMoines
etc.
Ideal site architecture would be something like:
http://stoneycreekinn.com/locations/DesMoines/
http://stoneycreekinn.com/locations/DesMoines/rooms/
http://stoneycreekinn.com/locations/DesMoines/amenities/
etc.
This method helps search engines understand content relationships much more clearly.
3. When drilling down into Packages and Specials, clicking on an individual special goes to
http://stoneycreekinn.com/locations/specials/view.cfm?locationid=6&specialid=4
This page has no Des Moines topical emphasis (page Title, URL, content, etc.) So this entire section is lacking in its ability to be recognized as relevant, and in turn, can not properly support the larger Des Moines focus.
4. OpenSiteExplorer.org only shows 20 links pointing to the top level Des Moines page. From 2 domains. That's hardly any indication that this is an authoritative set of content for an inner section of a site
5. The photo gallery has no descriptive paragraph based text, and no Des Moines specific seeding (title, URL, content area, etc...
Any of these will help, however you may need all of them, to get significant rankings.

While Des Moines may not be a metropolis, I'd imagine that the keyword "hotel" and city modifier is competitive in any/every market. It may not be New York or Las Vegas, but well established sites who have spent a bit of time optimizing their sites would have a leg up. In addition, the larger chains with their 1000's of backlinks and power PR's would also be tough to get ahead of.
The listing/description is lacking, as there is not much information on the page you are trying to optimize for. This could be greatly improved with better copy speaking about Des Moines, the attractions, location, and that specific hotel.
Backlnks are a must, and my analysis would revolve around that, including where the higher ranking competition is listed. You need to be there too. In the meantime start building them in reputable directories.
Make SURE that your name, address, and phone number are EXACTLY the same everywhere in all of your listings. Not having this together can create serious problems.
Make sure you are registered properly in the local search engine areas: Google Place, Bing Local, Yahoo Local.

Teaser Content Help!!
I'm in the process of a redesign and upgrade to Drupal 8 and have used Drupal's taxonomy feature to add a fairly large database of Points of Interest, Services etc. initially this was just for a Map/Filter for site users. The developer also wants to use teasers from these content types (such as a scenic vista description) as a way to display the content on relevant pages (such as the scenic vistas page, as well as other relevant pages). Along with the content it shows GPS coordinates and icons related to the description. In short, it looks cool, can be used in multiple relevant locations and creates a great UX. However, many of these teasers would basically be pieces of content from pages with a lot of SEO value, like descriptive paragraphs about scenic viewpoints from the scenic viewpoints page. Below is an example of how the descriptions of the scenic viewpoints would be displayed on the scenic viewpoints pages, as well as other potential relevant pages. HOW WILL THIS AFFECT THE SEO VALUE OF THE CONTENT?? Thanks in advance for any help, I can't find an answer anywhere. About 250 words worth of content about a scenic vista. There’s about 8 scenic vista descriptions like this from the scenic vistas page, so a good chunk of valuable content. There are numerous long form content pages like this that have descriptions and information about sites and points of interest that don't warrant having their own page. For more specific content with a dedicated page, I can just the the intro paragraph as a teaser and link to that specific page of content. Not sure what to do here.

Ajax tabs on site
Hello, On a webpage I have multiple tabs, each with their own specific content. Now these AJAX/JS tabs, if Google only finds the first tab when the page loads the content would be too thin. What do you suggest as an implementation? With Google being able to crawl and render more JS nowadays, but they deprecated AJAX crawling a while back. I was maybe thinking of doing a following implementation where when JS is disabled, the tabs collapse under each other with the content showing. With JS enabled then they render as tabs. This is usually quite a common implementation for tabbed content plugins on Wordpress as well. Also, Google had commented about that hidden/expandable content would count much less, even with the above JS fix. Look forward to your thoughts on this. Thanks, Conrad

Support docs on a separate site?
Hello, A client has a large ecommerce site (www.mydomain.com) for technical products that require a number of technical documents. Most of these are PDFs, some 3D PDFs drawings and renderings - all good for indexing. We are considering 2 possibilities for these: 1 - a separate site (www.mydomain2.com or docs.mydomain.com), catalog style (probably wordpress) to store the files, with links from product pages at (www.mydomain.com) to the relevant PDFs. This will be much easier to maintain than the second possibility. 2 - storing the files at www.mydomain.com (in /docs/ folder, for example) with links from the product pages to the relevant PDFs. Is there an advantage one way or the other? Thank you

How is my 301 redirected site stealing rankings from the main site?
Hello, I have a site, drhobelt.com, that 301 redirects to the main site, drhonow.com. Not only is drhobelt.com still indexed, but it recently stole rankings from drhonow.com for "decompression belt" related terms. What could be causing this? How do I reclaim the rankings for drhonow.com? Thanks for reading!!

One platform, multiple niche sites: Worth $60/mo so each site has different class C?
Howdy all, The short of it is that I currently run a very niche business directory/review website and am in the process of expanding the system to support running multiple sites out of the same database/codebase. In a normal setup I'd just run all the sites off of the same server with all of them sharing a single IP address, but thanks to the wonders of the cloud, it would be fairly simple for me to run each site on it's own server at a cost of about $60/mo/site giving each site a unique IP on a unique c-block (in many cases a unique a-block even.) The ultimate goal here is to leverage the authority I've built up for the one site I currently run to help grow the next site I launch, and repeat the process. The question is: Is the SEO-value that the sites can pass to each other worth the extra cost and management overhead? I've gotten conflicting answers on this topic from multiple people I consider pretty smart so I'd love to know what other people say.
