Does a sub-domain benefit a domain...
-
I have seen some mixed comment as the whether a sub-domain would benefit from the authority built up by its domain... but does a domain benefit from a sub-domain?
-
I have heard conflicting things from people at Google, including Matt Cutts, throughout the years. I have also seen some first-hand anecdotal evidence that subdomains inherit some benefit from the parent domain, though much less evidence that parent domains gain anything from the subdomains.
It is my opinion that the devil is in the details here. If, for instance, you have a site with dramatically different topics on various subdomains, as if they were completely different websites, I think it is more likely that Google will treat them as such. However, if you have a site with a subdomain for a certain section, such as a forum or blog that is of the same, or very similar topic, with lots of interlinking between the two - as if they were different parts of the same site - I think it is more likely that Google will treat them as such.
So I don't think the answer is as cut-and-dry as people often like to think, which is why it is so difficult to find consistent proof of one theory or the other.
In the end, do what's best for your users and developers. Most of the time that means a subdirectory, but every once in awhile it means a subdomain.
I'll leave this open for other opinions. Maybe someone has some empirical proof that we can look at.

Back in 2007 Matt Cutts announced at Pubcon that sub-domains and folders were to be treated the same. Of course, that didn't exactly happen as it was supposed to but the principle is sound. If what you're worried about is how weight is passing then it's pretty much a level field where you're left to chose the one that makes the most sense for your backend. I personally tend to lean on sub-directories whenever possible for predictability and simplicity.
I will note that I have quite recently seen penalties against a sub-domain on a large-scale site affect the rankings on the domain as a whole so there's definitely crossover in domain authority and trust.
The quickest answer to your question is, yes the domain will benefit from the sub-domain. But it's probably still easier to use a folder.

From everything I have read, a sub domain is treated as an entirely different website. So there is no good reason, as far as seo, to have a subdomain unless you simply want to separate your site info. However, keep in mind that all search data is separate.

Moving content to a new domain
I need to move a lot of content with podcasts and show notes to a new domain. Instead of doing redirects, we want to keep some content on the current domain to retain the link value. There are business reason to keep content on both websites but the new website will primarily be used for SEO moving forward. If we keep the audio portion of the podcast on the old website and move the show notes and the audio portion of the podcast to the new website, is there any issues with duplicate content?Long-term, I presume Google will re-index the old and the new pages, thus no duplicate content, but I want to make sure I'm not missing anything. I was planning to fetch pages in Search Console as we migrate content. Thanks for your help!

Geo Targeting a Country Domain
Hey Mozzers A customer of mine hosts an international web shop on a country domain (customer.ch) which is automatically targeted to 'Switzerland' by the Google Search Console. So far so good, the shops for Switzerland are all in a subfolders /ch/. However, there are 2 more shops in two more subfolders: /de/ (for Germany) and /row/ (for the rest of the world). Google thinks both /row/ and /de/ are Swiss shops which results in searchers on Google.ch currently getting /row/ with the wrong currency and language pair. Question: I can't set the targeting for customer.ch/de/ in the search console to Germany, it's set by the domain country to Switzerand. Also, the customer doesn't own customer.de. How can I still let Google know that customer.ch/de/ is the shop to be displayed only to searchers from Germany, but not to searchers from Switzerland? Thx!

Domain Change -- Drop in Rank
So I had a client that recently decided to change their URL to make it more "searchable"/shorter. Since doing so, I have noticed a significant drop in rankings for a number of the keyword terms we were previously ranking for. Is there a way to push the links to the new URL or is the only solution to revert back to the old URL?

Purchasing a domain to redirect to a new domain (note same industry) - Black hat or White hat technique?
Hi Everyone, Ok so here is my question. I have a client who sells gourmet tea and gourmet spices. She has a culinary blog. There is a culinary blog that just posted that the website will be shut down in the near future. It has 100% white hat links. Would it be considered black hat to buy the domain and redirect it to my clients blog which is also a culinary blog? I would really like to ask Matt Cutts this question. Does anyone know how to send him questions? Thanks Carla

Multiple domains on the same hosting
Hello, I have around 80 sites (different domains) which are on the same host. Everytime I look up the IP of these domains, it gives me the same IP. The sites are interlinked, all linking to the main domain. My question is: Does the off site link building have effect on the 80 sites?

Geolocation has changed targeted domains, or has it?
I am monitoring two domains; a .com and a .com.au in quite a competitive sector (men's underwear online sales) last month the .com site completely dropped from rankings sight in Google International SERPs but, the .com.au site is actually ranking (quite respectively too) in the International/US Google SERPs. I have no idea how, when or why but it's now been the case for two months. Help please?
