Have Title Tags Changed After Hummingbird?
-
Now that Hummingbird is really looking at longer-tail searches and almost a Q&A style search, should the way we do our title tags change?
Moz still recommends:
Optimal Format
Primary Keyword - Secondary Keyword | Brand Name
or
Brand Name | Primary Keyword and Secondary KeywordBut is this really right anymore after Hummingbird? Should we be more of a Q&A type title tag, while still using our Primary Keyword?
For example: If I am targeting Red Nike Shoes, should my title tag be:
Red Nike Shoes, Nike Shoes | Shoes.com
or now:
We carry the latest Red Nike Shoes | Shoes.com or
Find Red Nike Shoes on sale at shoes.com
What are your thoughts?

Hi Dave
I really don't think the optimisation of Title tags post-Hummingbird changes very much if any at all.
Google continue to use the Title tag (up to about 70 characters) as the link in SERPs and the Title tag is still an important factor for telling both human and search engine visitors what the page is about.
Apart from, perhaps, blog posts, where you might have a longer-tail title that reflects the subject of the post, e.g. "How Google is Changing Long-Tail Search with Efforts Like Hummingbird", a Title tag can be optimised in much the same way as before.
The importance with Hummingbird is focused on Google providing a more intelligent understanding of search requests which might be for a long-tail search request, but the intent of the user's search can still be boiled down to less words.
I recommend reading Ammon Johns recent blog post, "Hummingbird – The Opposite of Long-Tail Search" in which he talks about someone, sat in Denver on his mobile phone searching “Where’s a good place where I can get a pizza?”.
Google's analysis of that search is that they can work out the person is sat in Denver and it will work out that the connection between the words "place" and "pizza" means a restaurant. The short tail result for the intent of that search can be summed up in a Title tag of "Denver Pizza Restaurant".
So you could still use a short Title tag like that and it would work, as long as, of course, other on-page and off-page elements supported the relevancy of the page for the search as did the rest of the website.
Another great blog post recently was Gianluca Fiorelli's "Hummingbird Unleashed". In it he wrote one sentence which I found very helpful for understanding SEO for Hummingbird:
"We should stop focusing only on keyword optimization and start thinking about topical optimization."
I hope that helps,
Peter

H tags and Topics
Hello, When google is looking for topics does it combine all the H tags or does it look at H tag after H tag For example let's imagine I have an H2 and under that H2 I have 5 H3. To find the topic(s) of my page does it look at each H3 separtly and says H3 number 1 has this topic, h3 number 2 has this topic and so on or does it take all the content within the 5 H3 to find the topic of the H2 ? Thank you,

Importance of City in Title?
Anyone doing SEO for a local business ever tried to do an A/B test between city name in title and not in title? Seems that if you have a Google Places for Business Listing and have correct NAP on your web pages, Google places heavy importance already on that when determining geographic relevance in their algo. As a business expands, maybe not that far from their original service area but starts to offer services in other nearby cities some of which may be as big of a population as the city the business is located in, it seems to make less and less sense to put city names in the title if not for the basic reason of making the title too long. But what if your primary area is basically three cities and including them pushed your title to say, 90 characters. How much does city name in the title tag matter when you are already coming up the local 3-pack map listing on search results for the relevant cities?

Example: site.com/2007/02/02/my-post/ Do you guys think is it worth the risk of changing my url escructure to remove the date ? Ofcourse I would do the 301 redirects and such... What I want to know if this will have any significant SEO advantage considering Google evolved so much ?

How to add Canonical Tags on Opencart Products
Does anyone know how to add canonical tags to product pages in Opencart? Is this possible to do in htaccess? If so, how specifically should it be written in? Please do not post any links to other pages which reference generic canonical information as I've read them all and none help. I'm looking for an Opencart specific answer, or a way to do it in htaccess.

Are Special Characters and Phone no. in Title Tag bad for Rankings? thank u
Hello. In my two sites painterdublin.com and tilers-dublin.com I am using a special characters in my title and meta description tags. My sites got penalized on 28.9.2012 and apart from other problems I got advice here on seomoz to remove those characters from tags.

Is it really harmful? Title1: • Painter and Decorator in Dublin needed? Painting Contractor?
Description1: • Top quality Painting Contractor, Painter and Decorator based in Lucan, Dublin. online quotation system ✔ pictures of work ✔ customer testimonials ✔ painting tips ✔ Title2: • Tilers Dublin • Tiling Contractors Dublin • 0851390232
Description2: • Top rated Tilers Dublin • Peter & Gavin Tiling Contractors Dublin • Customer reviews ✔ price calculator ✔ project pictures ✔ tiling tips ✔ Of course I am using those symbols and phone number to stand out and be more visible in the search results, but if it is bad for seo, its probably not worth it. what do you think? thank you Jaro0 -
Domain Name Change - Best Practices?
Good day guys, We got a restaurant that is changing its name and domain. However they are keeping the same server location, same content and same pages (we are just changing the logo on the website). It just has to go a new domain. We don't want to lose the value of the current site, and we want to avoid any duplicate penalties. Could you please advise of the best practices of doing a domain name change? Thank you.
