Purchasing a domain to redirect to a new domain (note same industry) - Black hat or White hat technique?
-
Hi Everyone,
Ok so here is my question. I have a client who sells gourmet tea and gourmet spices. She has a culinary blog. There is a culinary blog that just posted that the website will be shut down in the near future. It has 100% white hat links. Would it be considered black hat to buy the domain and redirect it to my clients blog which is also a culinary blog? I would really like to ask Matt Cutts this question. Does anyone know how to send him questions?
Thanks
Carla

Thanks everyone! I feel so much more secure about going after this same industry domain. I agree it is good business.
Thanks

There wouldn't be any problem with buying the domain and the blog, moving the content from it page by page to your domain and redirecting each url on the other blog to the new url where the content can then be found on your domain. It's a fairly normal thing to do when companies merge, get bought, change domains, or go out of business. There's nothing black hat about that--it's just good business.

I agree with Mike and like to add that its only black hat if your sites are not related.

This makes me want to tell the story of Maille Ohye of Google talking about Canonicals at SMX East 2012. (I really like canonicals and probably talk about them too much on here)
She gave a hypothetical about having a fitness blog and taking over Matt Cutts fitness blog. Where canonicals came in was that she stated one of the primary uses for a cross-domain canonical was in passing equity from one site to the other site that will eventually be replacing it without causing confusion for users. So in the hypothetical she took over Matt Cutts' fitness blog, placed canonicals from his pages to their relevant counterpart on her site, moved content over as necessary, and placed a notice on the homepage of the Matt Cutts blog that it was going away but will be rolled into the Maille Ohye blog. This gives people enough time to switch over their bookmarks without bouncing from being redirected to somewhere they didn't expect. The canonicals would move equity to the main site, eventually pages would begin swapping out in the index, and eventually you would 301 redirect everything to their relevant counterparts on the main site once enough time has passed.
Following things that way I would assume that should be considered completely White Hat.

Redirects for new website
Hi Moz community,
Technical SEO | | JSimmons17
I'm a fairly new SEO Specialist with a brand new website. We initially had a very basic holding website until the fully functional website was completed. I have to do some redirects as we have both .html and .php files & we don't want to lose SEO value for specific pages (like the index, news, etc). I also want to redirect from a www url to a non-www url. I am trying to accomplish redirects with the following code: RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.mywebsite.com [NC]
RewriteRule (.*) http://mywebsite.com/$1 [R=301,L] RedirectMatch 301 /index.html (.*).(php|html) http://mywebsite.com/index.php RedirectMatch 301 /cupcakes-slideshow/glutenfree-slideshow.html (.*).(php|html) http://mywebsite.com/gluten-and-glutenfree.php RedirectMatch 301 /press.html (.*).(php|html) http://mywebsite.com/news-and-reviews.php Please let me know if I am on the right track. Thanks so much in advance!0 -
Holy Redirects
Currently working on a project for a medium sized site (http://sleeponcall.com/) but the SEOMoz crawl crawled over 14,000 pages because the report is showing more than 8,000 redirects. The client has no clue how this happened as their previous web programmers may not have been on the ball. What could be causing the problem and what is the best way to untangle this mess?

We have set up 301 redirects for pages from an old domain, but they aren't working and we are having duplicate content problems - Can you help?
We have several old domains. One is http://www.ccisound.com - Our "real" site is http://www.ccisolutions.com The 301 redirect from the old domain to the new domain works. However, the 301-redirects for interior pages, like: http://www.ccisolund.com/StoreFront/category/cd-duplicators do not work. This URL should redirect to http://www.ccisolutions.com/StoreFront/category/cd-duplicators but as you can see it does not. Our IT director supplied me with this code from the HT Access file in hopes that someone can help point us in the right direction and suggest how we might fix the problem: RewriteCond%{HTTP_HOST} ccisound.com$ [NC] RewriteRule^(.*)$ http://www.ccisolutions.com/$1 [R=301,L] Any ideas on why the 301 redirect isn't happening? Thanks all!

301 for old domain to new domain - Joomla plugin or cpanel?
A client changed domains and both are being indexed. There are thousands of content pages. I can install a 301 redirect Joomla plugin and configure it so that each page redirects to the new domain. I have a feeling I will need to manual set every page. OR I can create a domain level redirect setting in cpanel using wildcards. I think this will automatically pass every old URL to the new URL. Which is the better approach? The cpanel option sounds like less work.

Redirecting an Old Domain
One of my clients has a newish e-commerce website that was just redesigned. Part of this new marketing push is shutting down an old yahoo store. The problem is that this old store's domain has a 10 year old link in DMoz and is there fore in about 200 other directories. Is pointing that old domain at the new website going to be enough to keep all of that link juice flowing?

301 redirects and old domain names
Thanks to the great advice i've received on this forum, I'm combining 50 different truck sites into a single, ultimate truck website. So my question is how long should I make a website 301 redirect to the appropriate page on my new website? My thought is that if it works well to have a single website, it might be nice to eventually sell off some of the old domain names that I won't be using anymore. Thanks! Andy

Buying a new domain
Hello guys! We are in process of buying a new domain. How can we be sure that this domain is not blacklisted and are there any steps to take in order to be sure that whatever we are buying is actually in "good shape"? Thanks much!

What research needs to be done prior to purchasing an old domain?
I'm planning on purchasing an old domain. I'd like to get an idea whether or not any "shadyness" was going on with the domain over the years. It's still indexed in google. I "whois'd" it, ran it through open site explorer, and did a "link:" search. Anything else you would recommend for researching this domain?
