Backlinks & local search?
-
I'm aware that local search is mostly based on citations, and how well your Google places page is optimized, and the landing pages are optimized. But I was wondering if anyone could tell me if backlinks have any relevance in the local search results? And if they do, how much would you say the impact the local search results? could you estimate a % of total value?
Also if they do, does it help to have backlinks that point at your places page urls? or should the backlinks just point at your places page landing pages?

Thank you. I have been reading the David Mihn stuff it is a great resource!

Hey
I am no expert in local search, but it is one area I am spending some time reading up on and experimenting with at the moment so a lot of this is fresh in my mind.
One of the biggest and best resources around is the David Mihn Local Search Ranking Factors and it has just been updated for 2011: http://www.davidmihm.com/local-search-ranking-factors.shtml
It's similar to the SEOMoz ranking factors in that they survey lots of big brains from local search and come up with the views and experience of many.
Top 10 Factors are as follows:
- Physical Address in City of Search(PLACE PAGE)
- Manually Owner-verified Place Page(PLACE PAGE)
- Proper Category Associations(PLACE PAGE)
- Volume of Traditional Structured Citations (IYPs, Data Aggregators)(OFF-PLACE/OFF-SITE)
- Crawlable Address Matching Place Page Address(WEBSITE)
- PageRank / Authority of Website Homepage / Highest Ranked Page(WEBSITE)
- Quality of Inbound Links to Website(OFF-PLACE/OFF-SITE)
- Crawlable Phone Number Matching Place Page Phone Number(WEBSITE)
- Local Area Code on Place Page(PLACE PAGE)
- City, State in Places Landing Page Title(WEBSITE)
None of which are links to the place page itself.
Basically, links to the place page are not an issue, but the quality of your actual site and the links to it are an issue.
The whole thing is worth a read and if you are looking for a buddy to bounce some local search ideas off, give me a shout back as I am in that head space at the moment.
Cheers
Marcus

How can we boost our rankings in a London-based Google search?
Hi all, I work for enterprise app development & mobile consultancy, Mubaloo. We tend to rank fairly well on Google for our targeted keywords in the Bristol area but not as well in London. Obviously there is more competition in London but that aside, we still don't rank brilliantly. We use our London address as our main address on our website, same for our London telephone number. Both of our offices are submitted to Google Maps and we include blog content with London and Bristol in the headers. Our main HQ is in Bristol but the London office is growing. What are the ways we can improve our rankings from a London-based Google search? Thank you in advance!

How likely it is to rank both locally and organically
I think the question summarizes it pretty well. Did anybody experienced this, to rank for one or multiple keywords in both local and organic search results?

Which Local Listing Should I Delete
I have a client that has two local listings in google for one suburb. My client only has one office in this area. In the below two local listings no information has been completed except for information scraped from the yellow pages by google Option A
Image & Video Optimization | | VivaArturo
One listing has a review that is 8 months old and shows in the blended local search results position A. However the address details are incorrect as info is from an old yellow pages ad. To verify this address it can only be completed by postcard as does not provide a phone number option. Option B
This listing has the correct address as per the yellow pages listing and has been verified and has no reviews. in position I All other competitor local listings are not placed except for one Should I edit Option A's address to update to the current address and delete Option B from the local listings. Verification can be completed by mail only Or should I delete Option A with the incorrect address with one review and keep Option B as has just been verified and can start woking on this listing immediately. I think I should use Option B, as in the 2 weeks I would wait to be verified I could gain more ground with the current listing. What are your thoughts?0 -
Is creating great content not important for Local seo?
I'm helping a friend out with Local SEO/Google Places and his content is lacking - no blog, no articles, etc. I've read the major "How To" guides for Local seo by Andrew Shotland and David Mihm and their ranking factors but I never see anything about content or linkbuilding (aside from directories).

SEO & Mass-Renaming of Images: Image Name, Alt Text, etc.
We are currently in the process of changing all of our image names and their alt-tags to be descriptive of their content. For instance, changing image names from image0001.jpg to blue-cell-phone-cover. We have hundreds of images on our site, would it be best to rename all of the images and update their tags in one sweeping change or trickle the changes, uploading changed images every other day or so?

Local Seo Help!
Hi everyone, Google Places is going to be the death of me. I have asked a few questions on this topic before but nothing seems to work. Here are some of my problems/concerns: It keeps deleting my description!? Have you seen this before? The "more about this place" section has not been updated since I claimed the listing over 3 months ago. The website it lists at the top of that section is our old website address which no longer works. The site was through a site builder and the company will not forward the domain to the new site. Are there any companies or services that can help build a great profile and help increase my rankings? I am starting to think this is over my head. Do I delete the page and start over? Any advice? Please! I really appreciate your help! -Brant
