Should I get a unique IP?
-
I have a couple sites hosted in a VPS that share the same IP.
Should I assign each site a unique IP? Would Google affect my rankings for a sudden IP change?
-
I think that now a days, with many sites using reverse proxies (such as CloudFlare) Google has stopped looking at the IPs as it is no longer a factor to rank sites.
Jeff's point on the e-mail problem is right, however, you can simply host your email on a third party IP, like Google Apps, and never get blocked. Something that even dedicated IPs get the punch.
I have a few dedicated servers, some of them with multiple IP addresses and I found myself trying to clean new IP addresses that just were to new or "abused" by previous owners.
Switching hosting provider, however, while changing the IP address may increase/decrease rankings not because of the IP but most likely because of the site speed, which IS something that Google considers to rank sites.

Jeff's answer is very good.
I just wanted to add that if your sites link to one another, I would highly recommend having separate IPs and even separate hosting accounts if possible. Part of Google's patent on rankings are referring domains and the IPs in which those domains are on. I've personally seen where moving a domain that I own to a different host with a different IP dramatically increased each of the sites rankings. (this may be just correlation and not necessarily causation but it's worked for other people I've worked with too)

While Google usually doesn't have a problem indexing sites with shared IPs, I'd highly recommend each site have it's own IP address.
While it's fine if you're hosting multiple sites on a VPS that share an IP address, long term, you need to worry about things like email blacklisting (if one site starts send out spam) or other issues, too.
I don't think that you'll see any negative implications for rankings if you change the IP address; I'd perhaps set the TTLs in your DNS zone file for the domain down as low as it can go (i.e. 3600 seconds or 1,800 seconds) to prevent users from not seeing the site if they have the older IP address cached on their computer.
Hope this helps...

Why am I getting millions of links from my root domain to my subdomains?
My site's subdomains (us.example.com, de.example.com, etc.) are showing millions of links (in Google Webmaster Tools) from the root domain. This seems very unnatural to me. Any idea what would be cause this or is this? In addition, I just found out that we deliberately stop googlebot crawling GEO-IP redirects, so that when googlebot tries to crawl our UK, DE, FR, etc. sites, it is not redirected to us.example.com. I'm thinking they may be linked? Thanks for your help!

Can't get Google to Index .pdf in wp-content folder
We created an indepth case study/survey for a legal client and can't get Google to crawl the PDF which is hosted on Wordpress in the wp-content folder. It is linked to heavily from nearly all pages of the site by a global sidebar. Am I missing something obvious as to why Google won't crawl this PDF? We can't get much value from it unless it gets indexed. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks! Here is the PDF itself:

Can I Get Penalized for 301 Redirects (Too Many or In Any Scenario)?
A client of ours owns several domain names that are keyword similar to the domain they actually use to run their site. They are asking us if we should 301 redirect all of these websites to the domain they use. However, I don't want this to work against them and their site get penalized later for this. I have heard buying out competitors and redirecting their domain to yours is frowned upon and penalized when you get caught (they did not do this). We are also wondering if there is a limit as to how many domains you can 301 redirect and what type (keyword similar, misspellings, .net's, etc.) and if you are penalized after too many (i.e. >50). All of the domains in question are keyword/brand name similar only and do not exist as actual websites. We just want to do the right thing. Thank you for your help.

Does PR/linkjuice get transfered from directory->subdirectory?
If website.com links to website.com/utilities Does website.com/utilities/business.html pagerank get benefited from this? The reason I ask is, I have the option to have: 1) website.com/utilities/business.html or 2) website.com/utilities-business My boss says would like to keep the first example and link directory to subdirectory --> File. I prefer the second example because the potential traffic in it is a source of revenue and I want it to get linkpower from homepage directly. So, unless linkjuice is transfered horizontally across subdirectories, 2) would be better SEO-wise, is this correct? Thanks a lot.

What is the best method to block a sub-domain, e.g. staging.domain.com/ from getting indexed?
Now that Google considers subdomains as part of the TLD I'm a little leery of testing robots.txt with something like: staging.domain.com
Technical SEO | | fthead9
User-agent: *
Disallow: / in fear it might get the www.domain.com blocked as well. Has anyone had any success using robots.txt to block sub-domains? I know I could add a meta robots tag to the staging.domain.com pages but that would require a lot more work.0 -
Why are my pages getting duplicate content errors?
Studying the Duplicate Page Content report reveals that all (or many) of my pages are getting flagged as having duplicate content because the crawler thinks there are two versions of the same page: http://www.mapsalive.com/Features/audio.aspx http://www.mapsalive.com/Features/Audio.aspx The only difference is the capitalization. We don't have two versions of the page so I don't understand what I'm missing or how to correct this. Anyone have any thoughts for what to look for?
