Is "http://whereisthefold.com/" a good tool?
-
I came across this tool: http://whereisthefold.com/
I would like to add this to my bag of tricks but want to see if anyone has actually taken the time to verify that this tool presents an accurate representation of where things are placed on different screen sizes?
I would appreciate any input.
Ron

I agree with peter, This tool by Google Labs is a better option but the tool you mentioned is also ok!!

Hey Ron,
This is a great question as it has to come into play for designing a site. I think it could be a useful tool, however, it may be an instance of 'shooting yourself in the foot' if you designed the site and important components aren't showing in the top fold.
I personally wouldn't use this tool, nor share with a client for a couple reasons.
- We can't control a users' screen resolution. I personally use a laptop with 2 23in wide screen HD monitors split from it. 3 screens in total. I say this because my 15in laptop top fold is MUCH less than the 23in monitors top fold as all are set to the same screen resolution, by preference. I have had clients call and ask about why their site looks so big or so small when designing and we'd have to do the dance of working with their screens and monitor to get it to the settings which majority of computers users have... you guessed it, factory default. Then the client(s) were pleased and understood. Unfortunately, we wouldn't be able to that for any site visitors. We work to cater to the 80+% out there for design. Which, takes me to my next reason for not using this tool...
- With the recent developing responsive design and parallax design styles, a lot of websites are becoming more visual works of art with pages that do run on in scrolling up/down. To many we talk with, they think it's "pretty cool" both visually and that you can display information and content more effectively across the Home page and inner pages. We still do strongly recommend having all the important components in the top fold always, logo, phone numbers, page headings, breadcrumbs, links to online forms, and navigation bars.
Again, this is just my personal opinion after seeing the tool, then reliving experiences in working with clients on their designs and them asking this question about "top fold" display. Nonetheless, thanks for sharing as I'm sure others in the Moz community may find use in it and bookmark it for their bag of tricks also
Cheers! - Patrick

Hi Ron
It looks OK. However, you might find http://browsersize.googlelabs.com/ more useful though with details of how to use it here: http://browsersize.googlelabs.com/static/about-browser-size.html
Google said it was going to be retired in June last year but it's still going, probably because people do find it useful.
I hope that helps,
Peter

What are the best practices for server-side A/B testing?
When performing a full-site server-side A/B test, what best practices should you follow to ensure that you're: not cloaking or at least not being shady only showing Google (and other search engines) the version you want them to see (i.e. not the test pages) Thanks in advance!

Any possibility to track goal completions/conversions at a sub-page (non-landing page) level in Google Analytics?
We’re promoting our sub-page it's http://www.flightcentre.ca/flights/london on our homepage under the slideshow so I need to see how many people went to the homepage, then went to this page, and then converted (enquired or booked.) What I can’t see is how many people did that. I know how to look up how many people landed on that page and then converted, but I need to know how many people navigated there and then converted. Is that possible? I can only see Goal Completions if I look at that page as a landing page, but that only presents a very slim view of the total visits when compared to those pages generally. Any way to check the entire behavior or activities happening through this page i.e. /flights/london?

Is putting an email address in the page title a good idea?
As our Contact Us page title was a little short I added in sales@example.com So "Contact us : Sales@example.com" We don't get a lot of spam and it hasn't noticeable increased since we did this. Tynt suggests that a reasonable number of people have copied and pasted the email - presumably to contact us Is it worth experimenting with further or a waste of time?

Optimising /product/ pages for our 15,000 product ecommerce store.
Hi guys! We're constantly working on evolving our /product/ pages on the site, however some times it's pretty easy to get lost in your own mess. Especially when the sites consists of 15,000+ products. So it's pretty painful to handcraft every single page. So I thought I'd jump in here to see if anyone had any suggestions for stuff we're missing, and or should improve? These are product pages: http://www.warcom.com.au/products/9954_draytek-vigor-120-single-port-adsl-122-modem http://www.warcom.com.au/products/49884_warcom-deluxe-double-lcd-monitor-stand---free-shipping There is a few issues we're aware of already.. Negatives: To many links in the left menus. To many links in the footer. Positives: We recently included rich snippets.. We're always testing out colors and styles. We're always testing meta data. Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Checkout abandonment fix w/ Shopify?
Hey everybody. I run a digital product site on Shopify. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with on page fixes for checkout abandonment? On my site... 31% of people add to cart & never get to checkout. 66% of people reaching checkout abandon their checkouts. Obviously a lot of sales are flying out the window. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Tips on marketing actual "Products" rather than "SEO Advice"?
First of all I just want to say that I love SEOMoz, it's by far the best no-BS resource for SEO and online marketing information in general on the entire Internet, and well worth the money. HOWEVER, one beef I am starting to have with it recently is... Most of the content being generated is becoming about "how to market to marketers" or "selling SEO" rather than actual advice or focus selling general products or services. By this I mean that all the new trends towards pumping out content based on research, making fancy infographics etc. etc. are all well and good for those who are trying to market their marketing or SEO talents in general but not THAT applicable to traditional online storefronts. I work for a fairly large company that sells tickets for theme parks/attractions/tours etc. and SEOMoz was a huge help initially for a recent site redesign, but now every time I log on to check for fresh content it's seemingly a repeat similar advice on how to get links or traffic for an SEO business. I don't mean this to come off as a whine because as I said SEOMoz is wonderful, but I've conducted endless site searches for (recent) information on traditional online marketing etc. and the ratio just seems to be...off. Anyone else feeling this way?

Hello, I know you can add rel="author" to blog posts but has anyone tried adding them to normal pages? Does it work? Does it improve CTR? Thanks, Scott
