Sometime I just don't get Google rankings
-
We currently rate #10 on google.com.au on Modern Cloth Nappies and the #4 site is a dead link to a page http://www.modernclothnappies.org/ who's total content is:
Index of /

Apache Server at www.modernclothnappies.org Port 80

They have been at that rank for a quiet a while and even the cached version is full of broken links.

It seems Google is quick to jump on low value sites or ones with duplicate content, but what about stale links and sites? Has anyone else had similar experiences of being out ranked by domant or dead sites?

Thank you for sharing Sha. I find this very interesting.
I trust the information Matt shares, but I also wonder if he might think the forums work better then they actually do in this case.

Hi Ryan,
This has been mentioned a few times in the Google Webmaster help videos by Matt Cutts. This Google Webmaster Help Video on fixing incorrect results in the SERPs is one of them.
Hope it helps.

Thanks for that info. I will look at that option.

Hi Sha.
Can you please reference any article from Google which suggests sharing the bad result screenshot in Google Help forums?
I have repeatedly seen the opposite advice. The Google help forums either educate posters on how the system works, or will advise posters to use the existing tools. I am not aware of any case in the past year where a staff member replied to a post and said "I'll ask the team to take a look at it". It seems to be a mostly community run forums with relatively few replies from Google employees.

Hi There Oznappies,
Hope its warmer in your little spot in Oz than down here on Kangaroo Island!
Google has a team of people who work on developing algorithms to find this according to Matt Cutts who talks about these crypto 404's in the linked webmaster help video.
I have also seen Matt mention in a number of other webmaster help videos that if you see something that is just plain wrong when sites are returned in Google SERP's that the quickest way to deal with it is to grab good screenshots (of the SERP and where it takes you) and then post the problem in Webmaster Central Help pages. By doing this it will be seen by either Google staff or moderators who can escalate the issue to get it dealt with.
This is prob your best option. Buying the domain won't guarantee that you keep the ranking - eventually it would get dropped anyway and/or you would have to put content on it, optimize and build links etc.
-
You could try reaching out to them and buy the domain.

Google will remove the site, but it will take longer then any of us like.
When Google visits the site, that page returns a 200 response, not a 404. A 404 response tells Google the page is not found, and allows them to take faster action.
I think many of us see this issue every day. There is absolutely nothing we can do except be patient. You know the page will fall off the ranks, and when it does you will be bumped up a position.

The same page ranking twice in the top 10?
Whilst doing a SERP analysis for a particular phrase, i noticed that the same page is ranking twice in the top 10. I've known of the same domain ranking twice with different pages which makes sense but to see the exact same URL ranking twice is a new one for me. Has anyone seen this before too and know of reasons why this would happen?

Why is this site ranking so well
I just took over an SEO campaign for a company we recently did a website for. The old company created individual landing pages for each city they service, but they didn't have any original content except replacing the city name. We are in the process of creating completely unique content per page. My main issue is that there is a company with no link profile, duplicate content on every page, no social media presence, etc - but consistently ranks for city + fence company The company we are starting to work with is: http://betterdecksandfences.com/ The company that is ranking for everything is: http://www.alcovyfence.com Any ideas?

Why would a site with virtually no external links and low authority rank very high?
Hey there: I'm not sure anyone's going to be game to answer this but... I have designed, done on-page optimization for and done ongoing content marketing and linkbuilding for a local fitness site. The site is about nine months old and I am attempting to achieve rank for the keyword "personal trainers in philadelphia." We've made progress; having taken a new site from +100 to 19 in about four or five months worth of content creation and linkbuilding on a very modest budget. I'm not complaining. What has me confused though is that there are one or two sites that are ranking very high for this keyword string with considerably shoddier metrics than our site and I'm wondering how a stock WP theme site with very few inbound links can rank top five for a reasonably competitive keyword? Our site is http://vtrainersinc.com. The site I've noticed that ranks top five and seems to have an inferior SEOMoz profile is bodycrafters.net. Anybody got any ideas as to why these things seem to occur? I have this feeling this site has stumbled upon a magic SEO elixir which I'd like to get my hands on!

solutions to the issue, and I have followed through with them trying to solve
this problem but the results are the same. Beginning in late April our SERP went down drastically. I
have checked and cleaned the website of any errors and issues that I can find with

How come the results in Google vary with domains
Hello, How is everyone doing? My question is about the google search engine results page. How come some results have the www. in front of them and some don't. Also what are the SEO implications of having www. in front of your search results vs. not. Is this something to do with canonical? I have included a screen shot so you will see what I mean. One result is www.gearyi.com and the result without the www is ingenexdigital.com. R6GLL.png

How can a site rank higher when you beat them by A LOT on virtually every SEOMOZ factor?
Any insight into what's driving these results would be appreciated. Another site ranks #6 and we rank #22 on a keyword that scores 67% for "Keyword Difficulty", but we score significantly higher than them on almost every ranking factor including having nearly 10 times more backlinks along with higher PA and DA scores, etc. Here is a comparison from the Keyword Difficulty Tool report. Image only site on top of Google
Hi Everyone, I'm trying to rank in Google for 'Hid xenon' in the netherlands, but there is one site above all results: http://bit.ly/qlsjne As you can see the site almost has no backlinks, and has not a single word in it's content, all images. it's a keyword only domain, and that's probably the only reason why it's ranking that high, but that means then that i can never get higher then him in Google because of it's domainname? Even when it's such a shitty site? Thank you, regards yannick
