Exact Match Anchor Text - How Can These Guys Be Getting Away With It?
-
Hi.
I've noticed that some of my search competitors seem to be getting away with heavy use of exact match anchor text in their backlinks. In the UK, for the term [HR Software] the top 3 SERPs have on average:
- 63% of their backlinking domains using the exact match anchor text [HR Software]
- 50% of their backlinking pages use the exact match anchor text [HR Software]
I know there are hundreds of factors at play other than just the above but to me their anchor text profiles scream "LINK SPAM".
Is this normal? Have I missed something? or do I just bide my time and wait for them to be hit with a penalty?
Thanks
David

How are you checking their backlinks? Keep in mind that even the best link checkers can find only a fraction of the links pointing to a site. It could be that there are more links going to the site that you're not aware of, that Google knows about. Ahrefs has the largest index of links, in my experience.
It's also possible that the site has a lot of other positive signals going to the site. Generally, the more authoritative and trustworthy a site is in Google's eyes, the more it can get away with in terms of spammy tactics without getting penalized.
You also don't know which of those links are helping with the rankings, if any. It's entirely possible that the company has already disavowed most of those links in Webmaster tools, or Google is discounting them automatically. Or maybe they will end up getting penalized in the next Penguin update.
In short, don't rely too much on competitive backlink analysis. It can give you a few ideas of links to go after, but it doesn't always give you the full picture.

Sorry to sound negative but the only thing you have missed is believing that everything you read about Google works
I believe that all these PR releases is where Google wants to go in the future or how they wished things to happen, a white hat online marketing strategy best guide if you'd like. But as to what actually works you will be surprised to find out that a lot of black hat tactics not only work, but actually are good in keeping a site on page one for a long long time.
While this is a strategy that will innevitably lead you to the day you will log to your ranking tool and your whole web site will be gone, bear in mind that Google DID encourage heavy anchor text link building. Few months later they realise that people can abuse it as was greatly noted in this post here http://yoast.com/godaddy-link-building/ where GoDaddy managed to climb on page one overnight back in 2011, not that long ago but before the first Penguin release.
There are a lot of techniques that still work these days, techniques that have been reported black hat ages ago, and that google have made an example of. If they made an example why do they still work you may ask? I am in no position to answer, but they do work. Here is a sum up of 5 reasons you might be getting outranked by a competitor http://www.atladasmedia.co.uk/blog/5-seo-reasons-you-may-be-getting-beat-in-rankings-by-websites-that-are-no-better-than-yours/ one of which is:
- Anchor text link building. YES – Penguin is nasty and there are a lot of web sites that got penalised but anchor text link building does help if done properly. I did a quick search on terms such as the one mentioned above as well as local companies and the top pages have keywords in between six and 15 percent of their anchor texts. This is where a lot of companies that use keyword domain names as shown above, have an advantage, as their domain name can also serve as an anchor text if someone decides to link to them.
Hope this answers your question!

Can't remove and can't disavow...
Wondering if anyone could help me. A client is suffering a Google penalty at the moment which is harming their performance. That said it is properly the best penalty they could have got..the site has a penalty which is stopping them ranking as high on keywords which they have been spamming links for. I say the best penalty they could have got because, other than these keywords, the site is still performing as well as before in the engines. Have been trying to clear up the backlinks for the past couple of months and just when I think im winning I discover some 32,000 blog comments on one domain 6 weeks or so ago!! - [http://www. iimpact.co.uk/blog/about?ss=%25&replytoc&rep&d=http://8;d=http://166",.moveForm("comment-1628", "1628", addComment.m&replytocom=265](http://www.iimpact.co.uk/blog/about?ss=%25&replytoc&rep&d=http://8;d=http://166",.moveForm("comment-1628", "1628", addComment.m&replytocom=265) example url, I broke it on purpose as to not make it a backlink With that many links i will not even try and contact the site, I put in the disavow in google that there is no way I can get these removed and explained it etc, however, they, again, rejected the reconsideration request saying they are still not happy with the links. At a bit of a loss here. It's starting to look that the best approach will be to write off the half a dozen terms and go a little more long tail. The site will not rank for (this is an example as would not want to give the client away) door knockers. They used to be first page but now are page four. However they remain page one for terms such as brass door knockers, cheap door knockers, chrome door knockers etc. In WMT ranking report they have hits from 1200 words ranking in the top 5 in the past 30 days and 3000 in the top ten. Im a considering trying to up the rankings of these words at the expense of the ones which we cannot seem to get the penalty off. Any thoughts please.

What can I do to improve my site's local search ranking?
I've read a lot about the "Magic 7" ranking factors for local search, and I feel like in a lot of ways, my site (www.imageworkscreative.com) is doing all the right things and still not having terrific results. The only thing I can think of to really improve upon is how often our local keywords are mentioned on our pages - maybe setting up a local blog or something similar would be helpful? Adding footers that include the names of local cities? Does anyone have any pointers for me? We would really like to rank for things like dc web design, web design va, etc. - and fast. We have (recent) links from two local Chambers of Commerce and we're working on getting accredited by the BBB. I feel like those listings will help us, but there has to be more we can do.

Ask a QuestionBacklink Anchor Text Profile
I'm looking to clean up my back link profile as we have a Google penalty for unnatural linking. Any pointers on what I should be looking for in terms of what makes a link bad? We have a massive percentage of links under the anchor text of "workwear" and this is the keyword we have the penalty for. Is it better to get the links removed or the anchor text changed? Thanks

Exact match anchor text is negative signal?
Hi all, I am wondering if the exact match anchor text is 100% negative signal after the penguin. I mean even from relevant sites and natural use. During the last 2 weeks I see negative SERP changes and I start to think that it is because exact match keyword anchor text is used. I also use some other anchor texts along with it all the time.. but now I think of using 100% exact match anchor free links. Does anybody have similar observations? Thank you in advance.

Are Guest Post Anchor Text Links Evil?
Hi, In the recent free SEOMoz webinar about What's Ailing the Linkgraph, Rand Fishkin says that corporations try to get anchor text guest posts on his wife's blog and he suggests this is manipulative. Do you agree that anchor text links in guest posts are manipulative? Do you think that Google will take action against this tactic in the future? Thanks!

Ever Get disillusioned with SEO
Many times now we have pushed certain keywords for homepage listings but we have found the traffic levels to be very poor and many cases first page listings turn out to be vanity. The frustrating thing is that sometimes we have to tell some of our SEO customers that in order to get a good market share for there industry they will always have to do google adwords. What are your thoughts on this . Thanks

Getting links - the actual final approach to do so
Hi All, So once you use OSE Tool to point you in the right direction of sites that might be able to give you links, what are the best practices for then reaching out to the website? I get that you need to give value in your request for a link and offer something of value – but what else to think about?? Ie Call them, email them, email who? Follow up with phone call??? Do you just use the standard contact form on their website? Presumably you need to track all this, just do it in a spreadsheet? What do you say in the email? Do you offer them a link (if you can?) I guess it’s a thing that sounds easy enough – go get a link – but I would imagine that people who have done this enough with some success can maybe share some of the things that particularly worked or did not work… At the moment it just seems a daunting / time consuming task - even thinking of getting an intern to help do all this – pros and cons to that as well??? Thanks for your time!
