How do i migrate from Volusion to Magento with the same domain using 301 redirect?
-
We are thinking about migrating our site from Volusion to Magento due to traffic reasons, our site's been growing and we're going way over the bandwidth limit (40gb) for Volusion every month. It only make sense for us to start on Magento CE where we can host it on our site and use our own bandwidth. We will be using the same domain, and changing our URLs to make things better (we were somewhat restricted by Volusion so we couldn't optimize some of our URL addresses). Here's comes the main question, since we are ranking pretty good for the keywords that we're targeting, we ABSOLUTELY DON'T want to lose any traffic or ranking from our pages, I know that there's something called the 301 redirect that we can use, but how can this be done? When we migrate the site, we will need to point our domain to Magento from Volusion, so basically Volusion store will be down... if we are changing domain names then the 301 redirect makes sense because we can have the original store live while it's redirecting to a completely new address. Is there any method to still setup this 301 redirect, or is there something else I can do to save our rankings??? Thanks in advance!

Hi Kevin;
You should use Volusion to Magento migration tool from Litextension to get your job done. This tool supports migration full data including URLs from Volusion to Magento and you wont lost your search ranking. I think Litextension provides the best solution to keep old urls after change to Magento, you can read their solution at this blog post.

Thank you so much Dana, I am actually a partner of this company so I will not get fired, but it WILL HURT US A LOT if I don't manage this right. As you can see I'm already planning from getting answers and seeking others experiences so I'm able to do the best I can. There's actually a lot we can do during the dip, as we already bring in a lot of traffic from our weekly newsletter and we are very active on our social network too, and our most searches online is actually our brand so I'm pretty sure people will be able to find us, and of course there are other things we can do like adwords to get more traffic in. This change is all for the better, or else why would we consider migrating? We have many plans to implement onto the new site, but this dip will make us re-evaluate all the potential benefits vs potential down falls, maybe we'll need to save up more capital just to prepare for this and set a new time. Thanks!

Hi Kevin,
I responded to your more recent question about 301 redirects, but I thought I would share some thoughts here too as well. I hope you find this helpful.
If you will be managing this transition (or to whomever will be held accountable for whether it was successful or not), part of what you need to start doing right now is managing expectations. To embark on this project and having someone (the owner, the CEO, your boss, whomever) hold you to the expectation that you will not lose any rankings or traffic as a result of this transition may be a recipe to get you fired. Part of what you need to do right now is beginning managing those expectations. I am not saying this because I don't think you will do a good job, I am saying this because, speaking from a lot of experience and studying what happens to sites when they migrate, replatform, rebrand, or all of the above, you must be prepared for a period of time when your rankings and traffic drop. They might even drop significantly. You need to have a plan in place for how you are going to deal with the business ramifications of that (decrease in revenue, etc). Are you going to rely on paid search to boost things up for a while? Print advertising? You need to plan for this.
Now, on the rosier side, if you do a really good job, hopefully after you power through the post-replatform dip, things swing up on the other side and become better than they were before. I have also seen this happen. Although I'm not at liberty to say which one, one of the major search engines replatformed and rebranded their News site and experience a significant dip for several months, but then powered through that and increased traffic by 80% after enduring the drop. So, in the end, they were better off.
While there are probably some folks here who may have witnessed a replatform with no impact on traffic and rankings, I myself have never seen this. I think it's important for you to make it clear to stakeholders that there will be a period of decline that could be as short as a few weeks, as long as a year and, yes, perhaps permanent. There are many things to consider other than just the URLs...i.e. does the replatform cause your bounce rate to skyrocket, which possibly could impact your rankings? And about 1,000 other things. How well all of that is managed will significantly impact how successfully you bounce back from the project.
Good luck to you. I feel your pain! But replatforms are inevitable and hopefully for you they will lead your business to much success!
Dana

Redirecting a Few URLs to a New Domain
We are in the process of buying the blog section of a site. Let's say Site A is buying Site B. We have taken the content from Site B and replicated it on Site A, along with the exact url besides the TLD. We then issued 301 redirects from Site B to Site A and initiated a crawl on those original Site B urls so Google would understand they are now redirecting to Site A. The new urls for Site A, with the same content are now showing up in Google's index if we do a site:SiteA.com search on the big G. Anyone have any experience with this as to how long before Site A urls should replace Site B urls in the search results? I undestand there may be a ranking difference and CTR difference based on domain bias, etc... I'm just asking if everything goes as planned and there isn't a huge issue, does the process take weeks or months?

SEO impact difference between a URL Rewrite and 301 redirect
Hi guys and girls! Just putting a new site live, we changed the URL from one thing to another and I created a 301 file redirecting the urls like for like. The developer installing it has created a different file with columns like: RewriteRule ^page/ http://www.site/page [R=301,L] RewriteRule ^/page/ http://www.site/page [R=301,L] What's the difference? The page redirects but is there a difference between the 301 redirect and this URL rewrite in terms of SEO and link value?

Is it possible to perform a 301 redirect from a asp.net to a php? Or do you need to convert the asp.net language into php? Or something different? I welcome your thoughts? Regards, Thomas Rochford

301 and Canonical - is using both counterproductive
A site lost a great deal of traffic in July, which appears to be from an algorithmic penalty, and hasn't recovered yet. It appears several updates were made to their system just before the drop in organic results. One of the issues noticed was that both uppercase and lowercase urls existed. Example urls are: www.domain.com/product123
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | ABK717
www.domain.com/Product123 To clean this up, a 301 redirect was implemented a few months ago. Another issue found was that many product related urls had a parameter added to the url for a tracking purpose. To clean this up, the tracking parameters were removed from the system and a canonical tag was implemented as these pages were also found in Google's index. The tag forced a page such as www.domain.com/product123?ref=topnav to be picked up as www.domain.com/product123. So now, there is a 301 to address the upper and lowercase urls and a canonical tag to address the parameters from creating more unnecessary urls. A few questions here: -Is this redunant and can cause confusion to the serps to have both a canonical and 301 redirect on the same page? -Both the 301 and canonical tag were implemented several months ago, yet Google's index is still showing them. Do these have to be manually removed with GWT individually since they are not in a subfolder or directory? Looking forward to your opinions.0 -
301 redirect recommendations
One of our clients we are working on have two sites the main with a PR5 and a separate one with a PR4. We are planning on doing a 301 from the PR4 to a page on the PR5 Is it best to do: www.PR4.com ----> www.PR5.com/releveantPR4page or www.PR4.com/page ----> www.PR5.com/releveantPR4page Most pages on the PR4 site can fit into one PR5 page logically. However the PR4 has an about us, contact us, blog/with posts, FAQ, Applications, Legal Resources which are all pretty out dated.. The PR4 site is kinda messy and we are not sure if it will be easy to 301 each page individually with the user in mind. can we do a sitewide 301 redirect from the root PR4.com to a page PR/5.com/releveantPR4page and also do deeper 301's? PR4.com/PR4page ---> PR5.com/releveantPR4page

Duplicate content reported on WMT for 301 redirected content
We had to 301 redirect a large number of URL's. Not Google WMT is telling me that we are having tons of duplicate page titles. When I looked into the specific URL's I realized that Google is listing an old URL's and the 301 redirected new URL as the source of the duplicate content. I confirmed the 301 redirect by using a server header tool to check the correct implementation of the 301 redirect from the old to the new URL. Question: Why is Google Webmaster Tool reporting duplicated content for these pages?

Redirect 301 or Canonical.
Hello all, I have a page with a long post title and url path name (more than 70 caracters and 115). This page has many visits but I am changing the SEO website structure according to SEOMOz and forums guidelines so: I WILL CREATE A DUPLICATE PAGE WITH THE SAME INFO. This issue has been marked as an issue in the SEO tools, for long names>70 and url path names>115 My question is which option should I use and you would recommend me? 1. OPTION 1: Ideally I would like to keep the old post, so I should use the canonical tag, but my main concern is if the search engines in terms of SEO, even the canonical has been done, will penalise my SEO as there is still a post with bad SEO optimising, or if this is not the case because I already used the canonical. 2. OPTION 2: Eliminate the post and redirection 301 to the new page to keep the juice. I would prefer option 1, as I keep both post and page, but only if searchengines do not penalise my SEO as they detect a long post name and url path name. Thank you verty much, Antonio

Choose of destination for a 301 redirection
Hi, I had a website paris-football.com which ranked quite well on specific request as 'paris football" and "paris foot". I decided 2 months ago to stop this website as I had no time to update it and it was quite rubish in terms of content and make a redirection to a better quality website. I decided to redirect to the deep url http://www.sportytrader.com/paris-foot.php . The destination Url has not beneft from the redirection and has even seen its rankings drop since the redirection. do you think that it would have been better to redirect to the Home Page http://www.sportytrader.com ? Do you think that I can still change the destination url ? Thanks a lot for your help,
