Big hit taken on Google Search in Jan - Any Ideas?
-
Hello,
I manage a news site that gets new items posted daily. We had had a pretty even keel with Google search and ranking for some time now only on the 9th Jan we took a massive drop and have no recovered except for one big spike on the 29th January.
The only think we had done differently was not post as much over Christmas for about a week as people were on holiday but if this was the reason for it the posting is back to normal now and has been since the 6th Jan and nothing has recovered.
The site is wjlondon.com - any ideas greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Thank you I will try the things you suggest and see if this helps.
Its just so strange that it just dropped, had a huge spike and then dropped again. I will start thinking more carefully about our link structure

Hi,
It's more what Google perceives to be good however its good you don't have any. Whilst it sucks Google rankings tend to fluctuate you could look at your anchor text which are all over the place (don't worry they look natural) but how many of them are linking to your site (e.g site name). It may be you need to focus a little bit on branding ?
Another step is with some minor research the following suggests something happens on the date you mentioned I would dig into that a bit more maybe too.

Sorry if I can't help further they were some suggestions from a couple of minutes thinking.

No manual action or penalty and I have never used any dodgy back linking companies or anything like that. I have good back links from sites like Metro.com etc - well respected news sites - I know this for a fact so I don't understand how that could be the case.
-
I am pretty sure it is not a manual penalty, 2 of my link practise test sites got both hit on the same date losing 8-12 ranking spots (not as massive as yours) and I practises poor link building on both of them (which had them on page one rank one for 3 months) so I am pretty sure it has to do with your incoming links and OBL.
I had a quick look at your link profile and 95% of your referal domains are 0 when it comes to both citiation and trust flow same as with my 2 test sites.
You simply need good quality links as the old ones provide now 0 value.
Hope this helps

I'm sure the first question anyone will ask is - did you receive a manually action / penalty ?

Using Google to find a discontinued product.
Hi Guys. I mostly use this forum for business questions, but now it's a personal one! I'm trying to find a supplier that might still have discontinued product. It's the Behritone C5A speaker monitor. All my searches bring up a plethora of pages that appear to sell the product... but they have no stock. (Wouldn't removing these pages make for a better internet?) No 2nd hand ones on eBay 😞 Do you have any suggestion about how I can get more relevant results... i.e find supplier that might still have stock? Any tips or trick I may be able to use to help me with this? Many thanks in advance to an awesome community 🙂 Isaac.

Strange Google SERP Layout: Anyone?
I haven't been able to repeat this, but I just saw a strange Google SERP layout. The screenshot is attached below. Has anyone else seen something like this? I kind of rubbed my eyes and wondered 'if it was kicking in'. ca2JqaP

Content, for the sake of the search engines
So we all know the importance of quality content for SEO; providing content for the user as opposed to the search engines. It used to be that copyrighting for SEO was treading the line between readability and keyword density, which is obviously no longer the case. So, my question is this, for a website which doesn't require a great deal of content to be successful and to fullfil the needs of the user, should we still be creating relavent content for the sake of SEO? For example, should I be creating content which is crawlable but may not actually be needed / accessed by the user, to help improve rankings? Food for thought 🙂

Did The Last Google Algorithm Update, Hit sites with poor anchor text?
My content is quite strong within my niche, so I ranked well, but last month my rankings plummeted. On closer examination and scrutiny I discovered my anchor text needed updating. Has anyone else seen this happening in the last four weeks?

Is Google Rotating Good Matches?
I have a theory that Google may be trying to be fair to white-hat-seo sites that are doing the right things with blogging, linking, social media, etc. [ie that deserve equal good positioning] are being cycled to and from the first page, perhaps in a weekly or monthly basis. My theory would be that they are purposefully doing it to give those sites more equal exposure. My case: I've had top rankings for http://thedogbitelawyer.com for almost all of the important terms for dog bite lawyers for a couple of years now. When Penguin came out we lost some ground across the board, and identified that perhaps there was too much duplicate content left over from when I inherited the site. I reworked the site wording and link structure a bit and gained back positioning. Since that time we are up and down like a yo-yo on the top terms! Anybody else have this suspicion? If it's true, I don't need to stress, if we are bouncing around for other reason's I'd better keep stressing!

Google spitting out old data as new alerts
Am I just unlucky or are others seeing this too? I have several google alerts. For the past 6 months, google keeps sending crap along with good stuff. its a bit like their search results. There are three types of Alerts they send that I'm not impressed with. 1. Alerts that are from unintelligible splogs that take real news stories and rewrite them with unintelligible garbage that makes no sense at all. Sometimes, they serve up new alerts from the same splogs I saw several months ago, that I felt sure they would have zapped by now. 2. Old stories, that have been around for months. I just received one that was from January, from TechDirt, a big site that must get a huge amount of attention from google. 3. Irrelevant stories because they love to show how smart they are by splitting my alert keyword text into multiple words, but it gives useless results. This is the kind of stuff that crappy search engines like AltaVista used to do. Is google reverting to the childhood of search with all these changes?
