CHange insite Urls structure
-
Hello Guys!
I have a situation with a website and I need some opinions.
Today, the structured of my site is: (I have had this site architecture since many years)
- Main country home (www.mysite.com.tld)
o Product_1 Home (www.mysite.com.tld/product1/)
§ Product_1 articles
- www.mysite.com.tld/product1/product1_art1
- www.mysite.com.tld/product1/product1_art2
- www.mysite.com.tld/product1/product1_artx
o Product_2 Home (www.mysite.com.tld/product2/)
§ Product_2 articles
- www.mysite.com.tld/product1/product2_art1
- www.mysite.com.tld/product1/product2_art2
- www.mysite.com.tld/product1/product2_artx
I have several TLDs with their main and their products.
We are thinking in modify this structure and begin to use subdomains for each product (The IT guys need this approach because is simpler to distribute the servers load). I not very friendly with subdomains and big changes like this always can produce some problem (although the SEO migration would be ok, problems could appear, like ranking drops), But, the solution (the reasons are technical stuff), requires the mix of directories and subdomains in each product, leaving the structured in this way:
- Main country home (www.mysite.com.tld)
o Product_1 Home (www.mysite.com.tld/product1/)
§ Product_1 articles
- product1.mysite.com.tld/product1_art1
- product1.mysite.com.tld/product1_art2
- product1.mysite.com.tld/product1_artx
o Product_2 Home (www.mysite.com.tld/product2/)
§ Product_2 articles
- product2.mysite.com.tld/product1_art1
- product2.mysite.com.tld/product1_art2
- product2.mysite.com.tld/product1_artx
So, the product home will be in a directory buy the pages of the articles of this product will be in a subdomain.
What do you think about this solution? Beyond that the SEO migration would be fine, 301s, etc, can bring us difficulties in the rankings or the change can be done without any consideration?
Thanks very much!
Agustin

As per my information sub domains are considered to be the part of the same domain for quite some time now (http://www.seroundtable.com/subdomains-google-webmaster-tools-13960.html) but as per my experience the sub domain value is not as powerful as sub directory so the ranking drop is very much expected.
My advice to you is to sit with the IT person and come up with some alternate solutions ot this problem and in case this is the only solution, in that case plan a powerful marketing strategy and execute it once you restructure the domains to reduce the loss to minimum.
Hope this helps!

It will bring lots of issues. That's not a solution but a problem. Your IT should work on another approach to solve the server load instead of that URL restructure.
Subdomains are considered different sites, therefore hundreds of links from several subdomains could possibly bring a penalty, and the way to avoid that would be to use a nofollow tag for the links, which will hurt your SEO dramatically.
I am sure your IT can solve the server load distribution issue using another approach (DB servers, file servers, server cluster, etc.), if not, you better look for another IT.

What is the best structure for paginating comment structures on pages to preserve the maximum SEO juice?
You have a full webpage with a great amount of content, images & media. This is a social blogging site where other members can leave their comments and reactions to the article. Over time there are say 1000 comments on this page. So we set the canonical URL, and use Rel (Prev & Next) to tell the bots that the next subsequent block of 100 comments is attributed to the primary URL. Or... We allow the newest 10 comments to exist on the primary URL, with a "see all" comments link that refers to a new URL, and that is where the rest of the comments are paginated. Which option does the community feel would be most appropriate and would adhere to the best practices for managing this type of dynamic comment growth? Thanks

Changing from .com to .com.au
Hi All, we are looking for some guidance please, if at all possible. We have .com domain (the domain is older than 10 years), we have been using it for 2 years. We also have .com.au version of the domain (the domain is 2 years old, pointing to the .com domain) and isn't being used. We are an Australian based company. Our question is, should we be using .com.au instead of .com and if so, how would you advise going about doing the change over without having huge SEO impact on our business (negatively). We are on the home page for most of the searches we have optimized for, but we are always below the .com.au's - which is why we are considering the possibility of the move? Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated 🙂

Website URL Structure - keyword targeting on homepage vs internal pages
I have developed a few websites before where the homepage contains the content for the keywords I was targeting. This has been reasonably successful as I have found it easy enough to get links to the homepage. I am considering a new site in a totally different industry that I am thinking about structuring like this: mybrand.com (not necessarily targeting any keywords) mybrand.com/important-keyword-1/ (definitely want to target) mybrand.com/important-keyword-2 (equally important as 1st keyword) There will be several (30-ish) other pages targeting keywords but they are not as significant as the two mentioned above, more so they are about publishing informative information. The two important keywords are quite different but industry related. My questions are: should I be careful targeting keywords away from the homepage when the homepage gets the most links? Would I be better off building 2 different websites where the keyword content is captured in the homepage? Thanks,

Should /node/ URLs be 301 redirect to Clean URLs
Hi All! We are in the process of migrating to Drupal and I know that I want to block any instance of /node/ URLs with my robots.txt file to prevent search engines from indexing them. My question is, should we set 301 redirects on the /node/ versions of the URLs to redirect to their corresponding "clean" URL, or should the robots.txt blocking and canonical link element be enough? My gut tells me to ask for the 301 redirects, but I just want to hear additional opinions. Thank you! MS

How best to structure wordpress site.
I need help on how to structure my wordpress site to avoid duplicate content issues. Basically I have a main category page for each of my targeted keywords (about 12). From each of those though I want to create a category for each county in the uk and then about 15 towns within each county. This means I'm creating a LOT of categories. Eg: /plumbers/lincolnshire/lincoln x 15 other counties and towns /local-plumbers/cambridgeshire/cambridge x 15 other counties and towns (I have about 12 main keywords I'm going after) I'm basically creating a category for every town in the UK going after long tail keywords. What is the best way to manage this in wordpress? Advice from another question I posted on here is to write a unique category description for each one as the posts in each category are almost identical. The other problem here is I'm ending up with hundreds of links on a page. (They can't all be seen by the user as I'm using a drop down menu plugin). Any advice appreciated.

When is it worth re-structuring your site?
I recently started working on a site that is 8 years old and the currently URLs/ site structure is not SEO friendly. We are concerned that in re-structuring the site, we may loose our rankings. Has anyone ever completely re-structured their site? Was it worth it?
