Do Wikipedia links add value?

Do Wikipedia pages/links add any value to your website and SEO?
We are not an advertiser or seller of products, whereas we help people with planning so say I add an external link from an established page relevant to our service, will we get penalised by Wikipedia?
Or is it worth setting up a page about our company, similar to say - the BBC with an external link?

If you have good content on your site, there's a good chance that someone will add a link to your site from WIkipedia if it's appropriate for the topic. That happened to me and my site, and I can tell you that the links from Wikipedia helped: and I even see traffic from Wikipedia. I wouldn't be concerned whether or not the links are going to hurt your site: they will help establish trust.
If your business is established enough and is a public company, for example, there's a good chance that you either have a Wikipedia page for your company or you should start creating one. You'll need plenty of neutral informational type of mentions (news articles, etc.) that establishes your business's credibility.
One important thing to note here is that Wikipedia is a part of the Knowledge Graph, and it's important to get your site/business/link mentioned in the Knowledge Graph. Wikipedia is one way, but you can also participate in Freebase, which will help, as well.

Best practice is the only way with Wikipedia Julian, as each update is manually checked by an admin.
Just make sure that when you add a link, it is very much on topic. They aren't daft over there (sadly!).
For a page of your own, they will want to see you in the press, magazines, news - anything that is considered reputable. But this can also include off-line sources such as newspapers or books.

Thanks Andy - I think it would better for us to add external links to start off with and then pull together a company page over time. What is deemed as a 'reliable source' for Wikipedia?
Say we start adding links to relevant pages to our website - for example, linking from a page about Birds to our bird gallery, if these are found do Wikipedia just remove them or would we be penalised?
What's the best way to start adding links carefully - best practise?

If you want to setup a company page in Wikipedia, make sure you have lots of reliable sources that you can cite before you start. Lack of these will prevent the page from being accepted.
The links do add value though. I have been adding links into Wikipedia for some time now and have seen noticeable jumps in the SERPs for my clients. Wikipedia, and other similar sources, are where I always start a link building campaign.
Just be careful how you do it because someone will come and check the link to make sure it isn't an obvious attempt at just gaining a link for SEO purposes.

Rank drop after link reclamation
Link reclamation is good activity interms of technical SEO and UX. But I noticed couple of times rank drop post the link reclamation activity. Why does this happen? What might be the cause? Beside redirecting to the most relevant page in contest to the source page content; anything else we must be looking into?

Submitting url to link directories seen as un-natural link building?
Hi I have been a lurker for a long time, so I finally took the step to make my 1st post, and will hopefully start giving back more in the future since I have gained invaluable info from this great site Background I hired a new freelancer on our team of SEO consultants ("specialists") During the course a month he (the new consultant) submitted our website to numerous link directories (he assured me this is good), today I received the report of the work he had been doing for the past 4-weeks. I opened the report and I was furious and wanted to sack him there and then The Problem / My Question He had submitted our website to 150 directories with various levels of page rank, ranging from 7-1. Most of the directories are totally irrelevant to our niche (we are in the catering business) and he had gone and submitted the site to directories such as "finance busters", "questfinder" etc For all 150 submissions he used: exactly the same url exactly the same title exactly the same description exactly the same keywords My Concern Am I right to be worried about this? Or am I completely wrong and may this actually have an effect (even if none)? The way I see it is that Google is seeing 150 duplicate links coming from irrelevant directories all within a months time, which will trigger a red flag and possibly do major damage to my site, which has always been strictly white hat and been doing pretty well. p.s does link directory submissions even count these days anyway? New un-natural links to my website that i didnt create.. and lots of them!
Hi There In the last few months my search organic traffic has gone down and i am looking into links to my website through webmaster tools. It looks like there is some sort of automated robot that is building new links to my website at a rate of 5 per week! All are spammy, directory links. It looks like this has been going on for a few months now. I have no idea how to find and stop this. But i have a feeling this might explain why my traffic is down. ALSO non of these links are in MOZ Open site explorer or Majestic SEO.. they are just showing as just discovered in webmaster tools. I am assuming that means its pretty accurate ?! Is Link Building Dead?
I know there are various posts about this but none of them are up to date. I am so reluctant to do any linking now as I was hurt by google algorithms (without even knowing I was doing anything bad back in April 2012). I am just overwhelmed with all the seo info out there - I have written articles, blog on my site, lots of facebook postings but I don't seem to reach people I now have someone who wants to help me get a new linking structure to get my ranking back but the whole idea scares me. Is Inter-linking websites together good or bad for SEO?
I know of a website that inter-links a handful of websites together (ex- coloring.ws interlinks to a handful of other sites, including dltk-kids.com, and others). Is this negative for SEO? I was thinking about creating a few related sites and inter-linking all of them together, since they will all be relevant to each other. Any thoughts would be great!

Is OSE data reliable and removal of malicious inbound links?

Yes, I know Google will theoretically and maybe eventually "ignore" such links, but that will be on Google time 4 weeks or 4 years - who knows. Plus, with a younger site with a thinner link profile - anything like the links above can't be helping me......
