Changing .nl to .eu impact on rankings?
-
Hi all,
I have 2 questions concerning the merge of two websites of ours.
We would like to combine our .nl and .be website to one big .eu website. Both websites have dutch and english rankings in The Netherlands and Belgium.
1. Will the rankings change because of the domain change to .eu?
2. Will the rankings in both countries change because of the merge?I hope somebody can help me,
Greetings

Thank you all for responding.
Your answers were very clear and useful.

Marike,
Whenever you change URLs, there will be some changes in rankings. However, ultimately, combining several established sites into one larger site will be better in the long run, as it helps with your overall Domain Authority and trust.
Keep in mind that 301 redirects are important--and if possible you may consider moving some content over time, and not move all the content all at once.
Also, your links will need to be updated: reach out to as many site owners as possible to tell them about the new URL change and ask them to update the links.

Hi Marike,

Yes, change for the better or for the worse, usually they might take a dip for and then recover if all is done well and thought out.

Same response as above.
As for the best way to do this, there are many ways to accomplish this well, and its worth doing all the due diligence.
Some resources from moz to get you started here and here.
Hope this helps

Hi Marike,
unfortunately I personally would answer both questions with "yes".
To sum it up: a change of domain names is not the best thing from SEO perspectives. But of course there are many situations in which this can`t be avoided and where SEO has to stand back.
The change/merge of a domain has always a certain impact on the rankings which have been established by the old one. I highly recommend you to use a 301 redirect or several if neccessary - they pass the PageRank for example.
Furthermore you should use the change of address tool in the GWMT - it`s used to tell Google that the address of your site has changed.
If you
ve done the work you
ll have to be patient. It might take some time until you get back all of your old rankings. In general this doesnt take soo much time but I
ve experienced that there is a big chance that you wont get all your old rankings back and that those positions aren
t written in stone... well this aspect is also valid for well established domains.Best regards, Marc

If we should add a .eu or remain .com solely
Hello, Our company is international and we are looking to gain more traffic specifically from Europe. While I am aware that translating content into local languages, targeting local keywords, and gaining more European links will improve rankings, I am curious if it is worthwhile to have a company.eu domain in addition to our company.com domain. Assuming the website's content and domain will be exactly the same, with the TLD (.eu vs .com) being the only change - will this add us benefit or will it hurt us by creating duplicate content - even if we create a separate GSC property for it with localized targeting and hreflang tags? Also - if we have multiple languages on our .eu website, can different paths have differing hreflangs? IE: company.eu/blog/german-content German hreflang and company.eu/blog/Italian-content Italian hreflang. I should note - we do not currently have an hreflang attribute set on our website as content has always been correctly served to US-based English speaking users - we do have the United States targeted in Google Search Console though. It would be ideal to target countries by subfolder rather if it is just as useful. Otherwise, we would essentially be maintaining two sites. Thanks!

How does changing sitemaps affect SEO
Hi all, I have a question regarding changing the size of my sitemaps. Currently I generate sitemaps in batches of 50k. A situation has come up where I need to change that size to 15k in order to be crawled by one of our licensed services. I haven't been able to find any documentation on whether or not changing the size of my sitemaps(but not the pages included in them) will affect my rankings negatively or my SEO efforts in general. If anyone has any insights or has experienced this with their site please let me know!

Struggling to get indexed and ranked
I am working on a brand new website and really struggling to get the site indexed and listed for it's business name! I don't normally struggle and have got clients ranked for much more challenging keywords so I'm a bit stuck! The site is a new domain and has been live for about two months. The business previously used an old domain and this has been correctly 301'd to the new domain. There is no duplicate content with any other website when checked through Copyscape.com Webmaster Tools has been set-up and verified and this shows the site is being crawled but in Google site:www.website.com.au shows no pages as being indexed. Google Places has been set-up and verified, the site has also been added to local citation sites. There are also a few incoming links from other sources. Robots.txt is fine and has been checked. Business name mentioned in the title tag, footer and throughout the site. Does anyone have any ideas how I might be able to get ranked or is it just a waiting game? Or have I missed out something really obvious?? My last step is doing a crawl test to see if this brings up anything I have missed. Thanks Karen

Page Rank gone - technical difficulty?
Hi all, after coming back from the holidays, I noticed that our PR (6 on the homepage) has vanished into "Unranked". All other sites are also "unranked". I tested other domains - PR still there, so the problem does not lie in the PR checker. There are no drops in traffic, rankings, no messages in the GWMT, the same numer of indexed pages, inbound links okay (all natural)... As you see, I checked everything I thought could be a hint to a solution, but found nothing... This goes on for the 3rd day now (after my holidays, maybe even longer). Could there be a technical problem causing this "drop"? Our website: http://www.access.de/ I am thankful for all hints/suggestions... Thanx...

Why am I ranking for this
In need of some second opinions here. I have a domain softboxsystems.co.uk which ranks for the keyword sofrigam. It is not meant to! Have posted previously on this but to cut long story short, the clients .com started to rank for this term and then they lost the contract to supply the services so got a legal request to stop ranking for it (it had been seoed so was ranking 100% on off page issues). The client is a UK company so they decided that they would block the .com from google and use the co.uk domain for a period of time instead while they worked on deranking the domain. The .com domain was therefore blocked from the index, the .co.uk homepage would not rank for anything then it turned out that they had placed a canonical tag link from the .co.uk to the blocked .com!!! On my suggestion this was removed and the homepage of the .co.uk appeared in google in a matter of a couple of days (other pages on the site were indexed but not the home). Now, somehow the co.uk domain homepage is ranking for the banned term. I have checked open link and there are not any links pointing to the domain with the anchor of sofigram, nor is the term mentioned onsite. I now have the client panicking on the phone to get the page out of google again asap before the competitors legal people get wind of it. I am still trying to deindex the .co.uk homepage in the short term. I have readded the canonical back to the .com as that worked at not getting that page indexed previously. The main issue I have is how on earth I am ranking for this term in the first place and more importantly how do I stop from ranking for this term! The only terms I can find as anchor text in the moz tools are the keywords I have been seoing for help hehe thanks

How to change URL of RSS Feed?
Hi, There are some websites that keeps on scraping my content. I have blocked them already from accessing my website using .htaccess but they still get my content via RSS feed. I have tried delaying the RSS feed but I think this affected google rankings. My question is, is there a way to change the URL of my RSS Feed? From: http://www.mysite.com/feed to http://www.mysite.com/feed2

301 redirect dropped page rank
Hi, We have a www domain that I have changed to a non www domain. The www domain had been in place for some time and had a good page rank, PR4. After this change the page rank dropped significantly (PR0, and now recently back to PR2) despite it being a 301 redirect which I thought "should" carry over the page rank. Yes, I am aware I should have just left it be. Hind sight 20/20 .. ya ya ya 🙂 My questions Is the 301 the correct method for this? Why did the page rank drop despite the 301? Should we go back to the www domain at this point? Thanks Kris
