Large Companies Taking Over Rankings
-
Recently many large companies. (lowes, bed bath and beyond, walmart, target, ace hardware, etc.), have taken over the rankings of keywords we used to rank high in. Is there any way to improve our rankings and compete with these large companies? Is this due to recent Google changes?
Sample keywords are: electrolux vacuum bags, oreck vacuum bags, vacuum cleaner bag, vacuum cleaner filter

We compete against those box stores and do really well in the local serps for long and some head terms.
I don't know if local applies, but there are battles in that space to win.

lowes, bed bath and beyond, walmart, target, ace hardware...
Yes, just in the past month, some of these big brands and others have moved strongly into my SERPs.
Is this due to recent Google changes?
YES. Google is favoring them.
** Is there any way to improve our rankings and compete with these large companies? **
I have a whole website about a single product niche, with more information about these products than all competitors combined, yet google ranks these companies when they have one cheap, low-quality product from the niche.
I am killing the big brands on all of the long tail, but they are really strong in the head terms.
Keep hammering! Attack the long tail. Saturate it with good content. Make your site the information place for these products. The people at walmart and other big brands can't answer questions about these products. They know nothing about them. Lots of people will be from you because they know that you are informed about these products and can help them. Walmart knows nothing and is worthless for help.

Are domain variations hurting our rank?
Hi, I have a client who registered many different variations of their domain name, that are pointing to the website. Now I see that many high value links are not linking to the main domain, but a hyphen variation. So when the main domain is something like www.brandservicename.com The links go to www.brand-service-name.com I suppose they should change all those links (if possible), but does it really make a difference? Thank you!

Changing URL - Ranking Disappeared?
Hi All, I named a page URL /plectrums/ within the back end framework. But then decided to change it to /personalised-plectrums/ I resubmitted a GWT sitemap and 301 redirected plectrums -> personalised-plectrums My ranking for personalised plectrums has disappeared and has not come back does anyone know why this is? Or is there something I have missed? Lewis

Is page rank lost through a 301 redirect?
Hi everyone. I'd really appreciate your help with this one 🙂 I've just watched Matt Cutt's video 'what percentage of PageRank is lost through a 301 redirect?' and I am confused. I had taken this to mean that a re-direct would always lose you page rank, but watching it again I am not so sure. He says that the amount of page rank lost through a 301 redirect is the same as any other link. Does this mean that no page rank at all is lost during site migrations? Or is it the case that first page rank would be lost from the original link and then more page rank would be lost from any subsequent redirects? watch?v=Filv4pP-1nw

Changing Domain Registrars have an affect on rankings?
So, I just wanted to move my domain from GoDaddy to NameCheap. I am still thinking about the move as I am not sure what affect it will have on my rankings. Has anyone here done it before? Did you see any drop in rankings? Also, while I was at it - I was thinking maybe I can add WhoisGuard too. I am not too paranoid about people getting my info from WhoIs, but does having a private Whois have an affect on ranking?

How to handle a future company expansion?
One of my clients is looking to start a new company and they are thinking of SEO right from the get go. While this is great for me there are a few issues that I have never really encountered before. For instance, my client knows that she will be expanding into a different city in the future but wants to generate local traffic to start with. She will initially start with CITY-A before moving to CITY-B one year later. Which of the following would be a better solution: 1) Have CITY-A targeted on the root domain for one year, build links and grow the site for CITY-A then create two sub domains in one year targeting CITY-A and CITY-B (ie. CITY-A.companyname.com and CITY-B.companyname.com), then make the root domain a generic company site with no mention of location (or mentions of both locations). . . 2) Create the two sub domains now and begin with CITY-A.companyname.com and have the root domain be a general overview of the company and our services without being location specific. 3) Create the root domain (companyname.com) and have that target CITY-A and keep it targeting the initial city, then create a sub-domain in a year to target CITY-B I keep going between these solutions and seem to have hit a mental block. What are your thoughts? Any other ideas are more that welcome! Thanks, Net66

Newly appointed SEO at a small company
Hi. I am new to the world of SEO, and SEOmoz has already taught me a lot. I am a newly appointed in house SEO at www.completeoffice.co.uk. They want to rank for the keyword office interior design, but I noticed that all the keywords they are trying to rank for, there homepage shows up on search results. So I optimised the on page SEO of their website for the specific office interior design page. http://www.completeoffice.co.uk/interiors.aspx. I took it from a grade F to a grade A. Currently they are showing up just outside the top 50 for office interior design, and its the homepage in the google results. Now I have made these changes and on page optimised the SEO for this page to be solely for office interior design keyword will the search results change so that it is the specific office interior design page showing and linking to , or will it always remain the home page. I have optimised many of the other pages in this way so that a keyword will link to the relevant page and rank for that relevant page, rather than get the home page to rank for 30 keywords. Thanks for any help.
