Homepage is losing rankings...need help!
-
Hi folks,
Our company has been doing SEO for www.3dincites.com since October. Since the website hadn't been optimized at all, one of the first things we did was to add keyword-optimized page title and meta description to the homepage. The person who implemented didn't do it right the first time so we needed to change the page title again after a week or so. We also changed the preferred domain in GWT. Ever since those changes were implemented, the homepage has been decreasing in rankings for the the keywords we optimized it for. This is very surprising as the website has high-quality unique content and pretty solid backlinks. Moreover, the search traffic to other pages is through the roof (2K increase since October) so the client is happy, however, this decrease in rankings for the homepage (from 3d to 6th page for "3d IC technology" which is the main keyword) doesn't let me sleep well at nights. Any ideas why this is happening?

You missed Casey's most important point, zoomzoom. You say the primary phrase you're targeting on the home page is "3d IC technology". But the only place that phrase exists is once in the meta-title of the page.
There's no way a page is going to rank for an even moderately competitive term by only have it in the meta-title. If that phrase is the focus of the page, it should naturally occur multiple times in the copy of the page, in captions, alt tags, etc. Right now, Google has no solid reason to think the page is actually about that phrase.
Now, whether the home page is the most valuable one to rank for that phrase is another discussion, but if that's the page you want to rank, you've at least got to use those words on the page!
Hope that helps?
Paul

Thanks!
Sorry my typo, I meant December page rank. October PageRank was also 0, which was not unexpected since the website had just been launched last April. However, it was a surprise to us it was still 0 in December, after we had got a number of good backlinks.
As I mentioned earlier, organic search traffic has been increasing steadily since October even for the homepage that was loosing rankings. However, most of the increase was probably due to low-tail keywords. I cannot see how anyone would be going to page 6 of search results.
I'll follow your advice on examining the competition in more detail. However, it still seems the problem is deeper than that.
-
To clarify, I didn't say that your PageRank was "0" in October. I was hoping YOU knew what your PageRank was in October because if it was 3 and you are now a 0, then clearly that would imply a larger issue. So unfortunately, unless you can backtrack your previous PageRank histroy, all we can do now is speculate.
And I'm confused about your statement here: "because the website overall is doing well there is no clear indication what is causing the drop in rankings for the homepage only." The tool I gave you is for Google Organic-only traffic. And I'm sure most of your traffic is still coming to your home page, that's common for sites. So I'd really look at the tool to see if there was any noticeable drops especially "back a couple of months ago."
You also said specific "ranking drops." So that means you have been able to map keywords to your home page, correct? I would do a couple of things with that information:
- examine the sites Google is now ranking above you for these keyword queries and look for trends
- example your backlink profile with an eye towards these specific keyword phrases that have dropped
- example your on-page optimization (especially internal linking) that references these specific keyword phrases (anchor text)
Keep me updated.

Thanks Casey! I really appreciate it!
We are aware of the load speed issues. We just started featuring ads on the website so we are currently working on fixing it. However, this is a recent issue and we've been losing ranking for a few months already.
The tool you recommended is great however, because the website overall is doing well there is no clear indication what is causing the drop in rankings for the homepage only.
It does concern me, however, that the page rank is 0. I know it hasn't been updated for a while but how come it was 0 in October? Is that a sign we had some bad backlinks? I personally did a link audit a few weeks ago and didn't find any suspicious websites.
-
Hi ZoomZoom,
Although I can't do a full site audit in this forum I see some clear issues which could easily explain your drops:
- Your site loads horribly slow. You're scoring very low on the Google PageSpeed Insights Tool
- You've got 70 images on that home page. That's hurting your Page Speed and overall usability.
- You appear to optimizing for the phrase "3D IC technology" and yet it's not represented on the page once.
I'm showing a PageRank 0 on your site, a white toolbar. There has been a PageRank update since October. What was it previously? Did you lose PageRank during the last update? It looks like you have a relatively average DA 34 score which should be enough to rank you for most keywords. Make sure to head over to the Panguin Tool and run this site against reported recent algorithmic updates by Google, that will help fine-tune your site auditing.
Finally, when you change or jigger with setting in GW Tools it can take a period of a couple of weeks for things to "shake out." So just an FYI there as well.
Good luck!

Moving to a new domain for second time - critical, help needed fast!
Hello, Important: please do not ask why we need to change the domain, its not the matter at all, thank you for understanding. Over a month ago we successfully changed our domain name, 301 redirected, did GWT 'change of address' and all. The old domain was 2 years old, ranking very well, the new domain change of address was a success and traffic back on the new domain after a week. Today we need to change the domain name again, unfortunately, for some reasons, we have to, however we are not sure what to do in GWT, when I went to 'change of address' in the domain (the new first domain), i saw the following message (screenshot attached too): This site is undergoing a move Old URL | New URL If any URL on the left should not be moved, you can withdraw its move request. To do this, click the URL and then Withdraw. Now our questions: 1. For second time moving to a new domain, we should move from the old first domain (301 from the first old domain) or from the second domain (301 from the second domain)? 2. If from the old first domain, should we Withdraw from the first domain (lift up the first change of address in GWT) and then redirect the old first domain to the second new domain (the one we want to move now)? If yes, what to do with the first new domain (the one which we moved to a month ago) 3. If we should move from the first new domain, then what to do? The situation is clear but confusing what to do? It's just that we need to change the domain name again, move to a new one, for the second time, now we should redirect from the first old domain or first new domain? I purchased MOZ just to get help from you guys here, the only place i thought I could be helped. Of course gonna use Moz service too now that i have puurchased it 🙂 Awaiting your quick help guys. Thank you! 8csVpOZ2QoiYCoTR1t_SnQ.png

Only homepage is ranking after site re-launch
We've been moving all our sites over to a new platform (Demandware) this year. In the process, they've all gotten updated designs (from the same template), on-page optimizations, etc. Since they're all on the same platform and are essentially copies from one template, any technical issues found have been fixed across all sites. The problem I'm seeing is there are a few sites that haven't really seen much/any recovery from the site launch, and these are sites that were done 4-5 months ago. There's one in particular that's especially concerning, since it's showing issues that none of the other sites seem to have. In my Moz reports, it looks like of all the keywords that are ranking, they're only ranking the https version of the homepage (and from what I'm seeing, the https version wasn't picked up and ranked until the beginning of October, which was also the time that WMT shows a huge drop in clicks and impressions). I've crawled the site (ScreamingFrog), done a site search in Google (all pages look to be indexed), etc. and I haven't come across any specific problems there that would suggest a technical issue. We're wondering if it might be a link authority problem, since this site had the most dramatic change in navigation. The navigation used to be product based (Boots, Shoes, etc.) and is now broken up by gender. I've noticed that a few other pages that are ranking are dual gender pages that also existed on the old site, whereas all of these new categories aren't ranking at all and I'm not seeing this happen with any of our other sites. I've gone down a bunch of different paths trying to figure this out, but I haven't come up with any concrete answers as to why this is happening and how to fix it. Any thoughts as to what else I can look into or try for this?

A question of rankings (with actual domains)
Working with the main site featured in this Open Site Explorer comparison (you'll need a pro account to view this), and have been for quite some time. Recently we've slid behind Ebay (huge brand, I get it), but the other competitors don't really make sense to me. Main phrase is pontoon boats, and maybe I'm too close to this, but we seem to be in the best shape overall in terms of the domain, the page itself, and even our social media is pretty successful (we're closing in on 5,000 likes and have a pretty engaged audience). More internal linking is an opportunity, but I'd like another set of eyes (or several for that matter) to weigh in on opinions. I'm a bit stumped. Thanks Mozzers!

Please help on this penalized site!
OK, this is slowly frying my brain and would like some clarification from someone in the know, we have posted multiple reconsideration requests the regular "site violates googles quality guidelines" .."look for unnatural links etc" email back in March 2012, I came aboard the business in August 2012 to overcome bad SEO companies work. So far i have filled several disavow requests by domain and cleared over 90% of our backlink profile which where all directory, multiple forum spam links etc from WMT, OSE and Ahrefs and compiled this to the disavow tool, as well as sending a google docs shared file in our reconsideration request of all the links we have been able to remove and the disavow tool, since most where built in 2009/2010 a lot where impossible to remove. We managed to shift about 12 - 15% of our backlink profile by working very very hard too remove them. The only links that where left where quality links and forum posts created by genuine users and relevant non spam links As well as this we now have a high quality link profile which has also counteracted a lot of the bad "seo" work done by these previous companies, i have explained this fully in our reconsideration request as well as a massive apology on behalf of the work those companies did, and we are STILL getting generic "site violates" messages, so far we have spent in excess of 150 hours to get this penalty removed and so far Google hasn't even batted an eyelid. We have worked SO hard to combat this issue it almost feels almost very personal, if Google read the reconsideration request they would see how much work we have done too remove this issue. If anyone can give any updates or help on anything we have missed i would appreciate it, i feel like we have covered every base!! Chris www.palicomp.co.uk

Rankings going down down down
Hi guys, I know this is a little open ended, but any advice/ideas would be greatly appreciated. I launched a new site about 3 months ago (www.transfersandshuttles.co.za). I have had unique, useful articles written for it, and the site does provide a useful service. I have done a little link building and continue to do so. The site was making decent progress moving up the rankings for a few weeks, but now it just seems to get worse and worse.

Social Signals...I Need More
Hi, Having used the Open Site Explorer (page specific metrics) tool I've realized I'm lacking in the Social Signals area...I have only 1 tweet and ZERO for everything else (Facebook shares, Likes, Google +1 etc). So I have 2 quesitons: How can I get more social signals (is there a service I can use to do it)? How long will the new social signals take to appear in the Open Site Explorer information? I've just paid someone on Fiverr.com to share my website link on his Facebook account, to tweet it, and also to use PingFM... Any other ideas would be GREAT - I can see this is a real weakness for my websites... Thanks, James

Need help identifying why my content rich site was hurt by the Panda Update.
Hi - I run a hobby related niche new / article / resource site (http://tinyurl.com/4eavaj4) which has been heavily impacted by the Panda update. Honestly I have no idea why my Google rankings dropped off. I've hired 2 different SEO experts to look into it and no one has been able to figure it out. My link profile is totally white hat and stronger then the majority of my competitors, I have 4000+ or so pages of unique, high quality content, am a Google News source, and publish about 5 new unique articles every day. I ended up deleting a 100 or so thin video pages on my site, did some url reorganization (using 301s), and fixed all the broken links. That appeared to be helping as my traffic was returning to normal. Then the bottom dropped out again. Since Saturday my daily traffic has dropped by 50%. I am really baffled at this point as to what to do so any help would be sincerely appreciated. Thanks, Mike jamescrayton2003@yahoo.com
