Webmaster tools change of addresss
-
Hi Mozzers,
I am about to move a load of content from one site to another and switch off the first site. I've got all my 301s mapped and ready to go. My gosh, that's one heck of a piece of work - it better be worth it
I have been looking at Webmaster Tools Change of address. I want to know which site do I choose to change the address to? I have three versions of my site in webmaster tools:
- the ssl version (https)
- the non-ssl version (http)
- No www. in front
My site has a sitewide SSL certificate (company policy - personally, I'd only have it on the parts that need it, but life's too short for some battles...) so should I send everything to the https version? My instinct says the https version but I really can't afford to get this wrong.
Anyone have any thoughts on this? Please help!
Thank you,
Amelia xx

If you've verified them all you can also tell Google your preferred version thus avoiding the headache as it would only use that one version and you wouldn't have to worry about three of them.

Hi Jstrong,
I have a cousin called J strong! I don't suppose you are the same person, but if you are, Hi James!!!
Thank you for pointing this out, yes it is very important to have a preferred domain set. I'm just about to double-check that I have done it.
Have a great day

Thank you, you have confirmed my thinking on this. I will choose the https version.
I'm OCD and have verified all versions of my site in webmaster tools... Is this normal? I thought it was better to have and not need than not have and need... if you know what I mean?
Thanks again for responding, it's very kind and helpful of you to do so. I hope you are having a lovely day

Hello,
Yes sounds like you need to redirect to the https: version. One thing to keep in mind though is to also set your preferred domain once the change is complete. Is the new site going to be https://www.domain.com or https://domain.com? Make sure the preferred domain matches this along with any redirects that are setup. It's important to be consistent.

Hi Amelia,
Which version of the site is it that has been verified in Webmaster tools? Google will see each as a separate site, so my guess will be that you need to choose the https.

Use the site that you want to be your main url
so if you direct all your visitors to just htttp:www. use that
remember you also don't need to do it all at once you can migrate over time to help ease Google into it a bit more and help you not loose as much traffic in one go.
Hope it helps.

My visibility went from 14% to 3.33% this week. HTTPS Change?
So I am trying to figure out how my google rankings dropped from 3 to 9 This past week. Could it be the new HTTPS security issue? My site was created in HTTP not HTTPS. Is this an easy fix? Can I hire someone on this site to fix this?

Homepage Not Displaying Changes
I changed our homepage banner image, and the change shows up if I'm logged into site (it's a WP site). However, when I log out of WP and go to the site, the change doesn't display. I've cleared the cache's, tried different browsers and on different devices, but it only shows the updated version when I'm logged in. Why would that be? And, how can I "force" it to update? Thanks so much! Ruben Site: www.kempruge.com Attached is what it is supposed to display. XxLWPCA.jpg?1

Map Search Tools to integrate on Accommodation Website
Hello all, Can any recommend a Map Search tool that i can integrate into my accommodation website. Ideally I want to be able to pin my clients on the map search with links back to their listing page on my website and provide an alternative search facility for clients looking for accommodation. Am covering the South Africa region specifically. Am assuming that i could go down the Google Maps route but would really like to know what alternatives there are on offer. Also what SEO considerations do i need to think about when adding this to my website. Thanks in advance for any help.

Template change, huge drop in rankings
We recently changed the template of our website but we kept the same url structure, most titles are the same, the content changed a little bit, the description is the same, and the same on-page SEO. Although we have been very careful and the actual template change took less than 5 minutes, we experienced a huge drop in rankings (even more than 10 positions in Google serp). Does anyone have any idea what could have caused such a drop? The weird thing is that Google still has the old website in cash and not the new one. We resubmitted the sitemap, made a few more redirects... but anyway... what else can we do? Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

SEO Considerations for a Platform Change
We are getting ready to move our e-commerce platform from Zencart to Magento as the original Zencart framework is pretty dated. while I'm excited to move to a more modern platform, I'm terrified at the potential SEO risk involved with doing so given that all URLs will likely be different and we're considering updating many product listings. Almost all of the site's traffic is organic, so maintaining rankings is extremely important. I'd love any advice, but especially that related to: Best way to redirect all new URLs sitewide The prudence of heavily editing product listings at the same time of redirecting the URL (i.e. updating product descriptions) Site structure: Should I strive to keep the new site link structure as similar to the old as possible? Resources or guides on transitioning a site from a SEO perspective Other major facets I'm missing I appreciate any help or sights you can offer! Thank you....
