Buying a domain vs. renting a domain
-
I am considering buying and redirecting a domain that has a pretty strong, relevant link profile. However, it's very expensive. There is another option to rent the domain on a month-to-month basis. I am interested in doing this for at least a month just to see what SEO benefits are to be had and if it would ultimately be worth buying or not. Can renting a domain have any negative impacts on my primary site? Would the search engines know if I did this? Is there any harm in having those redirects appear and then disappear?

Thanks for talking me out of this one Andy. It's just too risky.

If you follow some of the links in there, you will find lots of info on what is a correctly acquired link. You won't find what you are suggesting in there anywhere.
If by off base you mean, do I agree with them? Nope. It's a black-hat technique, but like many black hat techniques, you can get gains - mostly short-lived as Google finds ways to clamp down on them.
I can only give you my opinions on what this is Andrew. Just be aware that these things can come back and bite you hard and then you can end up with an exclusion, never mind a penalty.

On second thought, it definitely isn't a white hat technique. But the google links guide you sent is actually google link schemes, and it doesn't mention buying whole domains in there. It mentions buying individual links, but not entire domains. (Maybe I'm nitpicking here?)
I'm curious as to what you think of this recent Moz thread: http://moz.com/community/q/buying-expired-domains-with-decent-da-pa-for-seo-purposes. Do you feel that these people are totally off base?
-
It certainly isn't a white-hat (ethical) technique Andrew. If it were, it would appear in the Google links guide, which it doesn't. What that article above says is just how you do it - no mention of it being an ethical way to gain links. What you are saying there is just because one site is similar to another, it is OK to just forward people there - it isn't. At least, it isn't if you want to stay white-hat about it.
If this were you moving a site, then that is a different matter altogether.

Hi Andy,
Thanks for your response. I don't believe setting up a redirect would be classified as "misleading / deceiving" visitors because the domain is very relevant to our site and we would be able to provide appropriate redirected landing pages for all of its existing links. The research I have done suggests that this practice of "domaining" is still a white-hat, effective way of acquiring links. Here is one resource I used: http://searchenginewatch.com/article/2328577/Domaining-for-Links
I don't have enough time to focus on two individual domains. I want to strengthen my primary domain.

Hi Andrew,
If all you are planning on doing is buying / renting a domain, only for it to be redirected to another domain, this is something that will definitely pick up a penalty off Google. This would fall into the category of 'misleading / deceiving visitors'.
If you have a domain with such a strong link profile, why would you not want to have a site on that domain and use it, but don't go down the route of automatic redirects to other sites. This will cause you untold headaches.

Secondary Domain Outranking Master Website
IEEE is a large professional association dedicated to serving engineers. The IEEE Web Presence is made up of flagship sites like IEEE.org, IEEEXplore, and IEEE Spectrum, mid-tier sites like Computer.org, and smaller sites like those dedicated to specific conferences. It is unclear exactly when this started - but searches in Google for [ieee] currently return ieeeusa.org before ieee.org. This is troublesome, as users are typically looking for IEEE.org with such a general query. ieeeusa.org is a site that has a much narrower focus - it is dedicated to public policy. IEEE.org is one of the strongest domains - I am thinking that this is a glitch of some sort. I am removing a stale sitemap that is referenced in robots.txt (though again, I'm not seeing any issues with other pages - its just two queries that are trouble: [ieee] and [about ieee]. And its noticeable in analytics 🙂 http://ieee.d.pr/hMg0/YhklCw7Z What do you think? 🙂

Is there any value in "starting from scratch" on a new domain?
Hi, Our ecommerce store - we have had some duplicate content issues and they have been corrected, but of course, Google takes time to pick up on these. Our link profile is very poor, so we wont lose a lot by going to a new domain in that sense. My question is, in what instances is it worthwhile starting under a new domain? And in which not? Presumably you can also 301 the whole site - when is it worth doing this or not? Thanks, Ben

Branded Anchor Text, Exact vs. Non-exact Match Domain
Hello, For NLPCA.com, when you search for "NLP California" in Google, the letters "nlp" are bolded in the SERP URL and so is "ca". See here. This is because "ca" is an abbreviation for "California" Thus, this is not an exact match domain but it is close. What should our branded anchor text be? I want to change the anchor text profile to 98% branded anchor text. The 3 names our company goes by are NLP California NLP Institute of California NLP and Coaching Institute Let me know if we should not use one or more of these names for branded anchor text.

Keyword Rich Domains on Same IP
In addition to my main website, I want to create two new sites for the upcoming football and basketball seasons. By starting now, I'm thinking I have enough time to get them ranked decently. I have purchased www.collegefootballpredictions.net for the upcoming football seasons. The intent here is two fold. First, I'd like to rank in the top 3 for "College Football Predictions." Second, and this is why I'm thinking that Google won't hate me for the approach, is that someone looking for that search term is much more likely to convert on a landing page geared for them then on my main website. If the goal of a separate website is truly to compliment the main website, then is it considered white hat? I'm thinking that, as long as my intentions are pure, they should go on the same IP. Placing them on separate IPs could be a good way of letting the big G know that I'm trying to cheat the system and get away with it.

How does someone rank page one on google for one domain for over 150 keywords?
A local seo is exclaiming his fantastic track record for a pool company(amonst others) in our local market. Over 150 keywords on page one of google. I checked out a few things using some moz tools and didn't find anything that would suggest that this has come from white hat strategies, tactics or links etc. Interested in how he is doing this and if it is white hat? Thanks, C
