Link Juice Inquiry
-
Hello,
So I have a website (example.com).
I have an ajax pop-up (example.com/#example) that I am receiving a bunch of links to.
Since this pop-up (example.com/#example) is on my homepage, are these links giving juice to the homepage, or this pop-up, or both?
-
Hi Brandon,
To the best of our knowledge, Google does not "notice" or count URL content after a hash, meaning that the link juice would stop with www.example.com. It is almost certain that the home page is receiving the benefit of these links.
Cheers,
Jane

From an analysis which was by no means exhaustive, by definition, AJAX controls are extenders. Go to http://www.asp.net/ajaxlibrary/ajaxcontroltoolkitsamplesite/modalpopup/modalpopup.aspx
So, how would they possibly have link juice? Maybe I'm missing something but doesn't seem to be very different from the use of a bookmark on a page -- it's still the page that is garnering the link juice. The bookmark is a component of the page.
I'm old school and I may be missing something! Thanks for a challenging question. - Alan

Thank you Billy
Brandon, I wouldn't advise trying to redirect from a page in this manner. First of all, you will lose link juice with every 301 made (there is always some loss), and secondly, you are trying to redirect for SEO benefits, rather than for the users.
I'm not even sure a 301 from a pop-up back to another page will work correctly - it isn;t something I have ever tried as it isn't something I would do.
Is asking for the links to change not an option?
-Andy
-
No, the pop-up doesn't automatically show up.
What about 301ing the URL to the homepage? That would pass the juice wouldn't it?
-
I think the best you can hope for is that some of the juice is passing. I'd strongly recommend taking Andy's advice and try to the links changed (I've followed him here for a while - he knows his stuff)
So this pop up - does it automatically populate the new URL when someone visits the page? So if someone is going to link to you and they go to copy your URL from their browser is it always with /#example because when they visit the page the pop up is there?
I could see that as potentially being an issue if that is the case.
-
Via opensite, when I put the URL (example.com/#example), it shows me the exact same reports as if I just put in example.com.
Does that mean the links are providing juice to the homepage?
Can anyone confirm this?
-
I suspect that the link juice from that won't pass down to the main page, but a check in Open Site Explorer or Webmaster Tools to see if it appear in your inbound links, but I have never seen an occasion where a popup has show up in SERPs, so I wouldn't expect links to a popup to be beneficial at all.
It would be better if you could ask for these links to be directed to your homepage really.

Andy,
If you take the URL and paste it into the browser bar, the homepage shows up, without the pop-up appearing.
-
Hi Brandon,
Are you able to post the link here, or send it over to me via PM?
What happens if you take this URL and just paste it into your browser bar? Does that page come up?

NoFollow tag for external links: Good or bad?
I have a few sites that have tens of thousands of links on them (most of them are sourcing images that happen to be external links). I know that it's a good thing to externally link to reputable sources, but is it smart to place the nofollow tag on ALL external links? I'm sure there is a good chance that external links from posts from years ago are pointing to sites that may now be penalized. I feel as though nofollowing all the external links could come off as unnatural. What are the pros and cons of placing the nofollow tag on ALL external links, and also if I leave it as is and don't put the nofollow tag on them. Thanks.

Should I Do a Social Bookmarking Campaign and a Tier 2 Linking?
I don't see anything bad in manually creating links on different (about 50) social bookmarking services. Is this method labeled as White Hat? I was wondering if it would be fine to create Tier 2 linking (probably blog comments) for indexing of the social bookmarking links? Please share your thoughts on the topic.

Link Building Plan Need some tips
Okay so I want to start focusing on SEO for my Web design company and I have been reading and reading and am now working on my off-page optimization and have some questions. My words are competitive words and a few of them are finally increasing to top 500 and a few in top 100. My current MozRank for my domain is 2.28, but my mozbar shows my homepage to be MozRank to be 3.35 Link Building Plan -Around 50 Directory submissions to high PR directories and high MozRank domains Free listings Paid Listings -3-5 articles written for guest posts Around 25 Local Business directories such as brownbook.net, whitepages, etc -Around 20 dofollow forum profile creation and backlinks from signatures -Squidioo Lens Creation( I will be creating high quality content related my website which would be web design, internet marketing, seo services.) -Hubpages Creation My question is should the content used on squidioo be 100% original, like can I post the content to other directories as well? -Article Directories Okay so from what I've read this is method doesn't really give much benefit with the recent updates, is this true or should I still at least submit some articles to article directories. I am also confused wouldn't distributing your articles to article directories be considered duplicate content? 20-25 Blog Comments on related blogs that support dofollow blog commenting, also will build some nofollow blog comment links for link diversity

Links from automated translations can damage the source?
I've a website dataprix.net composed by automated translations in diferent languages from original contents from another website, dataprix.com. Is good for dataprix.com to be linked by the contents of dataprix.net as the source of translated content, or could be considered by Google as a lot of low quality links and result on penalties for dataprix.com?

I've done some link building on my website... why is google showing this?
Hi guys, it seems Google is going crazy as always, basically sometimes i'm ranked first page sometimes i'm not there, not sure if it's because of my link building and Google is indexing the links. At the moment in IE i'm top 3-4 for this keyword however the Title tag is not what I set it to be it's basically taking the product name then adding something after it. (I know google sometimes changes to what they want if they feel its more relevant but it isn't in this case) Not sure if this is normal for my keyword to keep appearing then dissapearing in Google. I noticed in FF my keyword isn't there but in IE it is. I've logged out of my Google account deleted all history/cookies etc. Even checked on my friends computer. Hope this makes sense and i'm not going crazy!

Problems with link spam from spam blogs to competitor sites
A competitor of ours is having a great deal of success with links from spam blogs (such as: publicexperience.com or sexylizard.org) it is proving to be a nightmare. Google does not detect these (the competitor has been doing well now for over a year) and my boss is starting to think if you can’t beat them, join them. Frankly, he is right – we have built some great links but it is nigh on impossible to beat 400+ highly targeted spam links in a niche market. My question is, has anyone had success in getting this sort of stuff brought to the attention of Google and banned (I actually listed them all in a message in webmaster tools and sent them over to Google over a year ago!). This is frustrating, I do not want to join in this kind of rubbish but it is hard to put a convincing argument against it when our competitor has used the technique successfully for over a year without any penalty. Ideas? Thoughts? All help appreciated
