Redirects - How Best to do this ?
-
Hi
I am looking to close Website A which has many pages. I would like to keep the home page and add some great content to it with a link pointing to Website B. As for all the other pages excluding the home page , how is it best to approach them on Website A. Should I redirect them all to the home page of Website A which will tell Google thoose Pages are no longer needed and to prevent the visitors from seeing a 404?
My Main aim here is to not lose any visitors to Website A by sending them to Website B but also to hopefully pass any Page strength from Website A to Website B
Thanks
Adam

Kind of going back to where I believe Craig was heading... Even though the content will be very different will the products be the same or similar? Will 'Site B' be selling masks?
I think where Craig was going was - will there be pages on 'Site B' that would be relevant enough that you actually redirect 'Site A' pages over to 'Site B' pages rather than to the 'Site A' home page?
If I have misrepresented your line of thinking, Craig, I apologize.

I did this successfully in 2006 with http://www.wyko.co.uk and http://www.eriks.co.uk.
We set up a number of 301 redirects Permanent Redirects. Advertised on the homepage of the old, the new website.
I then sat back and watched the traffic diminish next to nothing on Google Analytics.
Once the site was getting a smaller number of hits on anything but the home page we transferred the domain to point to the new site as it is still today.
NB Make sure the GA code is above the redirect!

Hey Craig
Thanks for the reply
This is the Website www.maskheaven.co.uk , I plan to make the Home Page display good content about Masks with 1 link pointing to a landing page on another website.
The content will be taken from this page http://www.maskheaven.co.uk/history.html and http://www.maskheaven.co.uk/artmasquerade.html
No site B will not contain any of the content as seen on Mask Heaven (site A) Site B (undicided currently) will be a landing page to an ecommerce store with Products only / Product Descriptions
I hope that helps
Thanks
Adam

The answer is "it depends" because I don't have enough information to give a good answer.
For Site A - You are getting rid of some number N of content pages and replacing that with a smaller number of content pages and redesigning the home page. I have a number of questions about that:
1. Are you totally deleting the content, or are you consolidating the content onto larger, more comprehensive content pages?
- Example: Today you have pages for [Great things about Red Shoes] [Tips on tying your Yellow Shoes] [The buying guide to Blue Shoes]. Are you replacing that with [The Comprehensive Guide to everything you need to know about wearing, tying and buying any color shoe]?
2. You mention Site B. Is Site B going to contain all of the content that was on Site A, or is it getting totally new content, but in the same subject area?

301 Redirects
Looking for the best way to do the following. Business has changed its name, and has also become a corporate store. The old domain name is now no longer needed as a website page has been created inside the main corporate site. Obviously i dont want to loose all the traffic that we had and want to redirect them but there is a problem, that im unable to redirect the old domain to the new one due to office 365 installed on the hosting platform, and the old emails will need to run for another 6 months. I can remove the old site and put a landing page up, but i still need to redirect all the pages to the new site, and there is approx 50+ of them. My main question is i currently have atleast 50+ redirects already in there due to seo changes over the years, some would go back atleast 5 years, whats a safe amount of time that i can remove the older redirects And am i going about this the right way so i dont loose all the hard work on rankings etc

How can I best handle parameters?
Thank you for your help in advance! I've read a ton of posts on this forum on this subject and while they've been super helpful I still don't feel entirely confident in what the right approach I should take it. Forgive my very obvious noob questions - I'm still learning! The problem: I am launching a site (coursereport.com) which will feature a directory of schools. The directory can be filtered by a handful of fields listed below. The URL for the schools directory will be coursereport.com/schools. The directory can be filtered by a number of fields listed here: Focus (ex: “Data Science”) Cost (ex: “$<5000”) City (ex: “Chicago”) State/Province (ex: “Illinois”) Country (ex: “Canada”) When a filter is applied to the directories page the CMS produces a new page with URLs like these: coursereport.com/schools?focus=datascience&cost=$<5000&city=chicago coursereport.com/schools?cost=$>5000&city=buffalo&state=newyork My questions: 1) Is the above parameter-based approach appropriate? I’ve seen other directory sites that take a different approach (below) that would transform my examples into more “normal” urls. coursereport.com/schools?focus=datascience&cost=$<5000&city=chicago VERSUS coursereport.com/schools/focus/datascience/cost/$<5000/city/chicago (no params at all) 2) Assuming I use either approach above isn't it likely that I will have duplicative content issues? Each filter does change on page content but there could be instance where 2 different URLs with different filters applied could produce identical content (ex: focus=datascience&city=chicago OR focus=datascience&state=illinois). Do I need to specify a canonical URL to solve for that case? I understand at a high level how rel=canonical works, but I am having a hard time wrapping my head around what versions of the filtered results ought to be specified as the preferred versions. For example, would I just take all of the /schools?focus=X combinations and call that the canonical version within any filtered page that contained other additional parameters like cost or city? Should I be changing page titles for the unique filtered URLs? I read through a few google resources to try to better understand the how to best configure url params via webmaster tools. Is my best bet just to follow the advice on the article below and define the rules for each parameter there and not worry about using rel=canonical ? https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/1235687 An assortment of the other stuff I’ve read for reference: http://www.wordtracker.com/academy/seo-clean-urls http://www.practicalecommerce.com/articles/3857-SEO-When-Product-Facets-and-Filters-Fail http://www.searchenginejournal.com/five-steps-to-seo-friendly-site-url-structure/59813/ http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2011/07/improved-handling-of-urls-with.html

Magento Redirect Loop
On my clients site I changed the URL structure for products. First they had a trailing slash: http://www.wellamy.com/market/food/oklahoma-relief-effort/healthy-snacks/caramel-apple-chewy-snack-bars/ I changed it to end in .html http://www.wellamy.com/market/food/oklahoma-relief-effort/healthy-snacks/caramel-apple-chewy-snack-bars.html Now rather than redirecting properly, it causes a redirect loop. Any idea how I can fix this?

Will a 303 redirect hurt us?
Our membership based website is using a 303 redirect to handle the redirection of users back to the login page when those users try to access a page behind the logged in firewall. Said another way, if a user is not yet logged in, we redirect them to the login page using a 303 redirection. Unfortunately, Googlebot get this redirection too and after a recent audit, we're thinking this isn't the best way to handle this. For pages which require a user to login first, should we: A) index and 303 redirect to the login page (what we are currently doing) B) index and 302 redirect to the login page C) noindex those pages D) Remove any special treatment and let Google figure it out. Thanks in advance for your help! David

301 Redirect Questions
I have a site I built on a wisiwig editing platform that will not allow a 301 redirect. The site has already been remade and I need to point it to another domain. To do the redirect, can I change it to another domain host that will allow a 301 or will that make me loose the authority of the site? I may not be able to move the content of the site. Please help.
