Magento Category URL
-
Hello I do SEO consulting and a client launch a new Magento Enterprise site.
My question is they changed a URL from /category-list/ to /category/ and it is 301 redirecting correctly but the links off of that URL are not. Example:
www.site.com/category/ if you click a link the next one shows up like this:
www.site.com/categorty-list/vendor/ for example.
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks

Hey There - I too am not very familiar with "under the hood" of Maganto. Sounds like you may need to do individual redirects / URL re-writes. I'm not sure if there is a way to do it automatically. Here are a few reousrces that might help;
- http://blog.maximusbusiness.com/2012/10/magento-url-rewriting-regex-and-301-redirects-tips/
If you can't find it there, please circle back so I can send the question to another Moz Associate who might have more of a working knowledge with Magento
Thanks!

Hi-
I am relatively new to Magento, so my advice may be limited, but have you tried checking the Magento URL rewrites? Magento creates its own rewrites which you can fund under Catalog/URL Rewrite Management. You can look there for the "bad" URLS and take them out/redirect them.
Good Luck
Ken

What to do with internal spam url's google indexed?
I am in SEO for years but never met this problem. I have client who's web page was hacked and there was posted many, hundreds of links, These links has been indexed by google. Actually these links are not in comments but normal external urls's. See picture. What is the best way to remove them? use google disavow tool or just redirect them to some page? The web page is new, but ranks good on google and has domain authority 24. I think that these spam url's improved rankings too 🙂 What would be the best strategy to solve this. Thanks. k9Bviox

Whether letting an old category just 404 out is OK
Hello, We've got some hidden categories that are still indexed in the search engines. If there are no links to these hidden categories, can we just let them 404 out and be OK SEO wise? We can't 301 redirect them. It's about 50 categories.

Is it still valuable to place content in subdirectories to represent hierarchy or is it better to have every URL off the root?
Is it still valuable to place content in subdirectories to represent hierarchy on the site or is it better to have every URL off the root? I have seen websites structured both ways. It seems having everything off the root would dilute the value associated with pages closest to the homepage. Also, from a user perspective, I see the value in a visual hierarchy in the URL.

Include placename in URL, or not?
Hi Mozzers, I'm wondering whether to put placename in URL or not. This is for a hotel so it's very focused on the county. I have loads of sub pages along the lines of www.hotelname.com/short-breaks-somerset www.hotelname.com/eat-out-somerset and so on but I was wondering whether that placename element would help or hinder. For example, may want to rank for short breaks in other searches (not just those seeking short breaks in Somerset) and was wondering whether the somerset bit may actually hinder this in the future. Also noticed Somerset is mentioned in nearly all of the page urls through the site. Perhaps this is a bit spammy and just not neccesary. I can include the address of the hotel on every page anyway. What do you think? Thanks in advance for your help 🙂 Luke

How much pain can I expect if I change the URL structure of the site again?
About 3 months ago I implemented a massive URL structure change by 'upgrading' some of the features of our CMS Prior to this URL's for catergorys and products looked something like this http://www.thefurnituremarket.co.uk/proddetail.asp?prod=OX09 I made a few changes but din't implement it fully as I felt it would be better to do it instages as the site was getting indexed more thouroughly. HOWEVER... We have just hit the first page for some key SERP's and I am wary to rock the boat again by changing the URL structures again and all the sitemaps. How much pain do you think we could feel if i went ahead and optimised the URL's fully? and What would you do? 🙂
