Tag Manager & Universal Analytics Code - Do you need both?
-
Hi Mozzers
I've created a container for a domain in Google Tag Manager. Within that container I've created a tag for universal analytics with track type "Page view" and the firing rule "all pages".
Can I then replace the Universal Analytics code with the tag manager code? Would it still track all the normal data in Google Analytics?
There are no events setup up yet so that's not a concern but there are goals setup tracking which are triggered by a page view. Would they be affected?
Thanks
Anthony

Yeh that's the same tag I create

I'm not sure I just know from experience. The first tag I create when I make a container for a new site:
Name: Page Views
Tag Type: Universal AnalyticsThen i set the tracking id there.
It gets the all pages firing rule and then since I use WP for a platform I also create blocking rules to eliminate admin and login views./e I should be more clear and say that it does not replace but the two tags will both be present it's just that the tag manager code snippet you maybe pasted right over the old analytics one now inserts any required analytics code for you.

Thanks Mark - appreciate that answer.
The firing rules are set to all pages.
I'm amazed that I couldn't find this simple answer in the Google documentation. Unless I've missed it and you can direct me to where it says tag manager code replaces the universal analytics code?
-
Yes you can remove the original Ga code in exchange for the tag manager container code and it will handle the rest.
Your goals will not be affected as long as you have your firing rules correct in tag manager.
Highly recommend the Chrome Extension Google Tag Assistant to make sure you get things the way you would like.

Tracking in Google Analytics
My site has just recently (or maybe not so recently...) had a great deal of https URL's indexed (I was really only able to find this out thanks to the recent update to the GWT Index Status). It appears that Googlebot picked up an ssl somewhere (I already know where) on my site and then proceeded to crawl and index pages with https rather than http. Since I understand the issue, it should be an easy fix. My question is, does Google Analytics support (track) both http AND https for one site, or would I need to set up two different tracking codes for http and https? I figured that I might as well grab some data from the https pages that are indexed before I try and remove them. I've done a little research on using Groupings/Groups but I figured I would reach out to the MOZ community to see if anyone else has worked with a similar issue. Thanks!

Google Analytics Not Tracking 100% of Visits?
Hi all, We're having an issue with Analytics where we are getting different figures from what Silver Pop are saying. For example email campaign A sent via Silver Pop, with Google Analytics tracking code show's 50 unique clicks in Silver Pop. Looking at Google Analytics there are only 10 visits from that campaign. So I thought it could be something with the tracking, but there wasn't a significant rise in web visits = either Google Analytics is not recording visits properly or Silver Pop figures are wrong. I'm more inclined to think that it's something to do with Google Analytics. Has anyone come across something similar? Where one system is showing you X amount of visits but the figures on Google Analytics don't add up? A few quick things already covered: Double checked the links have been tracked properly, but this doesn't explain the low increase in web visits generally We've double checked that Google Analytics tracking code is properly installed (and it is / was at the time of send). Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks guys.

Analytics oddity
This one has me a bit puzzled... I was just conducting a bit of routine analysis on a client's site, when I noticed avg. traffic doubled on one particular day. Now, this was easy to spot, since avg daily traffic for this site is 100 per day. The site also has approximately 100 pages of content. Here is the odd part... the spike was clearly attributed to Direct traffic and from a specific network in Palo Alto. The Bounce Rate was 100% and it appears that every page on the site was visited - very briefly. Any clues as to what may have triggered this? A competitor maybe? An unkown bot? I am looking forward to your thoughts.

Regular Expressions in Google Analytics
I want to use the Google Analytics landing page reports to look at the bounce rate of top level pages excluding the homepage. So pages with urls: www.example.com/example Does anyone know a regular expression that will allow me to do this? Just to clarify I do not want to look at the bounce rate of the homepage or any pages deeper than www.example.com/example e.g: www.example.com/example/example www.example.com/example/example/example etc Thanks in advance
