How many websites in Google Serps
-
Let say you are an electrician. You have a website in Google Serps
After much deliberation you realise that the current domain name is giving the wrong signals to your potential customers. So you decide to rebrand to a new domain name. The new domain will have fresh content (no duplication).
Question
Can you have both instances live in Google Serps and eventually retire the current website via a 301 redirect to the new domain. Thanks Mark
-
Hi Mark,
If there is zero relationship of data between the old site and the new one (such as you've described) you should likely be okay. Regarding blocking bots from crawling the new site until it is ready, this falls a bit outside my area. I expect you could set up the robots.txt file for this, but I recommend starting a new question on this topic to get expert advice from our technical SEO experts. You have to be sure to do this correctly to avoid problems. Hope this helps.

Hi Miriam,
Thank you for the advice.
I understand the consequences of Google seeing both live sites and same NAP information. I have a few additional question.
Additional Questions Is there a way to stop Google crawling the new work in development site?
If I do not associate the new work in development site with any NAP information, i.e, info on website, directories, Google Places, etc. will this still effect me?
Thanks Mark

Hi Mark,
It sounds like you've determined that re-branding is essential for your business. As we're talking about a local business, I'm going to recommend against having 2 live websites at the same time. Here's why. You local rankings depend on the consistency of your NAP+ W (name, address, phone + website). Should Google begin to see 2 URLs associated with your any part of your business data, they may lose trust in what they've gathered about your business and you may lose rankings because of this.
If you're going to re-brand, I recommend rolling it all out at once and then undertaking the major work of citation cleanup. If this isn't something you've previously handled, I strongly recommend that you consider hiring a professional outfit for this task to ensure that all possible mentions of your NAP have been brought into compliance with the new information. WhiteSpark is a good company for such work and I believe Moz members may get a discount for signing up with Whitespark's citation services.
Hope this opinion is helpful to you.

Hi Andy,
Thanks again for all you help. I agree more user input here is needed.
I welcome additional community users to contribute.

You are correct Mark, and this is where link networks come from.
However, I can't see any area of what you are trying to do as being a major issue but perhaps someone else who has been in just this situation would like to chip in? I personally would just go ahead and launch the new site, but as I can see a few differences in your situation and my own, perhaps a few precautions would be a good bet.

Hi Andy,
My new site will be the daddy of all sites. It will provide feature rich content, an A-Z of information, and all things relevant.
My plans are to work towards being an authority and reference point in addition to provide a service.I would like to run both site together for about 6 months. My current old site will be my bread & butter.
Why 6 **Months?**Initially, like all new sites there will be no seo value. When customers send quote requests and ring, I would like to give them an opportunity to see the new site. This will be my way to see how effectively they are able to navigate, add or tweak relevant information, etc.
During the 6 months, customer experience will be key towards perfecting the site based on user site experience and human conversations.
Additionally, with social engagement via the new site, I will be able to gain backlinks from users sharing valuable feature rich content. Upon such time in the 6 month windows, should the new site overtake the old in SERPS then i will make the switch.
Make the Switch: 301 redirect my old site to the new site. Pass all things goods from the old to new.
Concerns I had read a while ago that having more than 1 site in SERPS within the same trading area is a violation of Google policy.
Put simply, anyone with seo knowledge or deep pockets can create untold websites to manipulate SERPS.Thanks Mark

I could have sworn I replied to this Mark. My apologies.
From what you say, this sounds like an ideal candidate for a rebrand and there is no problem with having both domains live. Neither is going to be duplicating the other so there will be no problem. As I said, I have 8 currently and Google pretty much loves them all. Unique content throughout.
How long are you thinking before retiring the old site? Will you be relying on that in the SERPs for the time being? You could always noindex the whole site if you wanted Google to stop using it but still be there for people when they land?

Hi All,
I welcome more information on this subject.
Thanks Mark
-
Hi Andy,
No issues with content.
Current domain name does not represent size of company, portfolio of services or potential market. Rebranding would simply provide greater opportunities and customers. Thanks Mark
-
Hi Mark,
Can I ask if it is the domain name that is causing problems, or the content? Unless there is a real need to rebrand, I would look to explore other possibilities before jumping into a new domain - unless a rebrand is what you really want.
Edit- I forgot to add that there is no problem having a second site in Google either. I have 8 in total, because I use a single page design, and have no issues at all.

Is CTR that important? SERP Questions (ADVICES for a case study)
My website is gabseo.ca Lately I have been following keywords my town in Canada from Mexico and I have the impression that the Google updates the SERP almost every hours for my target keyword. It is possible that the CTR on the SERP can be that powerful? Sometimes I am number 1 for "SEO Gatineau" for example and overnight I am #9 or #10, the next day I am #3... Is there another way that I can test the search result? Whn you try this query, what do you see? It started happening this week and coincidentally I didn't publish any blog articles this week... is it related? I am stressing out right now because my agency is a startup. So how can I beat the other agencies if I don't have a good CTR? I know that I will do a casestudy about this! Any comments, ideas?

Local SEO Website Structure.
Hi everyone, This might be quite a long post so please bear with me. I am currently rebuilding my website. My previous website was built by a web designer and was very basic. 5 page html site consisting of home, services, gallery, testimonials, contact pages. None of them were great - thin content, not optimised as well as could be - no h1's etc. To be fair I knew nothing about websites and didn't bother much with the site. As a new business I used it simply as a place for people to visit for more information after receiving a leaflet and never bothered much about driving traffic to the site. A few years down the line and I have realised I need the website to be working for me as opposed to alongside me. I am building it myself via wordpress as web designer didn't want to work in wordpress. I have done my keyword research and I'm working on pages as we speak. Previously my homepage - around 80% of visitors landed here for my main keyword (driveway cleaning glasgow) as it was number 6 in the organic listing. With my services page appearing directly underneath in 7 for the same keyword. I have starting building a new page for that keyword which contains (driveway-cleaning-glasgow) in the url. I have 301'd my previous services page to this url. Now for my questions...
Local SEO | | sfrediktru8
My 2nd keyword based on volume is driveway cleaning. How do I optimise for this or will the (driveway-cleaning-glasgow) page rank for this also as the words are contained within this page? I plan on having the same structure for the remaining services - pressure-washing-glasgow, monoblock-cleaning-glasgow etc, etc. As I am building new pages for each service with location built in, where does this leave my homepage? Should I be targeting keywords for this page? It is still my strongest page and apart from the (driveway-cleaning-glasgow) page which will get some help from the 301 these are all new pages so I would expect perhaps initially to lose some traffic. But as I am not ranking well for anything other than the main 2 keywords mentioned above it can only be beneficial long term when google recognises the specific pages for each service. And when I start using Adwords I will have a specific landing page for each service. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks0 -

Google's Geo Search Setting Gone Cuckoo!
Hey Everybody! I thought I'd post about this because pretty much all of our members who do Local SEO are bound to run into this. Last week, when I was in the middle of training someone, I ran into something bizarre. Using Google's search settings to set my location to a remote locale, the local packs were returning me results for the correct city, but the organic results accompanying the pack were showing me results that appeared to be based on my own IP address instead ... in other words, Google was overriding my designated geolocation in favor of where it knows I'm actually located. I was relieved to see Mike Blumenthal post on this (helped me realize I wasn't going crazy - haha) and I recommend that everyone who does Local for a living take a look: http://blumenthals.com/blog/2015/05/24/google-location-results-still-screwy/ I also recommend checking out this G+ convo going on between John Mueller and others: https://plus.google.com/u/0/+TerrySimmonds/posts/1BZ6guvy9mE John's initial thought was that nothing has changed ... but something has definitely changed. Do some of your own searches and see what you come up with. Main takeaway here is that if you are trying to approximate clients' rankings in cities not your own, the results you are seeing may be very weird right now. Not sure if this is a temporary glitch or the forerunner to some change coming our way. This is a story to stay on top of, for sure. What do you you all see?

Has anyone any experience of Google pulling through random meta descriptions.
If you search "venn digital" then the correct meta description is pulled through, but if you search "venndigital" then it pulls through our twitter feed from the bottom of the page. My only suggestion is that it is doing it because there is no mention of " Venn Digital" in the body of the copy, so it is going to the twitter feed at the bottom of the page where Venn Digital is mentioned to pull this info through.

Showing a preferred Google location in branded search for a multi-location business?
Background: A business has 5 brick and mortar locations, in 5 different states, with 5 separate Google+ profiles. The corporate headquarters are in Michigan. The Michigan Google+ Local profile is the one that should be most closely associated with the brand. Problem: We want the Michigan Google + Local page to show up for branded searches nationwide: right now, it only shows up on geolocated searches in Michigan. Of course, it totally makes sense that the other 4 Google+ local pages will appear for users searching with IP locations (or logged in locations) near those states. But for other states - is there a way to help Google understand or give preference to the main corporate location? What we're trying to prevent is someone in New York City searching for "company name", and then seeing a lesser location appear in SERPs associated with the brand, instead of our favored Michican location. Ideas so far: Continue to enhance out the Michigan location's Google+ page (check categories, photos, description, share content frequently, expand circles, get reviews, yada yada yada - we've already done much of this). _Maybe give this page more attention and content than other locations if we have to? _ Build links into Michigan Google+ page? Ensure general citations are up to date - use localeze/moz local etc. Website - We have a page for each location. While Michigan is featured, we also do promote our other offices as well - all kinda promoted equally on site in terms of metadata, content, etc. Any other brainstorming advice or out-of-the-box (oh no, did I just say "out-of-the-box"?) ideas to help Google associate the Michigan location as our "primary" one we want shown on more generic branded searches, even though of course the other 4 are impt too? Tricky...

Have you heard of any white hat methods for influencing Google's auto suggest/auto complete?
We have a client who has a "friend" who says he can get keyword phrases that include their business name to show up in Google's auto suggest when doing a search. We have not heard much about this and are skeptical to these claims as we know how Google comes up with these suggested keyword phrases. Wondering if anyone in the community heard much about tactics to influence auto suggest/auto complete and would like to know your opinion about it.
