Disadvantages of linking to uncompressed images?
-
Images are compressed and resized to fit into an article, but each image in the article links to the original file - which in some cases is around 5Mb. The large versions of the images are indexed in Google.
Does this decrease the website's crawl budget due to the time spent downloading the large files?
Does link equity disappear through the image links?
Either way I don't think it's a very good user experience if people click on the article images to see the large images - there's no reason for the images to be so large.
Any other thoughts?
Thanks.

Both very useful answers - thanks.

The biggest point here to me, Alex, relates to your last sentence. There is absolutely no reason to ever have a 5 MB on a website in the first place unless you are expressly providing high-rez images for printing.
The downsides are so many that they actually dwarf the SEO implications
- most importantly, they make for massive backup files, which become unwieldy and prone to timeout failures when being generated or restored.
- you run the significant risk of unauthorised use of the images, since they are big enough to print from.
- you waste bandwidth and resources uploading such large files, and displaying them should users click on them
- you create a horrible user experience should any user accidentally click on them, especially if they're unfortunate enough to be on mobile.
As far as SEO goes, I honestly don't know the effect of such large images on crawlability. We know Google does process images (to power things like reverse image search) but I strongly suspect they would just skip that for such large images. They are predominant;y using meta-data and any captions/associated text for image indexing purposes.
As far as link equity - yup, those links to the larger image will take link equity with them just like any other link on the page. In addition, depending on the CMS configuration, those links may be going to attachment pages holding the images. (WordPress is famous for this problem by default.) They will look to the search crawlers like additional pages to be indexed, but since they're just images, they can look like thin content, and also are a major waste of crawl budget.
If this is a WordPress site, there are a number of plugins that can deal with the over-sized images in an automated way. Otherwise you can pull them down into Photoshop and use its automated batch processing to deal with them, then re-upload them.
Hope that helps?

Alex,
I love this kind of question probably because it's the kind that gets in my head and I cannot get rid of. In the scheme of things SEO it is likely small, but it's the small rock in the shoe.
My opinion is more around your use of a compressed image even though it links to the larger image, probably means you are ok on load time and indexing. Part of my thinking has to do with many real estate sites that have huge volumes of photo images. Most of them have the ability to load the larger image and some of them (especially on sites where higher end RE companies are using high quality photographers) get fairly large. I know for a fact these sites are not being hurt on any appreciable level.
Hope that helps. I realize it is not definitive.

Google image search
How does google decide which image show up in the image search section ? Is is based on the alt tag of the image or is google able to detect what is image is about using neural nets ? If it is using neural nets are the images you put on your website taken into account to rank a page ? Let's say I do walking tours in Italy and put a picture of the leaning tower of pisa as a top image while I be penalised because even though the picture is in italy, you don't see anyone walking ? Thank you,

Link Spring Clean
Hey, Based on the most up to date thinking - what's the best way to approach a link spring clean? We've got a site with a large amount of links (a few of which look a bit spammy - SEO directories etc) Also, the brand changed it's name and URL a while back so there are directory/web citations using the old URL and sometimes the old name. The old URL is 301'd but I'm thinking (especially in terms of local SEO) these citations with differnt business names/numbers/web addresses could be particularly harmful? Cheers!

Would it be wise to reupload my sites images (100 in total) as I cannot rename the files on my wordpress site but it does allow me to add alt text , captions etc?Or just add the data i can to the images allready on the site? Would it be worthwhile in terms of search and pagerank?0 -
OSE link report showing links to 404 pages on my site
I did a link analysis on this site mormonwiki.com. And many of the pages shown to be linked to were pages like these http://www.mormonwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Planning_a_trip_to_Rome_By_using_Movie_theatre_-_Your_five_Fun_Shows2052752 There happens to be thousands of them and these pages actually no longer exist but the links to them obviously still do. I am planning to proceed by disavowing these links to the pages that don't exist. Does anyone see any reason to not do this, or that doing this would be unnecessary? Another issue is that Google is not really crawling this site, in WMT they are reporting to have not crawled a single URL on the site. Does anyone think the above issue would have something to do with this? And/or would you have any insight on how to remedy it?

First Link on Page Still Only Link on Page?
Bruce Clay and others did some research and found that the first link on the page is the most important and what is accredited as the link. Any other links on the page mean nothing. Is this still true? And in that case, on an ecommerce site with category links in the top navigation (which is high on the code), is it not useful to link to categories in the content of the page? Because the category is already linked to on that page. Thank you, Tyler

Internal linking between categories
Is it necessary to do internal links between the same categories of a website ( Let's say Ihave a category about shoes and in the category I have a page about boots and one about sandals ( should the page boots be accessible from the page sandals and the other way round or is the back button going back to the section shoes enough ) ? If internal links between the same category ( sandals to boots ) are needed/recommended is it also a good practice to do site wide links between categories ( shoes and and bags for example ) Because by reading google recommendations "Make a site with a clear hierarchy and text links. Every page should be reachable from at least one static text link" I am not sure if they are talking about breadcrumbs or text links i am kind of lost ... Thank you,

Client participated in Link farm.
Our client participated in link exchange activity between 2008-2009. The service they used was http://link2me.com/ Its an obvious link farm scheme and their drop in traffic/rankings correlates to panda release early this year. The site does have tons of unique content, their are no technical SEO issues. They DO have great inbound links from some very authoritative sites (ie: peta.org) They do not rank even for unique strings taken directly from their content. Rankings for some very n long tail terms are virtually non existant. So the question were trying to figure out is, did the domain get hit with a penalty bc of past link farm participation, if so how can we correct? -- killing the account with link2me has already been done Could the domain NOT be penalized, and since all those external links were penalized did our site lose authority?

Image Links Vs. Text Links, Questions About PR & Anchor Text Value
I am searching for testing results to find out the value of text links versus image links with alt text. Do any of you have testing results that can answer or discuss these questions? If 2 separate pages on the same domain were to have the same Page Authority, same amount of internal and external links and virtually carry the same strength and the location of the image or text link is in the same spot on both pages, in the middle of the body within paragraphs. Would an image link with alt text pass the same amount of Page Authority and PR as a text link? Would an image link with alt text pass the same amount of textual value as a text link? For example, if the alt text on the image on one page said "nike shoes" and the text link on the other page said "nike shoes" would both pass the same value to drive up the rankings of the page for "nike shoes"? Would a link wrapped around an image and text phrase be better than creating 2 links, one around the image and one around the text pointing to the same page? The following questions have to do with when you have an image and text link on a page right next to each other, like when you link a compelling graphic image to a category page and then list a text link underneath it to pass text link value to the linked-to page. If the image link displays before the text link pointing to a page, would first link priority use the alt text and not even apply the anchor text phrase to the linked page? Would it be best to link the image and text phrase together pointing to the product page to decrease the link count on the page, thus allowing for more page rank and page authority to pass to other pages that are being linked to on the page? And would this also pass anchor text value to the link-to page since the link would include an image and text? I know that the questions sound a bit repetitive, so please let me know if you need any further clarification. I'd like to solve these to further look into ways to improve some user experience aspects while optimizing the link strength on each page at the same time. Thanks!
