Which is better /section/ or section/index.php?
-
I have noticed that Google has started to simply link to /section/ as opposed to /section/index.php and I haven't changed any canonical tags etc.
I have looked at my pages moz authority for the two /section/ = 28/100
/section/index.php = 42/100How would I go about transferring the authority to /section/ from /section/index.php to hopefully help me in my organic serp positions etc.
Any insight would be great

Would it be possible to do a redirect from /section/index.php to just /section/ without causing a completely pointless infinite loop etc....

Cheers guys

What Dave said.
/index.php, .html, .htm, .asp, et al, are all pretty much outdated now. Not in the way that the pages wont get spidered and indexed, but URL's are certainly much cleaner when they are like this page, for example:
http://moz.com/community/q/which-is-better-section-or-section-index-php
Looks much better than http://moz.com/community/q/which-is-better-section-or-section-index-php/index.php

I constantly look for ways in which to make a difference on the sites I have.
As a rule of thumb, so long as your old inbound links still resolve to the correct place with 301 redirects and there are no old links physically linking to the 301s on your site then you'll be onto a winner.

Cheers Dave, would you potentially recommend reworking the sites link infrastructure to point to /section/ as opposed to /section/index.php? or would it not likely make much of a differance? Thanks for the prompt response.

Tim,
Google works on relevance as you probably know, index.asp has no relevance to the page content what so ever and therefore section/ would be more preferable to Google and a larger majority of your URL will be made up with your keywords.

Dave

SEO and Indexing via a Document Reader
My questions are in regards to Google being able to index PDF's and Images that are viewed from a document reader. The website offers visitors that login to view a variety of documents including PDFs and images. Will Google be able to find and index these documents so they can show up in search results? Will the PDFs show up in search results and will the images show up in search results? Will Google be able to find and index these documents so they can show up in search results? Will the PDFs show up in search results and will the images show up in search results? Will the PDFs show up in search results and will the images show up in search results? How does the document reader affect the SEO of the website? How does the login affect the SEO of the website? Thank you, Joey

Google does not index image sitemap
Hi, we put an image sitemap in the searchconsole/webmastertools http://www.sillasdepaseo.es/sillasdepaseo/sitemap-images.xml it contains only the indexed products and all images on the pages. We also claimed the CDN in the searchconsole http://media.sillasdepaseo.es/ It has been 2 weeks now, Google indexes the pages, but not the images. What can we do? Thanks in advance. Dieter Lang

No Index Question
Hello, We are attempting to have the following page removed from Google search results: view-source:http://www.mndaily.com/1998/04/08/missing-student-has-disappeared A noindex tag was added but we aren't sure if it was done correctly. Â I'm wondering if there are any experts here that might be able to confirm that this was added correctly and will result in the removal of the page from search results. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Canonical or No-index
Just a quick question really. Say I have a Promotions page where I list all current promotions for a product, and update it regularly to reflect the latest offer codes etc. On top of that I have Offer announcement posts for specific promotions for that product, highlighting very briefly the promotion, but also linking back to the main product promotion page which has a the promotion duplicated. Â So main page is 1000+ words with half a dozen promotions, the small post might be 200 words, and quickly become irrelevant as it is a limited time news article. Now, I don't want the promotion page indexed (unless it has a larger news story attached to the promotion, but for this purpose presume it is doesn't). Â Initially the core essence of the post will be duplicated in the main Promotion page, but later as the offer expires it wouldn't be. Â Therefore would you Rel Canonical or just simply No-index?

[wtf] Mysterious Homepage De-Indexing
Our homepage, as well as several similar landing pages, have vanished from the index. Could you guys review the below pages to make sure I'm not missing something really obvious?! URLs: http://www.grammarly.com http://www.grammarly.com/plagiarism-checker It's been four days, so it's not just a temporary fluctuation The pages don't have a "noindex" tag on them and aren't being excluded in our robots.txt There's no notification about a penalty in WMT Clues: WMT is returning an "HTTP 200 OK" for Fetch, is showing a redirect to grammarly.com/1 (alternate version of homepage, contains rel=canonical back to homepage) for Fetch+Render. Could this be causing a circular redirect? Some pages on our domain are ranking fine, e.g. https://www.google.com/search?q=grammarly+answers A month ago, we redesigned the pages in question. The new versions are pretty script-heavy, as you can see. We don't have a sitemap set up yet. Any ideas? Thanks in advance, friends!

Followup question to rand(om) question: Would two different versions (mobile/desktop) on the same URL work well from an SEO perspective and provide a better overall end-user experience?
We read today's rand(om) question on responsive design. This is a topic we have been thinking about and ultimately landing on a different solution. Our opinion is the best user experience is two version (desktop and mobile) that live on one URL. For example, a non-mobile visitor that visits http://www.tripadvisor.com/ will see the desktop (non-responsive) version. However, if a mobile visitor (i.e. iOS) visits the same URL they will see a mobile version of the site, but it is still on the same URL There is not a separate subdomain or URL - instead the page dynamically changes based on the end user's user agent. It looks like they are accomplishing this by using javascript to change the physical layout of the page to match the user's device. This is what we are considering doing for our site. It seems this would simultaneously solve the problems mentioned in the rand(om) question and provide an even better user experience. By using this method, we can create a truly mobile version of the website that is similar to an app. Unfortunately, mobile versions and desktop users have very different expectations and behaviors while interacting with a webpage. I'm interested to hear the negative side of developing two versions of the site and using javascript to serve the "right" version on the same URL. Thanks for your time!
