Wordpress Custom Permalinks Plugin Issue
-
Hello,
I installed this plugin and I'm having trouble making it work. I'm new to WordPress so was hoping someone can help me out.
I'm looking to set up the following pages for example
http://testsite.azurewebsites.net/Services/Services1
http://testsite.azurewebsites.net/Services/Services2I do the following steps
- Add New Page
- Enter the following title "Services1"
- Enter the following text in the Permalink textbox "Services/Services1" replacing the default text "?page_id=140"
- Then I publish the page.
- This automatically updates the "Custom Fields" section below. The name is set to "custom_permalink" and the value is set to "Services/Services1".
- Then I "view page" but get a 404 error. The url is "http://testsite.azurewebsites.net/Services/Services1"
Some additional info
- 1. WordPress version 9.8.3
- Settings - Permalinks is set to "post name"
- Custom Permalinks version 0.7.18
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
-
Thanks Marty,
Worked perfectly
-
It should work with posts, pages, custom post types, etc without needing that plugin.
Good luck!
-
Thanks again Marty,
I've a couple of questions before I go ahead and implement those changes.
- Will this work for pages and not just blog posts? I'm more concerned about the pages right now.
- Also will I just be able to use the Permalinks section in Settings or will I need to install the Custom Permalinks plugin to be able to produce page urls such as
companyname/services/oracle/admin
companyname/services/oracle/dev
companyname/services/SAP/admin
Thanks again for all your help. I really appreciate it

I don't host my WordPress sites on IIS but according to their site, you have three choices for custom permalinks on IIS-
Microsoft IIS 7+ web server with the URL Rewrite 1.1+ module and PHP 5 running as FastCGI
Microsoft IIS 6+ using ASAPI_Rewrite (free for single-site server, $$ for multi-site server)
Microsoft IIS 6+ using Ionic ISAPI Rewriting Filter (IIRF) (free for single-site or multi-site server)I got the above from this page.

Hi Marty,
Back again. I've been working on this issue again this morning and now have admin access. A few new things have been discovered. This site is running on Azure and IIS so it seems that the .htaccess file is not needed but instead uses the web.config instead. I've tried updating that per this article but it still doesn't work. I think this might be more for blogs though rather than the plugin I've tried.
Any thoughts?
Thanks
-
Hi Marty,
Thanks for your response. I've passed this over to our admin for him to check. I'll post again pending the result from that.

Is your .htaccess file writeable by the server? If not your permalink (and plugin) settings won't work.

E-commerce customer registration fields during account sign up
I work for an online print company and recently we were considering adding a field titled "industry" so that we could figure out what industry our customers are coming from. Has anyone seen anything either in favor or against adding this field during the customers account registration process. We understand that less is best however feel that it is important to better serve our customers. Any information on this subject would be very useful.

Are wordpress themes like from themeforest bad?
Hi to all. Ok so as I read around the internet I see a lot of people who dislike theme forest and using their themes. I have a them from them, the Avada theme. Ok so they have made a TON of money. But would so many people buy the theme if it was that bad? Going forward, my question is, are wordpress themes a bad thing to do? I feel like its peer pressure to switch to a framework like Genesis. There are so many people who state that a framework and child theme is the way to go. But I am using this avada theme and having under 2.5 sec load times. A lot of people say the code is bloated and is horrible. I understand this and got a cache plugin that makes a huge difference. But I do want to learn and I do want to approach websites in a positive way. So if you have any thoughts on themes, please tell me your thoughts. I am no developer, so they seem to work, but is it at a price? Like bad seo and serps? Thank you chris

‘80-90% of SEO already done for you in Wordpress’ Am I missing something?
Hi there, I’m looking for some feedback on a statement made on my Facebook Page re Wordpress and SEO. Please understand I wouldn’t class myself as an expert but I am competent and achieve satisfactory results for clients, more so since becoming a SEOmoz Pro user, I’ve just had some great results for a client using SEOmoz guidelines in ‘On Page SEO Reports’ thank you very much! A comment however made on my FB page has got my interest…. “as you (kn)no(w) google loves WP and will get listed quicker as 80 to 90% of your SEO is already done” Does Wordpress (or Joomla for that matter mentioned in the same conversation) have some SEO advantages that Google loves as the poster would have me believe, can I save time and effort working in word press from an SEO point of view? I use the age old techniques of targeting key phrases and words and distributing them accordingly. Creating internal link structures with ‘key worded anchor text’ etc before embarking on any off page SEO. Do any of you vastly experienced (in comparison to me) SEO folk have any insight into what this statement refers to? I did not gather any references to SEO advantages in Wordpress or Joomla in the Enge and Fishkin et al book The Art of SEO, or any of the other books I’ve read, to develop my knowledge on SEO for the benefit of my clients and of course my pocket. Optimizing a Wordpress Blog For SEO
Besides the standard Yoast for SEO plugin tweaks, I'm researching best practices when setting up a wordpress blog. In this instance, the "front end" of the site would be hardcoded static pages designed for an e-commerce site, while there would also be a /blog/ attached to the site - for blog posts, fresh content, etc.

Changing from Squarespace to Wordpress - Will I Lose My Rankings?
I have a friend who has a squarespace site that is giving him lots of trouble. For one, even though it is supposed to redirect to GreenSpaceConstruct.com...Bing and Yahoo don't seem to recognize this domain. Instead, they show greenlightconstruct.squarespace.com in the serp's. Oddly, Google shows the site as GreenSpaceConstruct.com. The site is ranking well for some terms. I'm afraid that converting to wordpress will hurt his rankings in the short term. If bing and yahoo are crawling this squarespace domain, and he moves it...is there a way not to just completely lose the rankings? Thanks for any thoughts. Much appreciated! Josh

Wordpress vs. mvc framework
What's the benefits of choosing an mvc framework such as codeigniter or cakephp over wordpress? Wordpress has so many plugins, and a universally known UI for customers, it just saves a ton of time. However, a lot of the 'big guys' like SEOmoz and Distilled(?) use Cakephp and other mvc frameworks so it has me wondering what the benefits are...... anyone?
