Remove Directory In Webmaster Tools
-
Hey Moz'erz,
I'm removing some URLS from the index and want to confirm the use of the "remove directory" request.
If my structure is this: /blogs/customer-success-stories/tagged/ --- all pages that are /tagged/abc, /tagged/dce etc. will be removed correct?
First time trying a directory removal as their are 100 plus of these tagged pages.
Comments, suggestions and past experiences welcome!

Hey Keri,
Thanks for the response!
The CMS is actually Shopify. The funny thing I have come to learn and have continued to look for a workaround is that you don't have any control over your robots.txt like you do with bigcommerce. These use to be on page links in a tag cloud.
After checking the analytics on them for conversions (first interaction attribution as a landing page from search) and traffic as well as any inbound links I deemed them fit for removal.
The tag cloud in since deleted and removed however with the Shopify CMS these pages still technically "exist" because of the way content and pages get served dynamically.

Are the URLs gone? Or you just don't want them to be indexed? It's better to set things up in Wordpress (if that's your CMS) to not index tags and categories than to go and tell GWT to remove them.

Webmasters Erro - Touch Elements Too Close
I received an error from Webmasters this morning "touch elements too close" relating to the mobile version of a page. I cannot see what they are referring to: http://carhire-southafrica.co.za/car-hire-durban/ As far as I can see all the elements are perfectly positioned? Maybe I am blind and hopefully fellow MOZ guru's can assist 🙂

How to properly change your website's address in Webmaster Tools?
Hi There,We've launched a new website and as part of the update have changed our domain name - now we need to tell Google of the changes: Both sites were verified in Webmaster Tools From the old site's gear icon, we chose "Change of address" As part of the "Change of address" checklist Google presented, we added 301 redirects to redirect the old domain to the new one But now that the 301 redirects are in place, Google can no longer verify the old site And because it can no longer verify the old site, Google won't let us complete the change of address form How do we tell Google of the change of address in this instance - and has anyone else encountered this?CheersBen

What directory should a site go in (url structure)?
Hi All, The is the first actual SEO campaign i've worked on and I had a few question about where the site should live on the server and url structure. The site is in WP and we're using Yoast SEO. Anyway the site lives in a a folder called Coastal, which is a child of the WWW folder. So the permalink of the homepage is mcoastalwindows.com/coastal/. The URL is mycoastalwindows.com. The thing is I can still get to the homepage or any of the pages on the site by typing in the /coastal/. Another example is permalink mycoastalwndows.com/coastal/siding/ and url mycoastalwindows.com/siding/. The urls always display without the /coastal/, so I'm not too worried about people linking to them, but Yoast puts a canonical element to the permalink and always includes the /coastal/. Also I'm seeing that Google displays a lot of the urls with the /coastal/, which is an issue seeing as we don't link to the pages that way. My original thought was to solve this at the source and just move everything out of the coastal directory, but the developer swears that it's more secure being in another folder especially with WP. What would you all do and what is best practice? Would you move everything out of the coastal folder, 301 re-direct, do something with. htaccess, or another solution? Appreciate the input thanks!

Webmaster Tools finding phantom 404s?
We recently (three months now!) switched over a site from .co.uk to .com and all old urls are re-directing to the new site. However, Google Webmaster tools is flagging up hundreds of 404s from the old site and yet doesn't report where the links were found, i.e. in the 'Linked From' tab there is no data and the old links are not in the sitemap. SEOmoz crawls do not report any 404s. Any ideas?

Webmaster Tools 404s
We try to keep our 404s in google webmaster tools to a minimum but in recent months, the volume has simply exploded to over 500k errors. 99.95% of this is complete spam linking to pages that never existed. Have tried marking as resolved but they just end up back in the list eventually and don't like the idea of 301ing so many links when the pages never existed in the first place. We can just ignore them all but this makes it hard to identify legitimate 404s that need redirecting as there is only so much data we can export out of WT. Has anyone had experience with returning 410s? Does google eventually drop these from WT?

Having some weird crawl issues in Google Webmaster Tools
I am having a large amount of errors in the not found section that are linked to old urls that haven't been used for 4 years. Some of the ulrs being linked to are not even in the structure that we used to use for urls. Never the less Google is saying they are now 404ing and there are hundreds of them. I know the best way to attack this is to 301 them, but I was wondering why all of these errors would be popping up. I cant find anything in the google index searching for the link in "" and in webmaster tools it shows unavailable as where these are being linked to from. Any help would be awesome!
