Moving to New Domain - Ranking impact
-
I understand that when migrating to a new site, even if done perfectly (page level 301s etc) that rankings will drop in the short term and each site will be impacted differently. I picked up the following comment and was wanting to get a few experts thoughts on whether I can quote this to my client:
"In our experience, even when 301's are correctly executed, we see a short term fall back (7-30) days and then about a 90% carry through after that period for about 90 days and then back to full strength. "

Hi Conrad,
Unfortunately every migration is going to yield different results in terms of how well the redirection goes and how long you have to wait to get your rankings back if they suffer. Thomas' experience is fairly typical (and the resources he cites here are good too). It's impossible to say what will happen - a particularly large site (let's say a big e-commerce site for a high-street retailer) might suffer due to the sheer volume of URLs that need to be moved and picked up by Google; a small website may have an easier time. However, metrics like the age and authority of the moving website may well play into how successful the move is as well. As such, it's really hard to say exactly how a migration will go without seeing the sites (and even then, ranking problems can crop up that were unexpected).
Cheers,
Jane

If the hosting company changed servers or you changed hosting companies it should not matter in terms of domain switching unless you forgot to update something like the database file for all the URLs if you are using Word press or another CMS that has a MySQL database.
Obviously moving to a new domain has a lot of complications and switching the hosting can just really add to it. However, sometimes it must be done.
I have swapped hosting companies and not seeing a drop in any way shape or form many times. In fact I cannot recall a time that I have ever seen a drop from swapping just hosting.
I am not saying it is impossible but when done right it should not make a difference.
Having said that if you are a hosting company that gives you a staging server that you are supposed to incorporate into your DNS to get rid of the possibility of duplicate content that could be a huge issue. All staging server should be no follow no index robots-X
if it is a company that had an alias or staging server be certain that URL is not in a database somewhere.
however if you find you have a database and you have not updated it to reflect the new domain I would recommend a tool like this

I think this post from a few months back will help shed some light on the situation. In my experience from moving a company using a .de to .com it was a drop time of only 3 1/2 weeks to a month however we constantly told Google that we were changing domains remember to do that.
I hope this helps as well

That almost sounds like the result of a host changing servers on you. I hate it when that happens. That would be the absolute smoothest transition. I would account for a little error.
But as the man said, that's with painstaking attention to detail - all things being equal - and some off-site concerns. I would be careful about how you link clients. It seldom hurts to have a new domain with greater age and a good history. A new or younger domain will likely be a little more difficult.

Sudden drop in ranking google.co.uk ranking
Anyone else had any sudden drops in rankings this week? Is there an update going on? One of my primary keywords has dropped from 6th to 49th in the google.co.uk search results. Not in webmaster tools to flag an issue. I have downloaded the links from webmaster and it does look if some content has been scraped and then linked back to us from a large number of sites that we have never sort links from. I have upload the google disavow link tool. Only one keyword appears to be effected not all of them? Any ideas? Thanks

Domain Aliases
Hi there, I've got two sites mysite.com and mysite.org .org is indexed by google, .com doesnt seem to be. .com is used for some material that is sent out, and accounts for about 20% of incoming visotors. (80% end up on .org) Is there any positive or negative effect from this? Would I benefit from 301'ing the .com to .org?

Multiple Domains, Same IP address, redirecting to preferred domain (301) -site is still indexed under wrong domains
Due to acquisitions over time and the merging of many microsites into one major site, we currently have 20+ TLD's pointing to the same IP address as our "preferred domain:" for our consolidated website http://goo.gl/gH33w. They are all set up as 301 redirects on apache - including both the www and non www versions. When we launched this consolidated website, (April 2010) we accidentally left the settings of our site open to accept any of our domains on the same IP. This was later fixed but unfortunately Google indexed our site under multiple of these URL's (ignoring the redirects) using the same content from our main website but swapping out the domain. We added some additional redirects on apache to redirect these individual pages pages indexed under the wrong domain to the same page under our main domain http://goo.gl/gH33w. This seemed to help resolve the issue and moved hundreds of pages off the index. However, in December of 2010 we made significant changes in our external dns for our ip addresses and now since December, we see pages indexed under these redirecting domains on the rise again. If you do a search query of : site:laboratoryid.com you will see a few hundred examples of pages indexed under the wrong domain. When you click on the link, it does redirect to the same page but under the preferred domain. So the redirect is working and has been confirmed as 301. But for some reason Google continues to crawl our site and index under this incorrect domains. Why is this? Is there a setting we are missing? These domain level and page level redirects should be decreasing the pages being indexed under the wrong domain but it appears it is doing the reverse. All of these old domains currently point to our production IP address where are preferred domain is also pointing. Could this be the issue? None of the pages indexed today are from the old version of these sites. They only seem to be the new content from the new site but not under the preferred domain. Any insight would be much appreciated because we have tried many things without success to get this resolved.

Why Google did not index our domain?
Hi, We launched tmart 60 days ago and submitted to google, bing, yahoo 20 days later. But google had never indexed our website still when yahoo indexed it in one week. What we have checked or tried: 1. We got 20~50 inlinks in one month and now 81 inlinks via yahoo site explorer. 2. This domain has registered for 13 years and we purchased it from sedo last year. We

did not find any problems from domain archive pages. 3. Page similar: the homepage is 50% similar to one of our competitors when we just launched.
So we adjusted the page structure and modified the content one month later and decreased the similarity to 30% (by tools from webconfs.com) 4. Google Robots: googlebot crawled our website every day after we submitted for indexing.
We opened GWT account for it and added the xml sitemap last week. GWT said nothing
was wrong except the time of page loading. Our questions: Why google did not indexed our website? What should we do? Thanks, wu0
