Fixing temporary redirects
-
Hi all,
I recently had an issue whereby the Moz crawl was showing up thousands of instances of duplicate content. I solved (or so I thought) this issue on a Magento-based eCommerce website by enabling canonical URL tagging on product pages and category landing pages.
This reduced the instances of duplicate content dramatically (by the thousands!) however it created a new issue of thousands of temporary redirects.
All of the research I have done has suggested that I should be setting these as permanent redirects somehow, but I am not sure how to do this or how to resolve this issue.
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much.

Thanks a lot Lesley, really appreciate it!
We currently use a Creare SEO plugin for Magento which appears to solve the issue of duplicate content but then creates another issue of temporary redirects. Will try Yoast and see how things go.
Thanks again.

This is an issue with how Magento handles the canonical urls. Your best bet would be to use the Yoast canonical url module for Magento, it specifically fixes this issue. http://www.magentocommerce.com/magento-connect/Yoast/extension/906/canonical-url-s-for-magento

Do you get link equity from a redirect service?
When using a redirect service, do you get link equity from the redirect service or only from the linking website? Using opensite explorer in Moz, always shows me directory and redirect services as most important contribution for the domain authority. But I'm questioning if this is true. P.S. I'm not asking if link equity is passed from the linking website. That question has been answered many many many times. (hint: the answer is yes). H58xHAl.png pGH7e48.png

How do I fix duplicate title issues?
I have a sub domain that isn't even on our own site but it's resulting in a lot of errors in Moz for duplicate content, as shown here: http://cl.ly/1R081v0K0e2N. Would this affect our ranking or is it simply just errors within Moz? What measures could I take to make sure that Moz or Google doesn't associate our site with these errors? Would I have to noindex in the htaccess file for the sub domain?

Question on redirect and internal link count
After crawl I saw that dup content came from domain.com/index.php and domain.com. I was going to redirect one of them but im curious which way to go. The /index.php has domain auth of 19, the other 17, so not big difference. Domain.com has 2 external linking domains and index.php has 1. The big difference is in the internal link counts where index.php has 76 and the other only 4. So should I direct index.php to / or the other way around?

Rel=canonical "redirects" to double links
Our devs have set up rel=canonical on our website. First they used relative links href="/dir1/dir2/dir3" for the page http://www.mysite.com/dir1/dir2/dir3/?detail1=1?detail2=2 meaning that it will redirect to http://www.mysite.com/dir1/dir2/dir3, but no luck, the MOZ dashboard showed the tag value to be http://www.mysite.com/dir1/dir2/dir3/dir1/dir2/dir3, then we have decided to rewrite the code, and now the canonical to http://wwwmysite.com/dir1/dir2/dir3/?detail1=1?detail2=2 looks like href="http://www.mysite.com/dir1/dir2/dir3/" but the tag on MOZ looks like http://www.mysite.com/dir1/dir2/dir3http://www.mysite.com/dir1/dir2/dir3. So what is the problem? I really got a problem or MOZ does? The code on website looks exactly like href="http://www.aaa.com/en/bbb/ccc/vvv/nnn/" rel="canonical" /> for the page http://www.aaa.com/en/bbb/ccc/vvv/nnn/

301 redirect
Guys Another post by me in regard to a 301 redirect which follows on from this post here http://www.seomoz.org/q/seomoz-crawl-test To quickly summarise all i have done is change URL name and done a simple 301 to change name where respective urls form old go to the relevant new pages Ok Now 14 weeks since we implemented our 301, Originally done In PHP everything looked text book but still 80% down on rankings PR has returned to inner pages Home page has not updated After some advice from some of the members here i changed the 301 on the old domain name from PHP to Htaccess This is the code i used on the old server is below RewriteEngine on RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.newsite.co.uk/$1 [R=301,L] On the new site the canonical is fixed by PHP , i want to change this to Htaccess, capturing the canonical element along with removing the trailing slash (This is only what has been done in the past so just keeping consistant) This is the situation Old site sits on a different server from the new so each have their own individual I.P addresses I am convinced somewhere in the PHP application we are chaining so want Htaccess on old server to do the 301 and want htaccess on new server to deal with canonical elements and remove trailing slash (if that best practice) What would be the best way to do this where we wont be chaining 301's at present all looks perfect and doing what it should, but i know there is an issue and i believe it to be with the php script Thanks for taking the time to look Paul Ps where i had the issue on the old site where Crawl test said page don't exist i now have on the new site if i try and crawl the non www. version of the new site , tested on a site that has the htaccess 301 in place and get the option of crawling the old or the new page so something don't stack up so its not the tool its the PHP Fetch as Googlebot and every other tool reports the correct header responses

How can I update On Page Optimization Reports following 301 redirect?
A few weeks ago I ran the SEOMoz On Page Optimization Reports for one of my sites. At the time, the site homepage was duplicated .com/ and .com/index.html (I know!). The On Page Optimisation Reports I ran at the time obviously included both as individual pages. I've now corrected the duplicate issue with a 301 but the On Page Optimization Reports are still looking at the rankings for .com/index.html and therefore showing "not in top 50" for keywords where I'm actually ranking 1st - any idea how I can get the reports to update so they don't continue to look for .com/index.html? Thanks!
