Will adding 1000's of outbound links to just a few website impact rankings?
-
I manage a large website that hosts 1000's of business listings that comprise an area that covers 7 state counties. Currently a category page (such as lodging) hosts a group of listings which then link to it's own page. From these pages links are present directly to the business it represents. The client is proposing that we change all listings to link to the representative county website and remove the individual pages. This essentially would create 1000's of external links to 7 different websites and remove 1000's of pages from our site.
Does anyone have thoughts on how adding 1000's of links (potentially upwards of 3000) to only 7 websites (that I would deem relevant links) would affect SEO? I know if 1000's of links are added pointing to 1000's of websites the site can be considered a link farm, but I can't find any info online that speaks of a case like this. -
do you have any evidence that linking out can improve domain authority, I don't think it can.,
Matt cuts once said that it can be beneficial to link out, well of cause it can, but can it make you rank higher?
The evidence shows it can make you rank lower, not higher

Thanks for all the info. We have has a solid SEO strategy to date and currently the site ranks VERY well for all of it's identified keywords. There is a well thought out site architecture and internal linking strategy currently. I know that generally adding external links can improve authority over time if they are relevant, authoritative sites, and done in moderation. To me, the biggest concern is that we are going from linking to the actual businesses from individual pages to having more of an overall listing page that links to 7 other "directory" sites. Also, I don't know how Google will interpret a website that only links to 7 other websites (I should mention that we are already currently linking to those 7 - before this proposed change - in many places across the website). I have already mentioned to the client if we move forward, we will be implementing nofollows on the links.

Yes there is hard data, google released and patented there PageRank algorithm,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PageRank
This page is a simple explanation
http://thatsit.com.au/seo/tutorials/a-simple-explanation-of-pagerank
A no-follow will not save any PageRank,, it will only stop it reaching the linked to page.
-
Adding more internal links so the linkjuice isn't diluted over 1 link would be like playing black hat SEO... I'm sure it will be seen as spam. A nofollow is enough. Still, a directory of only 7 sites without the inner pages is useless.
-
Is there any hard data to back that up? Just curious if there has been a study done over a ton of pages, links, etc.
-
Yes it would. When you link out you lose PageRank.
http://thatsit.com.au/seo/tutorials/a-simple-explanation-of-pagerankTo minimize the lose of PR, you can add more links to your own site on the same page.
If you have a page and you have 3 internal links, and 1 external link. you are giving away 25% of your PR. but if you have 99 internal links and 1 External links you are only giving away 1%.
You are also losing content, and depending on your internal linking structure, you are more than likely going to lower the PR of your home page by removing sub-pages, again I refer to http://thatsit.com.au/seo/tutorials/a-simple-explanation-of-pagerank
Using no-follow will not help you, all link lose link juice.
There are way of using JavaScript to do this, but one day that may come back to bite you. -
Couple of questions:
The Website is a directory and yet it points to only 7 outbound Websites?
What about using nofollow for all those links?
On the content side, you are about to loose much of the site's content, you should expect a massive traffic drop. What's the point of a Directory if it only links to 7 Websites without offering any extra valuable content?

Help me to understand why this page doesn't rank
Hello everyone. I am trying to understand why most of my website category pages don't show up in the in the first 50 organic results on Google, despite my high website DA and high PA of those pages. We used to rank high a few years ago, not clear why most of those pages have almost completely disappeared. So, just to take one as an example, please, help me to understand why this page doesn't shows up in the first 50 organic search results for the keyword "cello sheet music": http://www.virtualsheetmusic.com/downloads/Indici/Cello.html I really can't explain why, unless we are under some sort of "penalization" or similar (a curse?!)... I have analyzed any possible metric, and can't find a logical explanation. Looking forward for your thoughts guys! All the best, Fab.

We possibly have internal links on our site that point to 404 pages as well as links that point to old pages. I need to tidy this up as efficiently as possible and would like some advice on the best way to go about this.

Weird rankings on my website, can't figure it out
Hey guys, One of my post popular pages for "Rust Hacks" use to be - http://www.ilikecheats.com/01/rust-cheats-hacks-aimbot/ Now when searching Google for site:ilikecheats.com rust hacks This page shows as the highest ranking - http://forum.ilikecheats.com/forums/221-Rust-Hacks-Rust-Cheats-Public-Forum What's weird is it seems the entire front end (Wordpress site) isn't ranking well anymore on page #1 of Google and the forums are ranking better currently. I did have a huge penalty from backlinks last year but cleared it. I got Yoast to do a site review and I'm cleaning up everything now. I also cleared most of the bad links via the disavow tool. Another example is when I search for "warz hacks" the forums show up in 4th place but the main website isn't showing at all back to page 10. If I search site:ilikecheats.com warz hacks the links directly to the main site doesn't show until page #2. So is this still a penalty that is carried over or is something else going on? Can't seem to figure it out, thanks in advance for looking. 😃 Any ideas what's going on and why the main pages no longer rank - http://www.ilikecheats.com

Website architecture and sitewide link
Hello, I was reading this article about website architecture http://www.seomoz.org/blog/site-architecture-for-seo and I have a question about site wide link... I don't think site wide link are good if you want your homepage to have the most " juice " can someone confirm that to me. What I mean by site wide link is let's say I have a page about golf in califorina and I create a link to another page of my website which is about golf in florida that a good practicee to do that or not ? I just used this calculator http://www.webworkshop.net/pagerank_calculator.php and and if I do site wide links the juice doesn't go to my most important page ( the homepage ) which is the one I currently want to have the most juice. However, I noticed that website like amazon do site wide link let's say you are looking at a book and they have lots of links for other books or categories and they still rank very well for the word "textbooks" so I am kind of lost and don't understand why they still rank even though to me their juice goes away by doing site wide links to other books or categories ( even though it is related ) Can someone tell me more about site wide links are they good , bad etc... and is this calculator I use right or wrong ? Thank you

What is the time of impact of a link regarding to rankings?
I own a website in a pretty semi-competitive market (220 000 searches a month for my main keyword). I've been doing some intensive linkbuilding with some good results. I got around 10 links from organisations, schools and websites of city halls, all of them, the pages being at least pagerank 3 or 4. I let some time pass inbetween, to let Google craw the pages I got the links from and most of them also start to appear in my GWT. The thing is, my rankings havn't improved anything, they are doing quite some Google dancing, staying around position 50. I got the links about 2 months ago (April). When checking other websites in my market, they all have fewer links and mostly low quality. My website itself is also pretty good, all unique content, updated pretty often, around 100 pages of content. All on-site SEO is done as it should be. Am I just being impatient? Or should i start digging deeper?

What, on average, is the 'impact time' of decent links on your rankings in a semi-competitive market?? Thanks!0 -
Do you think too many (nofollow) outbound links is a problem?
Just received my first crawl report from SEOmoz for my blog. I've rreceived a number of warnings / errors about having too many outbound links on my pages. These are simply comments from people (some pages have 300+) and the links are nofollowed. It seems like you guys must have a reason why this warning is in place, so I would love your theories...
