Wordpress vs. home grown directory
-
I just moved my blog from a wordpress hosted solution to my owner server and am really hopeful that all the SEO ready wordpress pages plus I downloaded Yoast SEO will move my site. I started with 9000 pages being moz indexed with tons of errors eyerywhere, I have almost fixed everything getting ready to do a google index. One question.
I have a directory of businesses and events for my local mountain community that is home grown with about 200 pages. see here: http://www.destinationbigbear.com/directory/bigbeardirectory.aspx which has a PA of 21 which is the same as my DA 21 (I know terrible)...
Should I migrate these 200 pages with images to wordpress to take advantage of all the nice SEO possibilities? I have staff and it would probably take about $600 bucks to do it. I would only have to put about ten 301's such as
http://www.destinationbigbear.com/directory/contentcat.aspx?ParentID=7 would be http://www.destinationbigbear.com/big-bear-restaurants/
Thank you again to all, I am hopeful I can answer some questions in the future for people... I am learning alot!

Thanks for the response, I did have someone go through it all using copyscape and at that time 180 days ago it was pretty much clean, I guess I have to go back and cleanse it...
I will start moving the content, thank you....If I had to guess I would think wordpress cms will do much better than mine, but can provide a specific as to why you feel it will do better as far as site optimization... using Yoast I know will help but other than that?

Without digging further into it, I need to ask - is that all original content? I copied the 1st sentence from the "Big Bear Marina" description and searched it at Google. That's not original at all.
So if none of the descriptions are custom written to be truly original, it's not necessarily "great" content. IF that's the case across most or all of your 200 listings, you may not have as much "opportunity" as you think.
If, however, it's mostly unique content, or you can convert it to mostly unique, high quality content, then by all means, transfer it over, and set up those 301 redirects.

Moving wordpress to it's own server
Our company wants to remove wordpress from our current windows OS server at provider 1 and move it to a new server at provider 2. Godaddy handles our DNS. I would like to have it on the same domain without masking. I would like to make a DNS entry on godaddy so that our current server and our new server can use the same URL (ie sellstuff.com). But I only want the DNS to direct traffic to our current server. The goal here is to have the new server using the same URL as the old server so nothing needs to be masked once traffic is redirected with a 301 rule in the htaccess file. But no traffic outside of the 301 rule will end up going to the new server. I would then like to edit the htaccess file on our current server to redirect to the new servers IP address when someone goes to sellstuff.com/blog. Does this make since and is it possible?

Robots.txt | any SEO advantage to having one vs not having one?
Neither of my sites has a robots.txt file. I guess I have never been bothered by any particular bot enough to exclude it. Is there any SEO advantage to having one anyways?

Nginx vs. Apache, All Things Considered
Hey Peeps, I've been struggling lately with a new static site, and I'm looking for anyone's opinion who's had to optimize a site using Nginx. I understand that Nginx is recommended for static sites, however I want to avoid being in a situation where I can't do things like write redirect rules the way I want to. Considering that it will be hosting a Static site, are there any features or functions that Nginx lacks when compared to Apache, such as ability to write rewrite rules, etc.?

WWW wordpress multisite network for Main
I have a year old site with not many links, and my original intent was non www so http://rootdomain.com However, since its a subdomain multisite, I have received notice from google webmaster tools because of poor quality on one of my subsites.maindomain.com I do have the google account setup to be "root domain only" - however, i am still being penalized it seems. So should I convert my wordpress main site to use WWW. and modify my google webmaster/analytics profile, update my site links, etc. Or what do you suggest?

No index directory pages?
All, I have a site built on WordPress with directory software (edirectory) on the backend that houses a directory of members. The Wordpress portion of the site is full of content and drives traffic through to the directory. Like most directories, the results pages are thin on content and mainly contain links to member profiles. Is it best to simply no index the search results for the directory portion of the site?

Syndication: Link back vs. Rel Canonical
For content syndication, let's say I have the choice of (1) a link back or (2) a cross domain rel canonical to the original page, which one would you choose and why? (I'm trying to pick the best option to save dev time!) I'm also curious to know what would be the difference in SERPs between the link back & the canonical solution for the original publisher and for sydication partners? (I would prefer not having the syndication partners disappeared entirely from SERPs, I just want to make sure I'm first!) A side question: What's the difference in real life between the Google source attribution tag & the cross domain rel canonical tag? Thanks! PS: Don't know if it helps but note that we can syndicate 1 article to multiple syndication partners (It would't be impossible to see 1 article syndicated to 50 partners)

I was wondering: Is there a benfit to setup your robots.txt file to do this? Will this effect how their site will get indexed? Thanks for your response! Kyle Site URL: http://www.radisphere.net/
