      When creating a page, is it ever worthwhile to ensure that there's minimal duplication in the keywords in the page title vs. the slug?

      Or is it more like the title is more like a sentence description of the page and the slug is a scannable set of keywords that describes the page, and duplication doesn't really matter.

        They don't have a specific algorithm for it, but best practice is to keep them as short as possible.  When you build your slugs ask yourself if a searcher could guess what this page is about based on the shorter slug.  If they probably couldn't, then you would probably want add as little as possible so they could guess it.

        The title should effectively communicate it, and the slug should reflect it.  Also, remember that the rules for titles is even shorter with one of Google's recent updates with larger titles in the SERPs.

          I read somewhere that Google frowns upon slugs being longer than five words.

          Do you try to follow this practice as well?

            First off, duplication doesn't matter.  Hopefully your title and slug are about the same topic.

            That being said, my goal for the title is to be catchy, and my goal for the slug is to succinctly reflect that.  A basic practice you can do is take the title, remove the stop words, and that's your title.  No need to use words like the, in, on or a in a link.  Just adds unnecessary dashes, and makes it longer.  There's always exceptions to this, but in general this is what I practice for good results.

              Home Page Title - Google Overriding my Title Tag

              Hi, We have noticed our home page title tag has now been replaced by our brand name (by Google I'm assuming). We have also noted that the page is dropping off SERPS for our main keywords, I suspect they are related but ofc I cant be sure. I know the recent Google update has impacted titles but I wasn't sure if it would apply here. Has anyone any advice on this and/or having the same issue?               What to do with sold product pages when everything you sell are unique one off items

              Hi there, This is something i have been unsure of for years. It's a little different to most ecom website  situations. What would you do with product pages when every product is a "one off" unique product and once sold will never be for sale again? Should i redirect to a category page? 404? Leave it as is marked as sold or say it is sold and show links to similar items? At the moment we have 700 products for sale but over 5000 sold products that have their own product page and my concern is as this grows it could become a lot for a WordPress woocommerce site to handle? I don't want to do anything to slow my site down or unnecessarily bloat it but i want to do the right thing by the visitor and also not do anything to hurt my rankings. These pages often rank in google and may have been there for years before the item actually sells. To throw another curve ball, there may be multiple other products (for sale or already sold) with the exact same name but are unique and different from each other. These products pages will often be 98% the same content as each other too. To explain how this could be the case, we sell artworks from many different artists, Every artwork is an original and is unique. But many artists paint the same subject matter multiple times, albeit in a slightly different way from previous times. So you end up with a unique product that has everything the same as another (same artist, same name of artwork, same size, same description, different image, different sku)  but is actually different and unique. This has left me somewhat uncertain of what is best to do. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

              Few pages without SSL

              Hi, A website is not fully secured with a SSL certificate.
              Approx 97% of the pages on the website are secured. A few pages are unfortunately not secured with a SSL certificate, because otherwise some functions on those pages do not work. It's a website where you can play online games. These games do not work with an SSL connection. Is there anything we have to consider or optimize?
              Because, for example when we click on the secure lock icon in the browser, the following notice.
              Your connection to this site is not fully secured Can this harm the Google ranking? Regards,

              Company Name in Home Page Title? If and Where?

              My guess is you want to do the  {title} | {company name} format as I would suspect Google gives slightly more weight to the words at the beginning of the title?   (This is assuming your company name isn't a generic word or you are specifically trying to rank your home page for your company name when it isn't ranking well already) But what about cases where you have like 5 or 6 keywords that are really important and used in the title gives you like 50 characters and your company name pushed it up to like 65 increasing the chance Google will use some other source to list the name of your home page in the search results? Obviously one can experiment, but wondering what the general consensus is - long keyword title, or longer title with company name?  The company name can be included in the meta description and the domain name of the url displayed also gives the indication to the company.  But maybe the algo "respects" long itles that have company name more than ones without as then it looks more like a keyword stuffing title?  So many factors to consider.  Yes - on page SEO isn't just about the title, but for this thread I'm just talking home page title.

              Redirecting homepage to internal page (2nd Tier page)

              We are planning to experiment redirecting our homepage to one of the 2nd tier page. I mean....example.com to example.com/page. We need this page to rank well, but it doesn't have much internal links or external back-links, so we opt for this redirect. Advantage with this page is, it has "keyword" we want to rank for in URL. "page" in example.com/page. Will this help or hurt us in SEO? I think we are missing keyword in our root domain, so interested to highlight this page. Thanks, Satish

              Merging Pages and SEO

              Hi, We are redesigning our website the following way: Before: Page A with Content A, Page B with Content B, Page C with Content C, etc
              e.g. one page for each Customer Returns, Overstocks, Master Case, etc
              Now: Page D with content A + B + C etc.
              e.g. one long page containing all Product Conditions, one after the other So we are merging multiples pages into one.
              What is the best way to do so, so we don't lose traffic? (or we lose the minimum possible) e.g. should we 301 Redirect A/B/C to D...?
              Is it likely that we lose significant traffic with this change? Thank you,

              Is it a problem to use a 301 redirect to a 404 error page, instead of serving directly a 404 page?

              We are building URLs dynamically with apache rewrite.
              When we detect that an URL is matching some valid patterns, we serve a script which then may detect that the combination of parameters in the URL does not exist. If this happens we produce a 301 redirect to another URL which serves a 404 error page, So my doubt is the following: Do I have to worry about not serving directly an 404, but redirecting (301) to a 404 page? Will this lead to the erroneous original URL staying longer in the google index than if I would serve directly a 404? Some context. It is a site with about 200.000 web pages and we have currently 90.000 404 errors reported in webmaster tools (even though only 600 detected last month).

              There's a website I'm working with that has a .php extension. All the pages do. What's the best practice to remove the .php extension across all pages?

              Client wishes to drop the .php extension on all their pages (they've got around 2k pages). I assured them that wasn't necessary. However, in the event that I do end up doing this what's the best practices way (and easiest way) to do this? This is also a WordPress site. Thanks.
